Tipping is not a natural part of many Western cultures and many of us feel uncomfortable, or unsure, about when, or how much, to tip. However, in the places you will visit, tipping makes up a significant part of many people's wages so it's important that we get it right. For this reason we've developed a very simple system to take all the hassle out of tipping. With our 'tipping made easy' policy, a nominal pre-determined amount is collected from all group tour participants to cover tips en route. This then saves you the hassle of when and how much to tip bellhops, luggage handlers, local guides and other support staff through the tour. Our 'tipping made easy' doesn't include a tip to your group tour leader. Naturally, though, the amount is up to you as tipping is an entirely personal gesture.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to Kochi!

On arrival, we’ll be met at the airport and transferred to our hotel to settle in. The rest of the day is free to relax or explore—perhaps wander through Fort Kochi’s colonial streets, browse local markets, or take in the waterfront at sunset. This evening, there’s an optional outing to a traditional Kathakali performance, offering a colourful glimpse into Kerala’s cultural heritage.

Overnight:Kochi
Day 2 - Alleppey & Houseboat Stay

This morning, after breakfast, we leave the city behind and drive to Alleppey—famed as the gateway to Kerala’s enchanting backwaters. On arrival, we step aboard our traditional AC Deluxe Houseboat, where we’ll spend a truly memorable day and night drifting through a maze of canals, lagoons, and lakes fringed with coconut palms and vibrant village life.

As we cruise at a gentle pace, we’ll witness daily routines unfolding along the water’s edge—children waving from banks, fishermen casting their nets, and women washing clothes in the river. A freshly prepared lunch and dinner will be served on board, showcasing the rich, aromatic flavours of Keralan cuisine. As the sun sets, we anchor for the night in a peaceful location and fall asleep to the soothing rhythm of the water.

Overnight:Air-conditioned deluxe houseboat

Day 3 - Lake Periyar

After breakfast on the houseboat, we disembark and begin our scenic journey inland, travelling through verdant countryside and spice-scented hills to reach Periyar—one of South India’s best-known wildlife and nature reserves. Nestled in the Western Ghats, Periyar is renowned for its rich biodiversity and picturesque landscapes.

Upon arrival, we check in and have time to relax before heading out on an early evening boat ride on Lake Periyar. This peaceful cruise offers a chance to spot herds of elephants cooling off by the water’s edge, as well as deer, bison, monkeys, and a wide array of birdlife. It’s a serene and immersive way to connect with the natural beauty of the region.

Day 4 - Drive to Munnar & Tea Gardens Visit

This morning we journey through the highlands to Munnar, a former British hill station surrounded by rolling tea plantations, forested slopes, and mist-draped valleys. The drive itself is a highlight—winding through lush mountain scenery dotted with waterfalls, spice farms, and terraced fields.

On arrival in Munnar, we check into our hotel before heading out to visit one of the region’s tea estates. Here, we learn about the delicate art of tea cultivation—from planting to plucking and processing—and enjoy a tea tasting session surrounded by panoramic views. In the evening, we can explore the town’s small but lively market or simply breathe in the crisp mountain air.

Day 5 - Drive to Madurai

After breakfast, we begin our descent from the hills, travelling across the plains to the ancient city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu. This six-hour drive gives us a chance to see the changing landscape—from lush green hills to dry plains dotted with temples and rice paddies.

Madurai is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in India, a vibrant centre of Tamil culture, learning, and spirituality. Once we arrive, we check in and have the evening at leisure to explore on foot or simply relax. For those curious to sample Tamil Nadu’s famed vegetarian cuisine, this is the perfect place to indulge in crispy dosas, spicy curries, and sweet treats from a local restaurant.

Day 6 - Explore Madurai

Today we take a deep dive into the cultural and spiritual heart of Madurai. After breakfast, we visit the city’s most iconic landmark—the majestic Meenakshi Amman Temple, dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi and her consort Shiva. With its towering gopurams covered in colourful carvings of gods, goddesses, and mythical creatures, this temple complex is a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture and a hub of devotion and ritual.

There’s time to wander through its sacred halls, watch pilgrims at prayer, and admire the detailed stonework. The afternoon is free for optional visits to other local temples, the Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace, or the bustling bazaar district filled with fragrant flowers, incense, and silks.

Day 7 - Drive to Tanjore & Sightseeing

Leaving Madurai behind, we journey to Tanjore (Thanjavur), a city steeped in history, art, and devotion. On arrival, we explore one of Tamil Nadu’s most extraordinary temples—the UNESCO-listed Brihadisvara Temple, built by the Chola dynasty in the 11th century. Towering over the city, this sandstone masterpiece is famous for its enormous Shiva lingam, intricately carved shrines, and massive granite dome.

We also visit the royal palace complex, which houses a collection of ancient manuscripts, sculptures, and artefacts. There's an opportunity to visit a local bronze sculpture workshop, where artisans continue the Chola tradition of casting sacred statues using time-honoured techniques.

Today we head to the coastal town of Pondicherry, once a French colonial settlement and now a unique blend of European charm and Tamil culture. On arrival, we explore the town’s distinct quarters—the tree-lined avenues, pastel buildings, and chic cafes of the French Quarter, and the more traditional Tamil Quarter with its vibrant street life and colourful houses.

There's time for an optional visit to the Aurobindo Ashram, a peaceful spiritual retreat founded in the early 20th century. In the evening, we may wander the promenade, enjoy the sea breeze, or dine on French-inspired dishes with an Indian twist.

With the sea as a backdrop, these 7th-century structures offer a glimpse into South India’s rich past.
