Itinerary
Day 1 - Nairobi
On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, we meet you and transfer you to Eka Hotel – or similar – for check-in. Please note that check-in is from 2.00 pm; if you arrive in the middle of the night, you must book an additional night, as waiting in the lobby is not permitted. Spend the afternoon at leisure – you may wish to make use of the hotel’s two restaurants, bar and swimming pool. This contemporary hotel on Mombasa Road in southern Nairobi is close to both the international and domestic airports as well as the city centre. Rooms are spacious, tastefully decorated and air‑conditioned. If you arrive in the morning, you can choose from optional excursions such as the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, or an Out of Africa experience visiting the Karen Blixen Museum and Giraffe Centre – these are not included. Overnight in Nairobi.
Day 2 - Nairobi - Ol Tukai
After a leisurely breakfast, we depart Nairobi with a picnic lunch and drive south east to Amboseli, enjoying game viewing en route. We arrive at the lodge by sunset. Amboseli spans a largely dry former lake bed of evaporated salts, fragile grassland and pockets of acacia woodland, with prolific birdlife around the swamps. A wide range of game is found here, all set against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, which rises some 5,000 metres above the plains. We stay at Amboseli Serena Lodge, surrounded by acacia forest and gardens. Its 96 comfortable rooms echo a Maasai manyatta design. In the late afternoon and evening, we relax on the terrace overlooking the gardens, pool and pathways – a good vantage point for watching wildebeest, antelope, elephant and other wildlife come in to graze. We round off the day with dinner at the lodge. Overnight in Amboseli.
Day 3 - Manyani
After an early breakfast we set out on a morning game drive, then you have time at leisure before we take lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon we depart for Tsavo West, crossing the Shetani lava flow – a stark volcanic field created by lava from the Chyulu Hills. We follow a winding route through scrub thorn and acacia into Tsavo West National Park – together with neighbouring Tsavo East, the largest of Kenya’s parks – keeping watch for wildlife en route, with chances to see gerenuk, as we continue to Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge. Set below Mount Kilimanjaro and sheltered by the Chyulu Hills, this classic stone built lodge overlooks its own waterhole, visited daily by elephant, buffalo and a wide variety of plains game. One of the first lodges built inside a national park, it offers a tranquil base for wildlife viewing and is well placed for visits to the park’s prime attractions. Clad in volcanic stone and set among rocky outcrops in the valley known as the place of the young rhino, from which it takes its name, the lodge features a thatched central dining area, a rock built bar and a viewing terrace overlooking the waterhole. We round off the day with dinner at the lodge. Overnight in Tsavo West.
Day 4 -
After breakfast, we head out on a morning game drive in Tsavo West and visit Mzima Springs – the viewing chamber below the waterline offers a fascinating glimpse of the park’s aquatic life. We return to the lodge for lunch, then depart for Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, arriving at Sarova Salt Lick Game Lodge at sunset for check-in. Set in the heart of the private sanctuary adjacent to Tsavo West, the lodge’s two-storey rooms are linked by elevated walkways and overlook a salt lick and small waterhole – floodlit at night and regularly visited by wildlife. Rooms are spacious with modern conveniences, and the restaurant, bar and main balconies share panoramic views. An underground hide provides exceptionally close yet safe encounters. We round off the day with dinner at the lodge. Overnight in Taita Hills.
Day 5 - Mombasa
After a final breakfast, we head out for a morning game drive in Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary – a last chance to spot wildlife. We return to the lodge for lunch, then travel to Mombasa, aiming to arrive at your north or south coast beach hotel or at Moi International Airport by around 5.30 pm. Please book onward flights from 7.30 pm onwards.
