Itinerary

Day 1

Amman

Saturday. Welcome to Jordan and the start of an amazing adventure. Arrive Amman, included transfer to our hotel and overnight.
Overnight: Amman

Day 2

Ancient Cities & Roman Ruins

Amman - Jerash - Umm Qais - Amman. Heading north, we visit Jerash, the Graeco-Roman city known as the ‘Pompeii of the East’. Built over 2,000 years ago, Jerash is widely regarded as the best-preserved city of the Decapolis, a confederation of 10 Roman cities dating from the 1st century! We’ll explore the site taking in the colonnaded street, amphitheatre, nymphaeum, forum and more before continuing to Umm Qais (Gadara), a dramatic black-basalt Roman city of the Decapolis with panoramic views over the Sea of Galilee and the Golan Heights.
Overnight: Amman  |  Breakfast, Dinner

Day 3

Mt Nebo & Umm ar Rasas

Amman - Madaba - Mount Nebo - Umm ar Rasas - Petra. Today we tour the citadel and Archaeological Museum of Amman before we take a walk through the bustling local souk to enjoy typical Jordanian street treats of falafel and hummus at the country’s most popular local street stand. As the pictures on the wall will prove, the unglamorous food stand was a great favourite of the late King Hussein.

Leaving Amman we’ll stop first at Mt. Nebo, the site from which Moses saw the Promised Land. Having led the Israelites for 40 years through the wilderness, Moses finally saw them from this awesome vantage point. This amazing panorama includes the Jordan River Valley, the Dead Sea, Jericho and the spires and domes of the Mt. of Olives and Bethlehem on the Judean hills just across the wide valley. Later we visit Madaba en route to Petra where we see the Church of St George, the Madaba Archaeological Park, Apostles Church and Madaba Museum.

Our next port of call is Um ar-Rasas, one of Jordan’s World Heritage sites and once an important stop on the busy caravan routes. The impressive mosaic floor of the St. Stephen Church features medallions commemorating all the early Christian pilgrimage sites of the region, and the extensive ruins also include one of the area’s earliest Stylite towers, where a Byzantine hermit lived atop the tower and preached to the pilgrimage visitors.

Our final stop of the day is Petra. Consider doing a Petra by Night excursion (payable locally) for a tantalizing candlelight stroll through Petra’s Siq….a romantic preview of things to come.
Overnight: Petra  |  Breakfast

Day 4

The Rose City of Petra

Chief among Jordan’s many archaeological riches is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rose City of Petra. The city was first settled around the 6th century BC by the Nabataean tribe from Western Arabia. Rediscovered in 1812, it remains on the list of many travellers. We access the hidden archaeological treasures of the Rose City on a walk through a narrow, deep siq, where the rocks finally give way to reveal the famous facade of Al-Khazneh (the Treasury). It's also possible to ride a horse through the Siq. Continuing our walk, we’ll then go on to explore chunks of this fantastic once-lost city which is full of tombs, temples, an impressive amphitheatre and a Roman colonnaded street. The intrepid can ascend the hundreds of rock-cut steps to Ad-Deir. Better known as the Monastery, Ad-Deir has a similar facade to that of the Treasury, but is far bigger and the views from the nearby cliff-tops are awesome. Want to learn how to cook Middle Eastern food? Consider opting for our Petra Kitchen bolt-on tonight!
Overnight: Petra  |  Breakfast

Day 5

Wadi Rum desert

Petra - Wadi Rum. There is a chance to revisit Petra this morning before our afternoon drive to Wadi Rum. A vast, silent landscape of ancient riverbeds, pastel coloured stretches of sandy desert and amazing rock formations known as jebels that rise from the desert floor awaits. Boarding 4x4 jeeps, we take an exhilarating desert safari across the sand dunes, taking in the breathtaking scenery of Wadi Rum. Tonight, we enjoy a Jordanian dinner at our camp.
Overnight: Wadi Rum  |  Breakfast, Dinner

Day 6

Crusader Castles, Wadi Mujib Canyoning & the Dead Sea

Wadi Rum - Karak – Wadi Mujib - Dead Sea. After breakfast at the campsite, we head north along the Desert Highway. Taking a drive through the busy market town of Karak under the towering shadows of the Karak Crusader Castle, descending some 1300 meters to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on the earth’s surface. More than 400 meters below sea level, the mineral-rich Dead Sea is the world’s original health and beauty spa. Drift out and bob in the waters and slap on some of the famous black Dead Sea mud to give your skin an invigorating boost.

