Set off from Madrid and wrap up in Barcelona on a 15 day sweep through Spain and Portugal – packed with culture, coast and countryside. You’ll explore Madrid’s boulevards and tapas quarters, step into the Bernabéu, and – if you choose – wander Granada’s Alhambra. Follow the Tropical Coast, drop into Ronda, and soak up Seville’s cathedral, barrios and a gentle Guadalquivir boat ride. Day 1 - Madrid
Welcome to Madrid. On arrival at the airport, we’ll transfer you to your hotel. You’ll have free time until the tour begins – please check the information board in reception for the time and details of the welcome meeting with your guide and fellow travellers. In the evening, we include a transfer to Plaza Mayor and the nearby La Latina neighbourhood, well known for its tapas scene and lively evenings. You can choose where to dine, with plenty of options available, including Spanish, Indian, Chinese and Middle Eastern cuisines.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Madrid
This morning we set out on a guided tour of central Madrid, taking in Paseo del Prado, the Cibeles and Neptuno fountains, Puerta de Alcalá, Plaza de Colón and Plaza Mayor. We then head to Retiro Park to see its lake and the Palacio de Cristal. Admission to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, home of Real Madrid, is included. You have the afternoon at leisure to explore as you wish. In the evening we provide a return transfer to the hotel.
Day 3 - Madrid - Granada
We leave Madrid early, heading south across La Mancha for a stop in Puerto Lápice – a classic Manchego village evocative of Don Quixote. Continuing via Despeñaperros into Andalusia, we arrive in Granada for an included lunch.In the afternoon, if you choose the Alhambra option, you join a guided visit to the Alhambra and its Generalife Gardens – both from the Arab period – with a local guide.Important: Entry to the Alhambra is strictly regulated by law. Tickets are issued when your tour reservation is confirmed, and accurate personal details – full name and passport or ID number – must be provided at booking. Ticket costs are non refundable if you cancel. In the rare event the Alhambra visit cannot be operated, we will instead visit the Royal Alcázar of Seville, which offers similar historical and architectural significance.
Day 4 - Granada - Nerja - Malaga - Ronda - Seville
We leave Granada, tracing the flanks of the Sierra Nevada before following the Mediterranean along the Tropical Coast – its mild microclimate supports guavas, mangoes and avocados, and once sugar cane. We stop in Nerja, a seaside town backed by striking cliffs, then continue to Málaga, capital of the Costa del Sol. You’ll have time for lunch and a stroll through the historic centre. In the afternoon we head into the Andalusian sierras to Ronda, a celebrated white town divided by a dramatic gorge, before continuing to Seville to arrive in the late afternoon – dinner is included at the hotel.
Day 5 - Seville
In the morning, we set out on a guided tour of Seville to see the cathedral with its famous Giralda, the banks of the Guadalquivir, and the characterful neighbourhoods of Santa Cruz and Triana. After the tour, we include a relaxing boat ride on the Guadalquivir – a smooth way to take in panoramic views of the city from the water.The evening is yours – you can opt to attend a popular flamenco tablao.
Day 6 - Seville - Merida - Evora - Lisbon
We leave Seville this morning, travelling through rolling hills and open pastureland towards Extremadura. In Mérida, we include admission to the Archaeological Ensemble – its Roman theatre and amphitheatre are exceptionally well preserved and recognised as a World Heritage Site. You’ll have free time for lunch and to explore the pedestrianised historic centre. We then continue into Portugal, stopping in Évora – also a World Heritage city – known for its whitewashed streets, Renaissance palaces and cathedral. We arrive in Lisbon in the evening.
Day 7 - Lisbon
This morning we set out on a panoramic tour of Lisbon – the city of seven hills – taking in its narrow lanes, iconic tiles, Atlantic light and the atmosphere of ‘saudade’. We then continue to Belém – the historic district from which Portugal’s great navigators departed in the 15th century. The afternoon is free – you can explore at your own pace, perhaps heading up to Bairro Alto for its viewpoint. If you wish, you can join an optional excursion to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril. In the evening, we provide a return transfer to the hotel from lively Restauradores Square, a convenient meeting point with plenty of bars and cafés.
