Day 1 - Shanghai
Welcome to China! Upon your arrival in Shanghai, you will be transferred to your hotel. Shanghai, a bustling metropolis with over 15 million inhabitants, is home to China's largest commercial port and stands as the nation's most international city. Enjoy the rest of your day at leisure to relax and familiarise yourself with this vibrant urban landscape. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Shanghai
On our second day in Shanghai, we set out to explore the city's most renowned landmarks. We begin in Pudong, the ultra-modern financial hub situated across the Huangpu River, famed for its impressive skyscrapers, including the distinctive Pearl Tower. Afterwards, we will embark on a leisurely ferry ride across the river, providing us with splendid views that capture both the historic and modern facades of Shanghai. Our journey continues into the Old City, where we will visit the tranquil Yuyuan Garden. This Ming Dynasty garden offers a beautifully preserved glimpse into traditional Chinese landscaping, and here we'll partake in a traditional tea ceremony, a cultural practice deeply rooted in China's heritage.Our exploration proceeds to Xintiandi, a vibrant district known for its chic boutiques, cafés, and lively ambiance. We'll pause for lunch, which is included in the tour, before heading to Tianzifang in the afternoon. This area, once residential, is now a labyrinth of quaint alleys filled with craft shops and contemporary art galleries. As the day draws to a close, we'll stroll along The Bund, where the majestic colonial-era buildings stand as a testament to Shanghai's cosmopolitan history, influenced by European trade.In the evening, you'll have free time to enjoy as you wish. An optional activity you might consider is a night-time boat trip on the river, offering a spectacular view of Shanghai's illuminated skyline – a truly memorable experience.
Day 3 - Shanghai - Luoyang
Today, we embark on a high-speed train journey departing at 07:17 a.m., covering a distance of 1,000 kilometres. In just over five hours, you'll experience China’s scenic countryside, setting the stage for our arrival in Luoyang. Lunch will be provided on board.Upon arrival, we visit the remarkable Longmen Grottoes—a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its collection of over 100,000 Buddha statues and intricate carvings, making it one of China's essential archaeological sites. To fully appreciate the splendour of these stone carvings, we'll take a scenic boat ride along the nearby river, offering a different perspective of this historical marvel.Following our exploration of the grottoes, we journey to the ancient city of Luoyang. Here, you'll have the chance to wander through its historic streets, passing through imposing city walls and experiencing the lively bustle of markets and local shops, illuminated by the vibrant evening lights.
Day 4 - Luoyang - Longmen - Sanmexia - Xian
In the early morning, we will explore the outskirts of Luoyang by visiting the esteemed White Horse Buddhist Monastery, renowned as a significant centre for Buddhist scholarship, welcoming experts and devotees globally. Our journey proceeds to Sanmenxia, a city with a rich historical tapestry, where we will marvel at the impressive Yellow River and visit the Baolun Temple, noted for its towering pagoda. Following this, we will delve into the Guo Museum, heralded as one of China's finest, showcasing ancient funeral carriages from the former State of Guo, offering intriguing insights into the region's history. Lunch is included. As we journey east, we will pass by Mount Hua, revered for its striking peaks and spiritual importance. By late afternoon, we will reach Xian, concluding our day's journey.
Day 5 - Xian
Upon arriving in Xian, once the starting point of the famed Silk Road, we will embark on a fascinating exploration of the city's most prominent attractions. Our day begins with a visit to the awe-inspiring Terracotta Army. Unearthed after centuries hidden underground, thousands of life-sized clay soldiers vigilantly guard the tomb of China’s first emperor, offering an extraordinary glimpse into ancient Chinese history.Following this, we return to the city to see the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, a graceful Buddhist structure that has endured for more than a millennium. Next, we will delve into Xian’s historic walled centre, where we will wander through the bustling Muslim Quarter. Here, you'll have the opportunity to appreciate the intricate blend of cultures and religions at the Great Mosque, renowned for its unique architectural style.Our itinerary also includes a visit to the Drum Tower, where we will be treated to a short performance of traditional Chinese music, beautifully played on age-old instruments. Afterwards, you will have free time to explore Xian’s vibrant streets and discover its hidden gems at your own pace.
Day 6 - Xian - Chengdu
Today, we'll depart Xian via a state-of-the-art high-speed train, covering the 700-kilometre journey to Chengdu in just over three hours. Upon arrival, we'll visit the renowned Panda Research and Breeding Centre, home to 120 giant pandas and 76 red pandas, where you'll have the opportunity to see these incredible animals up close. Lunch is included. In the afternoon, we'll unwind with a leisurely walk through People's Park, a charming spot with a small lake, where locals often practise Taichi. The park is also known for its traditional tea houses, offering us a glimpse into local customs and culture.
