There's also the Makgadikgadi National Park, which comprises one of the world's largest salt pans, a stark, featureless terrain that could easily pass as the surface of another planet. An amazing journey though Africa over 57 days. Great sights and experiences, On The Go Tours have put together a fantastic trip. You’ll see the best Africa has to offer and have a chance at one in a lifetime experiences. The different crew members over these legs made the trip even more memorable in particular our last leader Onary. Our cooks kept us well fed including some delicous local dishes. If you have the time do this trip. ”
We had a great tour, it was amazing to see all the animals and to camp out under the stars. I would have preferred a group introduction on day 1. We were given the introductory talk, and then advised we would be meeting up 2 days later. We truly enjoyed our time on tour, and would definitely do it again.”
My Cape, Namibia and Falls adventure couldn't have been better. I had the most incredible time and it was the perfect itinerary, covering all the highlights of the countries we visited. There was plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities with lots of game drives but there was also enough downtime for us to relax and enjoy the lodges we were staying at.
And speaking of the accommodation, I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. For me, the standout was the Guma Lagoon Camp in the Okavango Delta - it was truly magical with a rustic permanent tent right on the water's edge yet with all the essential conveniences. I could have happily spent a week here alone!
As a solo traveller, I did wonder whether a lodge safari would be less sociable than an overland camping safari but I had nothing to worry about - everyone in the group was really friendly and as lunches are prepared at picnic spots, there's plenty of opportunity to practise camaraderie and bond over sandwiches.
Our guide Joe was brilliant. He was a one-man band serving as our driver, guide and cook and did all three jobs with complete skill and care. He made sure we were well-looked after from start to finish. We were all amazed at his wildlife spotting skills, especially when he spotted a snake on the side of the road while driving! It was a pleasure chatting with him about Africa and his experience on the road and he really made the trip for all of us on the trip.
This really was the trip of a lifetime and I can't recommend it enough. ”

Home to one of the largest concentrations of game in Africa, Chobe National Park is Botswana's most popular and rewarding wildlife destination. Located in the north and just an hour's drive from Victoria Falls, the park is home to a large population of elephant that are characterised by their short tusks due to brittle ivory. As well as ample wildlife spotting opportunities, the Chobe River also offers the chance to enjoy a safari from the water's surface.
Recommended places to visit in Botswana
From arid desert landscapes to sublime inland waterways, Botswana is home to an incredible wealth of natural beauty with plenty of national parks and game reserves offering incredible safari experiences. To help plan that once-in-a-lifetime visit, here's our selection of top places in Botswana.
Botswana's very first national park is famed for its large elephant population and incredible biologically diversity with four distinct ecosystems comprising lush floodplains, dense woodland, watery marshes and extensive savannah. Dating back to the 1930s, Chobe National Park has since become Botswana's premier safari destination with San bushmen rock paintings dotted throughout.
Located in the northwestern corner of Botswana, the Okavango Delta is the world largest inland river deltas, supporting an incredible variety of wildlife from endangered rhino and cheetah to over 71 fish species and 400 species of bird. Life here is very much tied to the weather as seasonal rains affect the water levels and nothing quite beats a leisurely mokoro canoe ride on the lily-strewn canals.
Resting on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta, the Moremi Game Reserve is one of Botswana's top safari destinations with a terrain that encompasses grasslands, mophane forests and vast wetlands of lagoons and pools. With over 400 species of migratory and endangered birds, it's a fantastic destination for bird-watching and offers plentiful safari experiences with game including buffalo, giraffe, lion and leopard.
This largely desolate and arid expanse of dry savannah in the north-eastern corner of Botswana contains one of the largest salt pans in the world. Surrounded by the Kalahari, the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is actually composed of several salt pans, all that remains of the ancient Lake Makgadikgadi. The recent rise in water levels of the Boteti River entices migrating animals with the rains, including wildebeest, zebra, pelicans and breeding greater flamingos.
Encompassing an area equivalent to Denmark, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of the largest game reserves in the world. The wild grasslands are interspersed with wide empty salt pans, fossilized rivers and gently undulating sand dunes to form one of Africa's most iconic images. After the rains the reserve teams with wildlife including giraffe, cheetah and lion.
