Namibia in a Week: Towering Dunes & Open Skies
See desert dunes, coastal towns and safari scenes in Namibia in one easy plan
7-10 day Namibia itineraries are ideal for travelers who want dramatic landscapes, a wild Atlantic coastline, and classic safari time within a single, well-structured trip. Choose from a guided safari, a private journey with a local driver on key days, or a self-drive vacation, with many routes starting and finishing in Windhoek for straightforward logistics. Expect a striking mix of soaring sand dunes under clear desert skies, lively coastal stops with a different rhythm, and wildlife drives in places like Etosha National Park. Some trips also extend into Botswana, Zambia, or both, but Namibia remains the core of the experience, with travel days planned to keep the itinerary realistic. With smart routing and unhurried time at the standout sights, this duration works well for first-time visitors and returning travelers who want a concentrated highlight reel.
Best 7-10 day itineraries
Northern Namibia Highlights
Kick off in Windhoek and end at Hosea Kutako International Airport – this 7 day Namibia journey blends coast, culture and classic safari. Settle into breezy Swakopmund with time for catamaran cruises, Living Desert adventures or dune quad biking. Journey past dramatic Spitzkoppe to the Erongo Mountains – meet San Bushmen at Omandumba and try bow and arrow or beadwork. Continue to Etosha for full day game drives – expect elephants, giraffe and big cat sightings at iconic waterholes. Round things off at the Waterberg Plateau with guided walks, optional spa time and a visit to the Cheetah Conservation Fund. Scenic drives, sunsets and stargazing come as standard.

Tour Highlights
Etosha National Park: One of the largest parks in Africa. Its definitive feature is the Etosha Pan, a vast, shallow depression of approximately 5000 sq. km. For the greater part of the year, the pan is a bleak expanse of white cracked mud which shimmers with mirages on most days.
Waterberg Nature Reserve: Rising some 200m above a surrounding sea of African bush and savannah, the Waterberg Plateau with its flamboyant brick-red sandstone formations and lush green vegetation presents an island of vibrant colour.
Namib Desert: Considered possibly the oldest desert in the world, the Namib was already arid at least 80 million years ago. In the south, it extends into South Africa across the Orange River, while in the north it crosses the Kunene into Angola.
Swakopmund: Swakopmund is much loved by Namibians as a welcome respite from the inland heat. It is also popular amongst visitors for its old-world charm and relaxed atmosphere.
Southern Namibia Highlights
Set off from Windhoek on a seven day adventure that ends back in Windhoek or at the airport. You’ll explore the Kalahari’s red dunes on sunrise and sundowner game drives – expect springbok, oryx and big skies. Continue into the Namib–Naukluft to reach Sossusvlei, where you can climb towering dunes and wander baked clay pans framed by rust red ridges. Then swap desert for the Atlantic coast in Swakopmund – join a catamaran cruise in Walvis Bay, try a Living Desert experience, quad biking or fatbiking, and sample fresh seafood. Scenic drives, sunsets and relaxed evenings make for a varied, well paced journey.

Tour Highlights
Kalahari Desert: The Kalahari Desert forms a great part of the eastern side of Namibia. Due to its sandy ground, it doesn’t allow sufficient water absorption into the soil and with the extremely high evaporation in this area, it is characterised as a Desert.
Namib Desert: Considered possibly the oldest desert in the world, the Namib was already arid at least 80 million years ago. In the south, it extends into South Africa across the Orange River, while in the north it crosses the Kunene into Angola.
Sossusvlei: is a beautiful dune wonderland, with towering dunes up to 300m high surrounding a huge, dried-up pan. Extending as far as the eye can see, their rich tints vary from pale apricot to vivid reds and oranges.
Sesriem Canyon: At the foot of the gorge, which plunges down for 30m to 40m, are deep pools of water which become replenished after good rains. Sesriem derives its name from the time when early pioneers tied six lengths of rawhide thongs together to draw water from these pools.
Swakopmund: Founded in 1892 during the period of German colonial rule, it served as the territory’s main harbour for many years. The distinct German colonial character has been well preserved and today many of the old buildings serve a useful purpose.
Namibia Desert Exploration
Begin in Windhoek and finish at Hosea Kutako International Airport – a seven day adventure through Namibia’s deserts and coast. Explore the capital’s historic landmarks before drifting south into the Kalahari – think red dunes and a sundowner game drive. Continue to the Namib for a dawn visit to Sossusvlei, towering dunes and Sesriem Canyon. You’ll travel west via Solitaire to the Atlantic – expect Walvis Bay’s flamingos and two nights in Swakopmund with optional boat cruises, the Living Desert experience and quad biking, plus relaxed seaside dining. Return to Windhoek via craft markets at Okahandja – a varied, scenic journey with plenty of photo moments.

Tour Highlights

Sossusvlei: Lying within the Namib-Naukluft National Park, one of the best places to experience the serene beauty of the Namib Desert and climb one of the highest sand dunes in the world.
Sesriem Canyon: Beautiful place shaped by the Tsauchab River over millions of years. It is one of the few places in the area that holds water all year round. It is best appreciated at sunrise or sunset, where the changing shadows and soft light foregrounds the area’s breath-taking scenery.