For departures between April and October we’ll head up the King’s Highway to Wadi Mujib. We’ll embark on a moderate –paced two hour trek along the Siq Trail. Measuring 500 metres in depth and spanning 4 kilometres across, the impressive Wadi Mujib is one of Jordan’s most remarkable natural features. This dramatic canyon features sheer rocky walls and sparkling waterways that range from puddle height to depths that are perfect for swimming (chest height or deeper) depending on the rainfall. When the water level is high you should be prepared for having to climb up ladders, clamber across boulders and be happy to wade through water. The canyon is just one feature of the Mujib Biosphere Reserve, the lowest nature reserve in the world, home to a surprising diversity of wildlife and plant species. After our trek we make our way to the Dead Sea. For those not interested in taking the full hike, you can walk part of or wait by the Visitor Centre till the group returns. After our trek we make our way to the Dead Sea.
Overnight: Dead Sea  |  Breakfast

Day 7

Dead Sea Relaxation

The lowest point on the earth's surface at more than 400m below sea level, the Dead Sea is a natural phenomenon and high on most travellers' bucket lists. Lucky for us we have a whole day to spend here, whiling away the time bobbing in its mineral-rich buoyant waters and lathering up with a detoxifying mud bath. Later today there will be an optional visit to the Ma'in hot springs - a series of waterfalls and hot springs, and a sacred baptism site where Jesus Christ is thought to have been baptised (book locally).
Overnight: Dead Sea  |  Breakfast

Day 8

Dead Sea

Saturday. Dead Sea - Amman Airport. Hotel check out and included onward transfer to the airport in Amman. Departure transfers are offered on day 8 at 23:00 (evening of day 7), 05:00, 07:30, 11:00 and 14:00. If you would like a departure transfer at any other time or a transfer with post tour accommodation this can be arranged at an additional cost.

The best holiday I've ever had! Everything made interesting and I felt like everything was organised so well, it was seamless. We spent just the right amount of time at each location, and Ogla was a brilliant guide. I has a brilliant time, and would totally recommend anyone to visit Jordan and use On The Go!

Ogla was an excellent guide and was very good at remembering names. He gave us a good guide as to life in Jordan and gave us a better understanding of how complex the society was.

There was a good range of activities organised. The trip notes could be more specific on what to wear as it appeared that shorts might not be appropriate but in our case it was fine. I did the Petra kitchen which was enjoyable although rather expensive (as were the drinks at the Holiday Inn). The trip up the gorge was a little dangerous - I didn't complete it as I slipped a few times and decided it wasn't worth the risk. Overall I really enjoyed my trip and would recommend it to others.

The tour was a fantastic balance of history, activities and food/social get together s. Ogla was AMAZING he was energetic, witty he worked our group brilliantly with the right measure of professionalism and humour. He gave us copious amounts of interesting information both historical and geographical and he was great fun - wonderful tour guide can't praise highly enough. The only thing I would say is perhaps one or 2 of the minor sites St Stephens Church and perhaps Kerak castle could have been missed and maybe trip to Aquaba instead but to be honest needed 2 days in Petra perfect to do it justice and loved our hike round there, Jerash and Um Qais amazing also. Loved the trip and the guide think he should definitely win an award :)

Dear Sarah,

We wanted to write to you to say a huge Thank You for the prize trip to Jordan. On The Go Tours have been fantastic from start to finish. I cannot fault any of the processes from booking through to our return. I am so used to planning things in minute detail for our independent trips that I feared that things would not go to plan. I really should not have worried. Everything was fantastic.

