Itinerary
Day 1 - Bilbao
On arrival at Bilbao airport, collect your hire car and begin exploring this vibrant city. Although Vitoria is the capital of the Basque Country, Bilbao is the largest and most dynamic Basque city. Since the opening of the Guggenheim Museum in 1997, the city has undergone significant renewal, with notable architectural projects including a new tram and subway system designed by Sir Norman Foster, the Zubizuri pedestrian bridge by Santiago Calatrava, and the Alhóndiga cultural centre, transformed from a former warehouse by designer Philippe Starck. Spend the evening at your leisure before overnighting in Bilbao.
Day 2 - Logroño
After breakfast, collect your car and drive to the coastal city of San Sebastian. Take time to explore this vibrant city, strolling along the promenade at La Concha beach to the striking sculpture ‘El Peine del Viento’ by Eduardo Chillida. We suggest taking the funicular up to the top of Igueldo hill for panoramic views over the city (optional). Later, enjoy sampling the renowned Basque pintxos—small tapas-style snacks—in one of the many bars in the old town. In the afternoon, continue your journey to Pamplona, where you will stay overnight.
Day 3 - Logroño
After breakfast, explore the streets of Logroño and discover its rich architectural heritage as you wander through the charming old town. Situated on the banks of the Ebro River, this city has long been a key crossroads for important routes. Later, venture into the renowned wine region of La Rioja. Drive to the hilltop town of Laguardia and visit one of the celebrated bodegas nearby, in Elciego or Haro, some of which feature striking modern architecture. Return to Logroño for the night.
Day 4 - Logroño - Burgos
After breakfast, we leave for Burgos. Upon arrival, explore the old quarter’s winding streets and alleys, nestled beneath a striking hilltop castle. We visit the impressive Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its architecture. Later, we head to the city’s eastern outskirts to tour the Miraflores Charterhouse, a well-preserved Gothic monastery of the Carthusian order, home to a valuable collection of religious artefacts. Overnight in Burgos.
Day 5 - Santander
After breakfast, set off for Santander. This elegant city on Spain’s northern coast is framed by both sea and mountains, offering a refined atmosphere with its 19th-century architecture, charming outdoor terraces and one of the world’s most beautiful bays. Explore the northern beaches and harbours, wander through the quaint old quarter and admire the grand palaces and promenades that reflect its history as a favoured resort for aristocrats and politicians. The city’s distinctive white buildings, historic cafés and famous casino add to its timeless appeal. Overnight in Santander.
Day 6 - Bilbao
After breakfast, enjoy a final stroll around Santander before driving back to Bilbao. Take time to explore the northern side of the city, where several beaches and harbours meet a charming old quarter. Once a favoured resort for 19th-century politicians and aristocrats, Santander still boasts elegant palaces, promenades, distinctive bay-style white buildings, traditional cafés and its well-known casino. Overnight in Bilbao.
Day 7 - Bilbao
After breakfast, say goodbye to Bilbao and drive to the airport to return your car. The rental company will have provided details of the return procedure and the exact drop-off location when you collected the vehicle. From there, you will catch your departure flight home.
