About Can Tho
Can Tho is the largest city and the hub of the scenic Mekong Delta Region. Located on the Southern Bank of Hau Giang, a tributary of the mighty Mekong River, this busy town is a stark contrast to the tranquil backwaters of the Mekong. Despite being a hectic urban area, Can Tho’s vibrant waterfront, charming backstreets and picturesque setting in the heart of the lush Mekong Delta, ensure its appeal. Sites of interest in town include the Ong Pagoda with its colourful Chinese architecture, the floating restaurants at Ninh Kieu Wharf, the bustling Central Market and the Can Tho City Museum which provides a fascinating insight into the history, culture and customs of region. The colourful floating markets are indisputably one of the highlights of the Mekong Delta and Can Tho provides an ideal base to explore the best of these markets and the beautiful backwaters of the region. Cai Rang, the region’s largest and most popular market is just 6km from Can Tho, whilst Phong Dien, which is less crowded and arguably the best floating market in the delta is just 20km southwest of the city. Another attraction in the surrounding area is the Vuon Co stork sanctuary, which is home to thousands of storks.