The Totally Jordan Tour is amazing and I believe that this tour is a must for all who enjoy travel. This was our first experience of a group tour and we did have a little fear and trepidation at doing one for the first time aged 66 and 67. However we should not have worried. The visa process and transfer from the airport was first class and put us at ease straight away. Our tour guide, Ogla, was wonderful and was very good at making sure our group were happy and agreed on what we would do each day. We were able to make the most of the time and activities on the trip due to his excellent guidance. He also gave us the opportunity to add in things, such as a visit to Little Petra, which incidentally would be good to add to the tour in future. The program of visits is excellent and at a good pace . Ogla found very reasonable options for lunch and was excellent at explaining the history and culture of the country. Luckily we are fairly fit and we both enjoyed the trek in Wadi Majib. I only made it up 2 waterfalls but my husband made it up to then end. I had researched the trek beforehand and knew what to expect and it is not a “moderate trek” as described in the trip notes.

This was an amazing trip and We thank you again for the wonderful prize and look forward to booking another group tour in the future and to encouraging our friends and family to do so too.

Best wishes

The only slight negative is that the final hotel in the Dead Sea, which although lovely, is geared up for families at the weekend and tours end there at the weekend.. This means lots of children running around, entertainment and loud music all day that can even be heard on the beach. This was rather a culture shock after the lovely, small, quiet hotels used earlier in the tour and we would prefer a smaller quieter hotel to finish the tour and relax.

We had an excellent trip and really enjoyed ourselves. Our guide (Ogler/Ogla?) was knowledgeable and helpful and the variety and quality of the sites we visited on our tour was excellent. Petra was the undoubted highlight, but the Roman sites were excellent too, as was the canyoning and Dead sea (Our hotel for the add on in Aqaba was also excellent, as we the driver who did our transfers there and back). The only (small) negative was that we spent so little time at Kanak, especially after spending more than 30 minutes in a highway side shop/cafe beforehand. We would have stopped there for 5/10 minutes and spent the extra time in Kanak, it's worth a couple of hours, we felt! Overall, though, we felt our first On The Go Tour was excellent in terms of content and VFM.

We'll certainly look at taking another trip with you!

I absolutely love traveling with On the Go Tours. This is my third trip with On the Go and I have come to expect exceptional experiences. Totally Jordan did not disappoint. One of the things I have come to expect from On the Go is that I will incredibly well taken care of from when I step off the plane until I depart. It is such a relief to arrive at the end of a long journey in the middle of the night and be greeted and have someone take care of things like your tourist visa for you.

Petra by night was spellbinding and the trek through the ancient ruins of Petra the next day at times took my breath away! Jerash was a revelation to me and the mosaics in Madaba were phenomenal. Hiking up the canyon in Wadi Mujib was an unforgettable experience. The biggest highlight to me was the night in Wadi Rum surrounded by the endless desert. Relaxing at the Dead Sea was a perfect way to end our tour.

For me, the best part of any journey is the incredible people I meet along the way. Eid is a fantastic guide with a wealth of knowledge and an obvious passion for his country and his career. Thank you On the Go Tours for another live-changing experience!

HOTELS:

In Amman, really great. True 4 star, breakfast was really good and rooms were a bit small but manageable. In Petra, hotel location was really great, walking distance to restaurants and the main entrance of Petra. The breakfast was really great and the hotel staff were quite helpful. Room was very large, probably the best hotel of the tour. The camp in Wadi Rum was to be expected in terms of facilities.

INCLUSIONS:

The meals included were all really good! Plus all of the entrance sites and walking tours that we did was really good. The trip kitty and local payments were quite helpful, however, on the trip notes, it should be a bit more clear as to what currency will be accepted for the local payment as most passengers were a bit confused. The arrival transfers were easy and quick, as were the departure transfer. As well, the transport from area to area was well arranged and very efficient. Plus the inclusion of the visa for some passport holders was super simple and very much appreciated.

LOCAL GUIDE:

Rami was awesome. He gave us so much information all relating to the sites we visited, both cultural, historical and religious, but he has a great sense of humor and is very personable. I thought he did a great job with the group as there was quite a range in interest and age, and he did a wonderful job helping each passenger with their questions and recommendations.

Overall, the tour was really great! It was a good pace, a bit more fast-paced but considering all the different sites included, it was a good amount of time in each location. It would have been great to spend a bit more time in Petra to see Little Petra, but considering the tour was only 8 days, it was just the right amount of time to give us the taste of the country.
