Day 1 - London - Cambridge - York - Durham
As your journey begins, we depart the bustling city of London and head north towards England's picturesque landscapes. Our first destination is the esteemed city of Cambridge. Here, we're treated to the sights of its famous colleges – architectural gems that have stood for centuries. After pausing for a leisurely lunch, we continue our adventure to the historic city of York. You'll be swept off your feet by York's magnificent cathedral, intricately preserved Roman walls, and lively shopping streets, where you'll have some free time to explore at your own pace. As our day winds down, we proceed to the charming medieval town of Durham, with its iconic cathedral majestically situated before the castle. This leg of our journey provides a rich tapestry of history, architecture, and modern vitality. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Durham - Alnwick - Edinburgh
We'll journey into Scotland today, pausing in the delightful town of Alnwick. Here, you'll discover beautifully landscaped gardens and a grand medieval castle that famously appeared in the Harry Potter films. Continuing north, we'll arrive in Edinburgh around midday. As the capital of Scotland and one of Northern Europe's most dynamic cities, Edinburgh is renowned for its monumental centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The castle presides majestically over the city’s steep streets and verdant parks. We will explore the city on a panoramic tour led by a local guide, offering insight into its rich history and vibrant culture.
Day 3 - Edinburgh - Inverness - Loch Ness - Fort Augustus - Glasgow
Today, we embark on an exciting expedition through the Scottish Highlands. Our day begins in the charming village of Pitlochry, where we'll enjoy a coffee and a leisurely stroll. As we continue our journey, we pass through Inverness, located in northern Scotland near the enigmatic Loch Ness. Here, you'll join us for a visit to Urquhart Castle, with admission included. From this historic vantage point, we take a boat ride on the deep waters of Loch Ness, steeped in folklore and mystery.Continuing our adventure, we drive by Fort Augustus, renowned for its impressive sluice system, and Fort William, a popular tourist spot nestled at the base of Ben Nevis, the UK's tallest mountain. Travelling south, we pass through highland plateaus, often dusted with snow, and hug the scenic banks of Loch Lomond. We conclude our day by arriving in Glasgow. For travellers visiting between 15th November and the end of February, the shorter days and snow on the roads mean a slight alteration to the itinerary: Depart Edinburgh in the morning and head to Pitlochry to visit a traditional whisky distillery. Then, proceed to Stirling to explore its historic centre and grand castle, a site of numerous significant events. After a lunch break, delight in photographing The Kelpies, striking horse-head sculptures inspired by Scottish mythology, before arriving in Glasgow by early evening, allowing for an evening stroll around the city centre.
Day 4 - Glasgow - Belfast - Dublin
On day four, we depart from Glasgow, heading south through the scenic landscape of southern Scotland to Cairnryan. Here, we'll board a ferry for a trip across the sea to Northern Ireland. We arrive in Belfast, Northern Ireland's capital, a city known for its impressive architecture and its journey towards peace following historical religious conflicts. After exploring Belfast, our adventure continues as we cross into the Republic of Ireland, making our way to Dublin, Ireland's vibrant capital. Our arrival is scheduled for the end of the day, leaving you free to explore the city's rich culture and history at your leisure.
Day 5 - Dublin
We'll begin our day in Dublin with a captivating panoramic tour of Ireland's peaceful capital. You'll enjoy a leisurely stroll along the picturesque banks of the River Liffey, soaking in the serene blend of history and urban vibrancy. Our walk will take us past the city's charming parks, its historic university, and the lively downtown streets. We will also admire the exterior of the renowned Trinity College, a beacon of educational excellence. In the afternoon, you're free to explore the city at your own pace. Discover Dublin's many attractions, perhaps visiting a museum or enjoying a traditional Irish pub, as the city unfolds its unique character. Note: Depending on our arrival time in Dublin and the available daylight, the tour might be conducted the previous afternoon.
Day 6 - Dublin - Caernarfon - Liverpool
Our day begins with an early morning ferry journey, taking us from Dublin across the Irish Sea to Wales. In approximately three to three and a half hours, we’ll reach the enchanting town of Caernarfon. Known for its majestic castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Caernarfon offers a scenic blend of history and stunning coastal views. You'll have time to enjoy lunch and take a leisurely stroll through its charming streets.After soaking in the atmosphere, we continue our journey to Liverpool, a vibrant city renowned for its rich cultural heritage and musical roots. Here, we’ll enjoy a brief bus tour of this World Heritage Site, exploring the city that boasts the second-largest port in the UK. For Beatles enthusiasts, there’s an opportunity to delve into the iconic band’s history at The Beatles Museum during the free time.
Day 7 - Liverpool - Chester - Lichfield - Birmingham
After breakfast, we set off for Chester, a historic town situated near the Welsh border. Renowned for its Roman amphitheatre and well-preserved medieval walls, Chester also boasts captivating architecture throughout its streets. You'll have the opportunity to explore the town at your own pace. Our journey continues to the quaint town of Lichfield, where we'll break for lunch. Lichfield's cobbled streets and historic buildings brim with charm, highlighted by its striking medieval cathedral, famous for its three spires. Afterwards, we head to Birmingham, the United Kingdom's second-largest city, notable for its significant role in the Industrial Revolution. Today, Birmingham thrives as a centre of economic and cultural activity. We recommend a leisurely walk around the town hall area and along the extensive canal network, which surpasses Venice in size and hosts an array of restaurants and entertainment venues.
Day 8 - Birmingham - Stratford - Stow-on-the-Wold - Gloucester - Bath
We'll set off for Stratford, a historic town established in the 12th century along the River Avon, renowned as the birthplace of William Shakespeare. You may choose to visit Shakespeare's birthplace for a glimpse into the life of the legendary playwright. Our journey continues through a picturesque countryside dotted with charming villages, leading us to Stow-on-the-Wold. This delightful village is known for its stone cottages and quaint square, home to art galleries and antique shops. Our path then takes us to Gloucester, where you’ll have time for lunch at the bustling docks and explore the historic centre with its magnificent cathedral, notable for featuring in some Harry Potter scenes. We conclude the day in Bath, famed for its hot springs and elegant Georgian architecture. If you wish, you can visit the Roman baths.
Day 9 - Bath - Stonehenge - Salisbury - London
On the ninth day of our journey, we'll begin in the historic city of Bath, renowned for its hot springs and captivating Georgian architecture. If you wish, there's an opportunity to visit the famed Roman baths before we set off through the scenic landscapes of southern England. Our next stop is Stonehenge, where you'll enjoy included admission to this iconic prehistoric monument. The circle of stones, shrouded in mystery, has puzzled and fascinated visitors for centuries.Continuing on, we head to Salisbury. Here, you'll have time to wander the charming medieval centre and enjoy a leisurely lunch. A visit to Salisbury Cathedral is included, famed for its stunning architectural beauty and home to the tallest spire in England. We will then make our way back to London, where we will arrive by the end of the day. This marks the culmination of our enriching journey, sure to leave you with cherished memories.
