Beaches and Ruins
Playa del Carmen and Chichen Itza combined

The beautiful white sand beaches of the Yucatan Peninsula and Chichen Itza, the world-famous Mayan temple complex with the iconic step pyramid of El Castillo are two of Mexico's biggest draw cards. On the majority of our group tours to Mexico we include the popular beach resort of Playa del Carmen and Chichen Itza so you can enjoy the best of Mexico's beaches and ancient ruins in one hit.

Besides the colourful festivals and mouthwatering cuisine, Mexico also boasts miles of gorgeous beaches, attractive colonial cities and remarkable Mayan ruins engulfed by the jungle and here's some of our favourite spots in the land that gave us tequila and mariachi:

New World Wonder

Chichen Itza

No trip to Mexico is truly complete without a trip to the world famous site of Chichen Itza. The central temple is both mystical and highly impressive and is often surrounded by clapping visitors, as the noise from the clap reverberates off the walls, creating some rather interesting sounds. Voted as one of the New World Wonders in 2007, the ruins have garnered world-wide attention with travellers from around the globe eager to marvel at the famed El Castillo pyramid.

Merida

Speckled with colourful houses and beautiful architecture imbued with rich colonial history, Merida is the cultural and commercial centre of the Yucatan state and is well worth a visit as you travel through Mexico. Plaza Grande is one of the main attractions of this thriving city and often sees free, impromptu salsa performances or jazz concerts. For a more educational visit, there are numerous museums on offer, telling guests the story of Merida.

Playa del Carmen

Just south of Cancun, Playa del Carmen is blessed with far fewer tourists than its northern cousin as well as beautiful beaches and hundreds of eateries selling delicious food from all over the world. Avenida 5 is where the magic happens in this buzzing seaside town. From shopping malls to cocktail bars to giant nightclubs, this strip has everything you need to while away the hours in the most pleasurable way.

Indigenous traditions

Oaxaca

Surrounded by lush forest, Oaxaca is a popular destination for travellers seeking to experience ‘the real Mexico’. From the indigenous villages to the delicious, traditional food sold on every street corner to the ancient ruins, this region is brimming with history, excitement and mystery. The city also provides some much needed respite from the intense Mexican heat as its altitude of 5,000ft above sea level means that the climate is pleasantly cool.

Palenque Mayan ruins - On The Go Tours
Mayan ruins

Palenque

Famed for its collection of ancient jungle ruins, Palenque definitely deserves its top ranking among Mexico’s most popular destinations. Included in the ruins is the impressive Temple of Inscriptions, which has aided numerous archaeologists and historians with their research about this period of time. Yet, while the ruins here are fascinating, perhaps the most exciting thing about this region is the knowledge that many of the ruins are yet to be excavated. Who knows what might be unearthed in the future.
