Itinerary

Day 1

Reykjavik

Upon arrival at the airport you will take the Flybus shuttle from Keflavík International airport to your accommodation. The remainder of the day is at leisure.
Overnight: Reykjavik

Day 2

Grabrok Volcano Crater

Reykjavik - Grabrok - Akureyri. This morning we meet our tour guide and depart from the hotel. We travel west, passing the town of Borgarnes and we climb the Grábrók volcano crater. In the afternoon visit a natural history and seal museum in a small fishing village in Northwest Iceland and stroll around the local harbour. Further north we stop at the turf church of Vídimýri which has been extensively restored to its original form and is widely considered one of the purest and most beautiful examples of traditional Icelandic architecture. We continue along scenic fjord landscapes and over several mountain passes until we reach Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland.
Overnight: Akureyri  |  Breakfast

Day 3

Lake Myvatn

Akureyri - Lake Myvatn. In the morning we explore Akureyri, a charming town of 17000 inhabitants, visit the botanical garden and enjoy the panoramic view over Eyjafjördur fjord. In the afternoon we travel to an important spot in Iceland’s history, Godafoss, the waterfalls of the Gods. We continue to Lake Mývatn which is known for its geological wonders and active bird life during summer. We stop at the bizarre lava formations at Kálfaströnd followed by a walk around the many pseudo craters and end an exciting day with a relaxing soak at Mývatn Nature Baths that contains a unique blend of minerals, silicates and geothermal micro-organisms. The warm soothing waters benefit both skin and spirit alike.
Overnight: Lake Myvatn  |  Breakfast

Day 4

Namaskard hot springs

Lake Myvatn - Namaskard - Egilsstadir. In the morning we hike in a lava labyrinth at Dimmuborgir “the dark castles”, hoping to get a glimpse of the trolls who are said to live there. After an optional lunch we visit the hot spring area of Námaskard with bubbling mud pools and steaming solfataras. We head through the uninhabited highlands and moonlike surrounding to East Iceland. With some luck we might spot an Arctic fox or see reindeer. From June to August the tour includes a detour to Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall in the northern part of Vatnajökull National Park.
Overnight: Egilsstadir  |  Breakfast

Day 5

Vatnajokull NP

Egilsstadir - Vatnajokull - Kirkjubajarklaustur. It’s a day to admire the dramatic fjord landscape and its tiny fishing villages at the end of twisty roads in the East Fjords and on route we visit an interesting stone and mineral collection. In the afternoon we see Vatnajökull – Europe’s biggest glacier that is visible all over Southeast Iceland. Past the town of Höfn, we stop at Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs, and we explore the extraordinary site and might see seals swimming in arctic waters. You can walk on the black sandy beach where large icebergs get stranded. Depending on the season optional boat trips are available. We travel along the southern part of the glacier Vatnajökull and spend time at Europe’s largest national park, which has Iceland’s highest mountains, an alpine environment, and Europe's largest glacier.
Overnight: Kirkjubajarklaustur  |  Breakfast

Day 6

Waterfalls & Volcanoes

Kirkjubajarklaustur - Vik - Reykholt. A beautiful drive with many natural wonders awaits us today as we head across the Eldhraun lava field, cross the sandy desert of the south coast, overlooked by mountainous cliffs, glaciers and waterfalls. We stroll along the black lava beach of Reynisfjara near Vík. In the small village of Skógar there is Skógafoss waterfall which is 60 meters high and is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country. Further west we stop at the Eyjafjallajökull Information Centre and learn about living next to a glacier and an active volcano. We continue to the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall which plunges over the mountain. There is an interesting trail that goes behind the fall – if you are prepared to get wet!
Overnight: Reykholt  |  Breakfast

Day 7

Horses & Golden Circle

Reykholt - Golden Circle - Reykjavik. We explore classics today as we travel the route of the Golden Circle sights. We start the day at Fridheimar, where you learn about the Icelandic horse, its special qualities and history and visit a geothermal greenhouse. Later on we see steam from the Geysir geothermal fields as we arrive. There is a variety of hot springs and bubbling pools. The original geyser is now dormant but has been replaced by Strokkur "the Churn" which erupts at 5-10 minute intervals. We continue to Gullfoss, “the golden falls“, which is a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into the Hvítá river and attracts travellers in summer and winter. We travel inland to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As we return to Reykjavík, we take you for a short city tour to show highlights of the world's northern-most capital.
Overnight: Reykjavik  |  Breakfast

Thor was extremely knowledgeable and personable.