Day 8 - Lisbon - Fatima - Porto
We travel north from Lisbon to Fátima to visit this important pilgrimage site, then continue to Porto, Portugal’s second largest city. After lunch, we take a 50 minute cruise on the Douro River aboard a traditional Portuguese Rabelo boat for a fresh perspective on the city’s riverside. Afterwards, you have free time to explore the medieval Ribeira district with its narrow streets, historic merchant houses and cafés, before we head to the hotel.
Day 9 - Porto - Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary - Cambados - Santiago de Compostela
From Porto we travel through scenic landscapes to Braga, where we ride the world’s oldest water operated funicular up to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte for panoramic views. After time to explore, you may descend via its monumental staircase. We then cross into Galicia to visit the historic town of Cambados or O Grove in the Rías Baixas. Here we take a glass bottom boat along the Ría de Arousa to learn about mussel and oyster cultivation – with wine and mussel tasting on board. By lunchtime we arrive in Santiago de Compostela for a guided city tour with a local expert, exploring its medieval streets and renowned pilgrimage sites dating back to the Middle Ages.
Day 10 - Santiago de Compostela - Lugo - O Cebreiro - Leon - Oviedo
Travelling along the Way of St James, we begin in Lugo, where you’ll have time to explore the historic centre and its UNESCO listed Roman walls. We continue to O Cebreiro, a Galician stone village, then on to León, arriving around lunchtime. In León we visit the magnificent Gothic cathedral – renowned for its stained glass – and take a stroll through the historic centre. We then cross the Cantabrian Range into Asturias, reaching Oviedo by evening. A guided city tour is included with a local expert – either on arrival or the following morning – lasting about 90 minutes and covering the 9th century cathedral, the Calatrava Congressional Palace, Campoamor Theatre and Calle de la Rua. Dinner is included in a traditional Asturian cider house.
Day 11 - Oviedo - Covadonga - Santillana del Mar - Santander
We leave Oviedo for the Picos de Europa – a dramatic mountain range in northern Spain – with a visit to the Basilica of Covadonga. We then follow the coast to Santillana del Mar, one of Spain’s most beautiful towns with a remarkably preserved medieval centre, and include entrance to the nearby Altamira Cave Museum.Later we continue to Santander, capital of the region, where a panoramic tour with a local guide is included to showcase this elegant coastal city and its sweeping bay.
Day 12 - Santander - Bilbao - Foronda Service Area - La Rioja - Zaragoza
After breakfast in Santander, we travel to Bilbao for a guided tour of the Basque Country’s largest city – its economic and cultural centre. A highlight is the Guggenheim Museum, famed for its striking exterior; you’ll have free time to stroll along the riverfront or visit the museum if you wish. In the afternoon, we continue into La Rioja, renowned for its wines, and visit the Wine Culture Museum in Briones to explore the history of winemaking. We arrive in Zaragoza in the evening.
Day 13 - Zaragoza - Poblet - Barcelona
We begin with a morning panoramic tour of Zaragoza with a local guide, starting at the Cathedral–Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar. We then explore the legacy of Goya and view some of his works, continue to the Roman theatre and a Renaissance palace, and take a stroll by the Aljafería Palace.After lunch, we travel into Catalonia to visit Poblet Abbey – a striking walled monastery set amidst beautiful scenery – with entry included. We then continue to Barcelona, arriving in the evening.
Day 14 - Barcelona
In the morning, we take a panoramic tour of Barcelona, a Mediterranean city renowned for Gaudí’s modernist architecture, the lively Ramblas and the legacy of its World Expositions and Olympic Games. We end at Maremagnum, the waterfront leisure and dining complex beside Columbus Square, where you can stroll through the area. The afternoon is at leisure – we’ll arrange your return to the hotel at the end of the day.
Day 15 - Barcelona
After breakfast, we conclude our journey in Barcelona – thank you for travelling with us. The tour ends after breakfast, and you’re free to make your own onward arrangements and reflect on the memories made along the way.