Day 7 - Chengdu
Today's adventure takes us on a fascinating exploration of Sichuan Province, renowned for its scenic landscapes and cultural heritage. Our day begins in Dujiangyan, where we visit the historic irrigation system—a marvel of engineering that has efficiently managed local water for over 2,000 years and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Next, we travel to Qingcheng Shan, the ‘Mountain of the Green City’, a sacred Taoist site. Here, we wander through lush forest paths leading us to caves, pavilions, and ancient wooden temples that echo centuries of spiritual devotion. After a lunch infused with local flavours, we proceed to the ancient city of Jiezi. Stroll through its storied alleys, which have witnessed over a millennium of history, providing a glimpse into traditional life. We then return to Chengdu, reflecting on a day enriched with cultural insights and natural beauty.
Day 8 - Chengdu - Lhasa
We will set off for the airport to catch our included flight to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. After landing at Gonggar Airport, our guide will greet us and we'll begin a picturesque bus journey to Lhasa – a drive of approximately one and a half hours. Upon arrival, we will check into our hotel, where you will have the evening free. This is an ideal time to acclimatise to the higher altitude of 3,700 metres. Enjoy a leisurely evening exploring the local bazaars at your own pace or simply relax and absorb the unique atmosphere of your surroundings.
Day 9 - Lhasa
We begin our day in Lhasa with a guided visit to the spectacular Potala Palace, an iconic symbol of Tibetan culture. This impressive 13-storey edifice once served as the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and emerges as a testament to the nation's architectural prowess, dating back to the 7th century. With its magnificent design visible from various vantage points across the city, the palace stands as both a historical and spiritual emblem. After an included lunch, we’ll explore Sera Monastery, founded in 1419 by Sakya Yeshe, a disciple of Tsongkhapa. Here, we’ll have the unique opportunity to observe the traditional "Debate on Buddhist Scriptures", a lively and insightful practice characteristic of Sera. We conclude our day with a return to our hotel for an overnight stay in Lhasa.
Day 10 - Lhasa
Today, we dive further into the heart of Lhasa with a guided visit to the revered Jokhang Temple. Known as the "House of Buddha" in Tibetan, this temple is said to house a statue crafted by Buddha Sakyamuni himself. It is a vibrant hub of spiritual and secular life, drawing people from all Tibetan tribes. As we explore, you will witness the convergence of cultures around the temple. Surrounding this sacred site is Barkhor Market, an essential religious route and bustling market offering a glimpse into local life and an opportunity for unique shopping. Included is lunch, after which we will visit Norbulingka, the former summer residence of the Dalai Lamas. This visit will provide insight into the history and lifestyle of Tibet's spiritual leaders. Following our exploration, we'll return for an overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 11 - Lhasa - Beijing
After breakfast, we will head to the airport for our included flight to Beijing, the capital of the People's Republic of China. Upon arrival, we'll arrange a transfer to the hotel. Later in the afternoon, we'll begin our exploration of this remarkable city with a visit to Wangfujing Street. This bustling pedestrian and commercial avenue is lined with shops and restaurants, offering a vibrant introduction to Beijing. Dinner will be included. After enjoying the lively atmosphere, we'll return to the hotel for the night.
Day 12 - Beijing
On this fascinating day in Beijing, we will delve into the city’s remarkable history and vibrant culture. Our adventure begins with a visit to the renowned Forbidden City, China’s grandest architectural complex, where 24 emperors ruled for nearly half a millennium. Next, we explore Jingshan Park, offering spectacular panoramic views from Coal Hill—perfect for appreciating the scale and beauty of the Forbidden City, should the weather be favourable.We will then make our way to the vast expanse of Tiananmen Square, one of the largest public squares in the world, where we can admire the magnificent Great National Theatre—also referred to as the Beijing Opera House. Lunch will be provided before we continue to the Summer Palace, an exquisite imperial retreat renowned for its stunning gardens and tranquil lakes, constructed during the Qing Dynasty.Our journey through Beijing's rich tapestry concludes with a tricycle ride through the historic Hutong neighbourhoods, where the city’s traditional life unfolds around us. We will discover the charm of Beijing’s cultural heritage as we visit traditional shops and explore a Siheyuan, or courtyard house, emblematic of the city’s architectural elegance.Our day will end with our return to the hotel for a restful overnight stay. Please note that due to heritage protection measures and visitor safety regulations, access to the Forbidden City may be restricted. Should this occur, we will instead visit the significant Confucius Temple and the Lama Temple, both vital to China’s historical and cultural narrative.
Day 13 - Beijing
Today, we embark on a visit to one of the world's most iconic landmarks—the Great Wall of China, specifically the Mutianyu section. This remarkable architectural feat, steeped in over 2,000 years of history, winds its way through stunning mountain landscapes. We’ll take a cable car to and from one of its most picturesque segments, offering breathtaking views of this legendary structure.On our return to Beijing, we’ll explore the vibrant 798 Art District. Once a military factory, this area has been transformed into a bustling centre for contemporary art, brimming with galleries, studios, and creative spaces.Our next stop is the Temple of Heaven, China's largest ancient sacred complex, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This incredible structure was historically where emperors prayed for bountiful harvests.To wrap up this delightful day, we'll relax with a foot massage followed by a Tai Chi class, offering a serene introduction to the balance and harmony inherent in traditional Chinese culture. As our day in Beijing concludes, we’ll savour a dinner of lacquered duck, an iconic local delicacy sure to linger in your memory.
