Itinerary
Day 1 - Mumbai
Arrive in Mumbai. We greet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel for check in and time to freshen up. Mumbai – often called the City of Dreams – is a bustling metropolis known for its vibrant culture, colonial architecture and lively streets. The rest of the day is at leisure to settle in and get your bearings. If you wish, you can explore nearby spots such as Juhu Beach, Marine Drive and the markets of Colaba and Bandra. Overnight at hotel.
Day 2 - Exploring Mumbai
Mumbai After breakfast, we head out for a full day of city highlights. We begin at the Gateway of India and take a ferry across the harbour to Elephanta Island to explore the UNESCO listed Elephanta Caves – closed on Mondays – with their ancient rock cut temples and sculptures dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Returning to the city, we visit Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, a UNESCO World Heritage site celebrated for its Victorian Gothic architecture and lively railway hub. We then continue through Colaba and along Marine Drive to soak up Mumbai’s atmosphere.
We end the day in the Kala Ghoda Arts District, a cultural hub of contemporary galleries, street performances and cafés that showcases the city’s creative energy. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 3 - Mumbai to Nashik
Mumbai – Nashik (170 km – around 4 hours). We leave Mumbai by road for Nashik, set in the foothills of the Western Ghats and known both as the Wine Capital of India and an important pilgrimage centre. On arrival we check in and refresh, then continue to Trimbak to visit the Trimbakeshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. We then explore the Panchvati area on the banks of the Godavari, including the Kalaram Temple and Sita Gufa.
In the afternoon we visit Sula Vineyards for a guided tour and tasting, learning about the winemaking process and sampling a selection of wines. We round off the day at another leading estate – such as York Winery or Soma Vine Village – before returning to the hotel. You can unwind for the evening. Overnight in Nashik.
Day 4 - Shirdi & Aurangabad
After breakfast we drive from Nashik via Shirdi to Aurangabad – around 170 km, about 4 hours. On arrival we check in to the hotel, and you have time to relax before we start exploring. We visit Bibi Ka Maqbara – often called the Taj of the Deccan for its close resemblance to the Taj Mahal – to appreciate its elegant design and craftsmanship. We then continue to the Aurangabad Caves, a group of 6th–7th century Buddhist caves noted for their detailed carvings and sculptures. We return to the hotel for a comfortable evening. Overnight at hotel.
Day 5 - Daulatabad Fort & Ellora Caves
After breakfast, we depart Aurangabad for a day of history and architecture. It is around 36 km to Ellora – roughly one hour each way. En route, we visit Daulatabad Fort, a formidable 12th‑century hilltop stronghold. We explore its towering walls, clever defences and hidden passages that reveal the fort’s strategic design.
We then continue to the UNESCO‑listed Ellora Caves, a remarkable complex of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain rock‑cut temples and monasteries. We take time to appreciate the intricate carvings and sculptures, including the magnificent Kailash Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
You return to your hotel in Aurangabad for a relaxed evening – overnight at the hotel.
Day 6 - Ajanta & Burhanpur
After breakfast, we check out in Aurangabad and drive to the Ajanta Caves, about 100 kilometres away. This UNESCO World Heritage site comprises 30 rock cut Buddhist caves renowned for paintings and sculptures depicting the life of the Buddha – the caves are closed on Mondays. After our visit, we continue to Burhanpur, completing a journey of about 220 kilometres in total – roughly five hours by road. On arrival we check in, and you can spend the evening at leisure, perhaps taking a gentle stroll or sampling local cuisine. Overnight at hotel.
Day 7 - Journey to Maheshwar
This morning in Burhanpur, we visit Shahi Qila, the imposing fort that once anchored the Farooqi dynasty, then take a leisurely stroll around Raja ki Chhatri to appreciate its Mughal-era detail. We then drive towards Maheshwar – approximately 175 kilometres and around 4 hours in total – stopping first at the hilltop Asirgarh Fort for wide views and an insight into its historic defences. Continuing to Omkareshwar on the Narmada, we visit the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, one of the twelve revered shrines of Lord Shiva. We end the day in Maheshwar, where we explore Maheshwar Fort and the Ahilya Bai Temple on the riverfront before checking in to your hotel to unwind. Overnight in Maheshwar.
Day 8 - Mandu & Indore
We depart Maheshwar for Indore via Mandu – approximately 125 km and around 3 hours of driving, excluding sightseeing stops. We begin at Maheshwar Fort overlooking the Narmada, exploring its courtyards, temples and palaces, then visit nearby shrines including the Ahilya Bai Temple. We continue to Mandu to see its key monuments – Jahaz Mahal, Hoshang Shah’s Tomb and Baz Bahadur’s Palace – before driving on to Indore. On arrival we check in at the hotel and you have the evening at leisure. Overnight at hotel.
Day 9 - Ujjain & Return to Indore
Indore – Ujjain – Indore (65 km/around 1 hour 20 minutes each way). We drive from Indore to Ujjain, one of India’s holiest cities, to visit the Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. We then continue to the Kal Bhairav Temple, the historic Gopal Mandir and Ram Ghat. After taking in these key sacred sites, we return to Indore in the evening. Assistance to the airport or your independently booked hotel will be provided.
