Day 1 - Barcelona
Welcome to Barcelona. We arrange your transfer to the hotel – you have time to settle in. In the afternoon, we share practical information, either in person or via the information board at reception.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Barcelona - Girona
In the morning, we set out on a guided tour of the City of Counts, a Mediterranean metropolis famed for Gaudí’s modernist masterpieces, the lively Ramblas and a heritage shaped by the Universal Exposition and the Olympic Games. In the evening, we travel north into Catalonia and, before checking in, we stroll through Girona’s historic centre – its colourful riverside houses, old Jewish quarter and imposing cathedral set a memorable scene.
Day 3 - Girona - Careers of Lights - Chambery
We cross into France through Provence, stopping first in Arles, a UNESCO listed city closely linked to Van Gogh – you have time to explore and have lunch, and you may choose to visit the Roman theatre and Romanesque churches. We then include a visit to Carrières des Lumières, an extraordinary immersive art experience inside an ancient quarry. We arrive in Chambéry for the evening, the charming capital of Savoy with a medieval ambience, handsome historic centre and large castle. If tickets for Carrières des Lumières are unavailable due to closure or high demand, we visit the Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard instead.
Day 4 - Chambery - Geneva - Gruyeres - Leysin
We journey into Switzerland, reaching Geneva where – with our guide – we visit the Palais des Nations, see the English Garden with its flower clock and admire the Jet d’Eau, Europe’s tallest fountain. We continue to the walled village of Gruyères, renowned worldwide for its cheese, and include admission to the Maison Cailler chocolate factory with a tasting. The route follows scenic roads through bucolic mountain landscapes and picturesque wooden villages to lakeside Chillon Castle – admission included. We arrive in Leysin by mid afternoon, a welcoming holiday village with superb views over the Rhône Valley and Mont Blanc. Dinner is included, and depending on availability, accommodation may sometimes be in another charming Swiss Alpine town, such as Martigny.
Day 5 - Leysin - Interlaken - Lucerne - Zurich
Today brings superb mountain scenery – bring warm clothing. We ascend by cable car to Glacier 3000, where ice and snow remain all year – you can walk across the suspended bridge between two peaks, explore the Ice Cathedral or enjoy the Fun Park. We pause in Interlaken – you have time for lunch – before continuing to Lucerne, one of Switzerland’s most beautiful cities. In the evening we reach Zurich, and you have some time to explore the centre before we head to the hotel. In the event of adverse weather or other unforeseen circumstances, the Glacier 3000 cable car may be closed – if so, we offer an equally spectacular alternative to enjoy the alpine landscapes.
Day 6 - Zurich
After breakfast, our journey concludes in Zurich – we hope you depart with wonderful memories.
