Day 2 - Plymouth - South Hams
We take the ferry from Barbican Quay across the River Plym (paid locally – approx. £2pp). On arrival at Mount Batten, we follow the coastal path with panoramic views over Plymouth Sound, continue through wooded cliff tops to Staddon Heights with its Victorian military defences, and enjoy sweeping views towards the Breakwater and the Great Mewstone as we near the end of the walk. Overnight Wembury Bay B&B 3H or Shearwater B&B 4H, Wembury – breakfast included.
Day 3 - South Hams
We take the ferry from Warren Point to Noss Mayo across the Yealm Estuary (paid locally – approx. £4pp), then follow the path through Passage Wood beside the river to Mouthstone Point for views of Wembury Bay and the Mewstone. We continue along the cliff tops past Stoke Beach, climb steadily to Beacon Hill and head towards Meadowsfoot Beach at Mothecombe, then wade across the Erme Estuary to reach our next hotel. There is no ferry across the Erme Estuary – plan to wade at or near low tide (90 minutes either side is recommended), or you can arrange a local taxi for approx. £35 one way. Transfers are included to and from the accommodation when staying in Modbury. Overnight Dolphin Inn 3H, Kingston or Exeter Inn 3H, Modbury – breakfast included.
Day 4 - South Hams
Today’s walk leads through Wrinkle Wood, skirting Wonwell Beach and tracing the cliff tops to the unspoilt beaches of Westcombe and Ayrmer, with fine views of Burgh Island and the South Hams coastline. We take the ferry from Cockleridge Ham to Bantham across the Avon Estuary (paid locally – approx. £4pp), then follow low cliffs to Thurlestone, pass South Milton Ley Nature Reserve and continue to Hope Cove. Overnight Hope & Anchor 3H or Cottage Hotel 4H – breakfast included.
Day 5 - South Hams
We follow the path to Bolt Tail through a small wood before emerging onto open ground with spectacular views across the coastal villages of Bigbury Bay; on a clear day you can see as far as Dodman Point on the Cornish coast. We head for Bolberry Down, continue along the cliff tops to the secluded Soar Mill Cove and, upon reaching Bolt Head, enter woodland, pass Overbeck’s Garden and descend to Salcombe’s South Sands Beach. Overnight Waverley Guesthouse 3H or Fortescue Inn 3*, Salcombe – breakfast included.
Day 6 - South Hams
We take the ferry from Salcombe to East Portlemouth across the Salcombe Estuary (paid locally – approx. £2pp). Today covers one of the more remote yet beautiful sections of the South Devon Coastal Path, with short inclines and rocky stretches leading to Portlemouth Down for expansive estuary views. The trail continues past Gara Beach along the ‘Swine Trail’ – take care near the cliff edges – rounding Prawle Point (Devon’s most southerly point) and on to Start Point with its iconic lighthouse. Transfers are included to and from the accommodation when staying in Stokenham. Overnight Cricket Inn 4*, Beesands or Church House Inn 3H, Stokenham – breakfast included.
Day 7 - South Hams
Today’s walk climbs through woods around the old Beesands Quarry, crosses Slapton Sands and the Slapton Ley Nature Reserve, and offers lovely views east and west along the coastline as we pass through charming villages towards the entrance of the Dart Estuary. We follow the coastal path to Dartmouth Castle, where you can learn about the history of the castle and the port. Overnight Townstal Farmhouse B&B 3* or The Royal Castle Hotel 4*, Dartmouth – breakfast included.