He ensured that everyone was comfortable, happy, and achieving all that they wanted to on their tour.

I loved this trip! Being in a small group and travelling around the entire country, was both enlightening and exhilarating.

Our transport, accommodation, guide, and daily 'excursions' made this trip a dream come true.

Absolutely first class tour. The guide, itinerary, transport arrangements excellent. Katherine the guide is an absolute GEM. So knowledgeable and helpful, really helped to make the tour a wonderful experience. Thanks to Sarah Bansgrove, who made booking the holiday so simple and easy. Be prepared to budget for food which like everything in Iceland is expensive. However Iceland is a unique country. It has so much to offer and is so diverse it's unbelievable. One of the best holidays i've ever had. We will be going back.

The guide was terrific!!! He was funny, knew a lot about Icelandic history, geology, wildlife and shared with us a lot of "sociological" elements that make the Icelandic identity/psyche I think. He gave a lot of information and anecdotes throughout the tour. and was always available to discuss things we wanted to know/understand either in the group setting or on an individual basis.

As for the tour, we were awestruck by the scenery and the sites that were visited - we even got to view a bit more waterfalls than expected.

Simply a fantastic experience and a tour/guide/Booking agency we would gladly recommend to anyone. The next guided tours will surely be booked through OTG from now on1 :0)

The Iceland Circle tour was well organized and provided a comprehensive overview of the entire island. As a solo traveller, I appreciated how On the Go Tours was able to quickly match me with another solo traveller in order to reduce costs. The Trip Notes and Pre-Departure Information for Reykjavik were detailed and helpful. The Icelandair Hotels were comfortable and provided excellent breakfasts. I did not particularly like how the Akureyri hotel had very little bathroom privacy as there were no doors for the shower and only a sliding glass door for the toilet (slightly problematic if you are sharing with someone with whom you are not familiar).

Our guide, Eva, provided us with a lot of information about each site we visited. I really liked how she prepped us for each site prior to visiting it and then gave us the freedom to explore each place on our own. She provided us with a suitable amount of time at each site and gave clear timelines for our day. She also accommodated our requests and was patient with each member of the tour. I recommend that tour guides have a meet and greet or introductory session on the first day (i.e., something as simple as have each person on the tour introduce themselves with their name, home country, and reason for visiting Iceland) as it took several days to fully "break the ice" with some of our tour companions. Everyone, however, was friendly and welcoming on our tour. I had a truly memorable experience and highly recommend this tour to anyone who can afford it! I hope to take another On the Go Tour in the future!

Note: My tour rating is a 4.5 (there was no option for .5).

As an additional, unrelated suggestion, is it possible for On the Go Tours to provide tours to Australia, New Zealand, and possibly Tasmania? My next tour destination would be these countries, and I noted, sadly, that your company does not offer tours to these destinations.

Not enough stars to rate how wonderful this trip was!!

From the moment of enquiry to fare welling the group on the last day has been easy and very pleasant.

All accommodations were clean and comfortable, access to alternate restaurants, supermarkets etc were very accessible (could tell guide was trying to arrive in destinations before supermarkets closed or facilitated stops early in day to accommodate). Tour size was perfect - 25 people, not an overbearing full bus - group was easy to manage, opportunity to meet everyone and was not intrusive (ie could keep to self or mingle - some tours force you to do group bonding activities)

Guide was very knowledgeable, gave us plenty of time at attractions, had a great sense of humour.

This trip had exceeded expectations!
