Day 1 - Sofia
Upon your arrival at Sofia Airport, you will be smoothly transferred to your hotel, where you will receive essential information about the commencement of your tour. At around 3:00 p.m., we'll set off on a fascinating exploration of Bulgaria's capital, Sofia. Discover renowned landmarks like the grand Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the elegant Russian Church, and the historical Mosque, as well as the city's expansive squares and avenues known for their distinctive Stalinist architecture. The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy at your own pace, giving you the chance to further explore this charming city or simply relax as you please. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Sofia - Bachkovo - Plovdiv
In the morning, we depart for Bachkovo Monastery, Bulgaria's second-largest monastery, founded in the eleventh century. The site offers a tranquil setting with its three historic churches. Our journey then continues to the ancient city of Plovdiv, where we will pause for an included lunch before embarking on a tour of the city. As one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in Europe, Plovdiv captivates with its rich history and blend of cultural influences. Our tour grants you access to the Roman Amphitheatre, the Old Pharmacy, and the Armenian House, each adding a layer to the fascinating tapestry of the city's past.
Day 3 - Plovdiv - Kazanlak - Shipka - Etar - Arbanasi - Veliko Tarnovo
Today, we embark on a journey through the breathtaking landscapes of the Balkan Mountains. Our first stop is Kazanlak in the enchanting Rose Valley. Here, we include a visit to the replica of the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During our time in Kazanlak, we'll also explore the local tradition of producing rose-based products. Continuing our journey, we venture into the mountains to visit the Shipka Memorial Church, honouring the Russo-Turkish War. Our next destination is Etar, a picturesque village showcasing Bulgaria's rich cultural heritage, where we will have lunch, which is included. Following this, we travel to Arbanasi, known for its fortress-like houses, and visit the Nativity Church, with admission also included. We conclude our day in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria's former capital, celebrated for its charming medieval centre nestled along a scenic canyon. Please note that occasionally the visit to Arbanasi may take place on Sunday morning.
Day 4 - Veliko Tarnovo - Basarbovo - Bucharest
Today, we journey from Veliko Tarnovo into Romania, with a stop at the striking Basarbovski Monastery. This unique monastery, carved directly into the rock, is a renowned pilgrimage destination. Crossing the border and the mighty Danube River, we'll arrive in Bucharest around 1:00 p.m. This afternoon, join us for a panoramic tour of Romania's capital, where we'll explore the historic centre and marvel at the grand Palace of Parliament. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure. Savour the local atmosphere or delve deeper into Bucharest's rich history. In the evening, we will regroup for an included dinner.
Day 5 - Bucharest
Following breakfast, our journey concludes, leaving you with cherished memories of your adventure. If you have time before departing Bucharest, feel free to explore the city further or perhaps indulge in some last-minute shopping. Safe travels!
