Day 1 - Shanghai
Welcome to China! Upon arrival in Shanghai, you'll be transferred to your hotel, marking the start of your adventure in this vibrant metropolis. Shanghai is a bustling cosmopolitan hub, home to over 15 million residents. It serves as China's largest commercial port and is renowned as the country's most international city. Dive into the energetic atmosphere and prepare to explore the fascinating blend of modernity and tradition that defines Shanghai. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Shanghai
On our second day in Shanghai, we delve into the city's most iconic sights. Our journey begins in Pudong, the bustling financial hub located across the Huangpu River, where the futuristic skyline is dominated by towering skyscrapers, including the renowned Pearl Tower. We then embark on a scenic ferry ride across the Shanghai River, offering us captivating views of the city's harmonious blend of historic and modern architecture. After disembarking, we wander through the Old City to the tranquil Yuyuan Garden, a beautifully preserved oasis built during the Ming Dynasty. Here, we immerse ourselves in the cultural richness of China with a traditional tea ceremony—an age-old practice deeply rooted in the nation’s heritage. Our exploration continues in Xintiandi, a vibrant district celebrated for its charming boutiques, cosy cafés, and lively atmosphere, where we'll have a delightful lunch. In the afternoon, we venture to Tianzifang, a former residential area transformed into a maze of narrow lanes adorned with quaint craft shops and contemporary art galleries.As the day draws to a close, we take a leisurely stroll along The Bund, where the majestic colonial-era buildings stand as a testament to Shanghai's historical ties to European trade. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure. You might choose to embark on an enchanting night-time boat trip to witness Shanghai's dazzling skyline illuminated against the night—an experience you will find truly unforgettable.
Day 3 - Shanghai - Luoyang
On Day 3, we embark on an early morning transfer to the train station to board a high-speed train, departing at 07:17 a.m. In just over five hours, we journey 1,000 kilometres through stunning landscapes, traversing picturesque countryside before reaching Luoyang. Lunch is included.Upon arrival, we delve into the remarkable Longmen Buddhist Caves, a striking complex that stretches over a kilometre along rocky river cliffs. Here, over 100,000 Buddha statues and carvings are etched into stone, offering one of China's most extraordinary archaeological experiences. To fully capture the splendour of this site, we enjoy a scenic boat ride along the river.Later, we move on to the ancient city of Luoyang. Passing through its impressive walls, we immerse ourselves in the bustling ambiance of its illuminated streets, where traditional charm meets vibrant local life.
Day 4 - Luoyang - Longmen - Sanmexia - Xian
In the early morning on the outskirts of Luoyang, we explore the White Horse Buddhist Monastery, a significant centre for Buddhist learning that draws scholars and practitioners from around the globe. From here, we continue to Sanmenxia, a city enriched by its historical legacy. Here, you'll be captivated by the impressive Yellow River and have the opportunity to visit the Baolun Temple, distinguished by its commanding tall pagoda. We'll also step into the Guo Museum, acclaimed as one of China's foremost, where the ancient funeral carriages from the former State of Guo provide a fascinating insight into the area's storied past. Lunch will be provided. Our journey eastward will take us by the sacred Mount Hua, revered as one of China’s most hallowed mountains, renowned for its steep peaks and spiritual significance. We will arrive in Xian by late afternoon, marking the end of our day's experiences.
Day 5 - Xian
On our fifth day, we'll immerse ourselves in the rich history of Xi’an, a city famed as the starting point of the ancient Silk Road. Our morning begins with a visit to the awe-inspiring Terracotta Army, a remarkable archaeological discovery where thousands of life-sized clay soldiers have stood watch over the tomb of China’s first emperor for centuries. After this captivating encounter, we'll return to the city to see the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, an enduring Buddhist landmark that has graced the skyline for over a millennium.The exploration continues as we wander through the historic walled centre of Xi’an, making our way to the lively Muslim Quarter. Here, amidst a vibrant blend of cultures, we'll visit the Great Mosque, a unique site that embodies the rich cultural tapestry of China’s history. As part of our tour, we will also have entry to the Drum Tower, where a short performance of traditional Chinese music on ancient instruments awaits.Following our scheduled activities, you will have free time to further explore the city at your own leisure, enabling you to soak in the local atmosphere or discover additional sights at your own pace.
Day 6 - Xian - Chengdu
Today, we journey from Xian to Chengdu aboard a modern high-speed train, spanning 700 kilometres in just over three hours. Upon arrival, our first stop is the Panda Bear Research and Breeding Centre, home to 120 giant pandas and 76 red pandas. It's a unique opportunity to observe these incredible creatures in a dedicated conservation setting. Lunch is included. In the afternoon, we explore the tranquil People's Park, where you can soak in the local atmosphere—watch residents practising Tai Chi, wander around the small lake, and perhaps enjoy refreshments in one of the traditional tea houses.
Day 7 - Chengdu
Today, we're embarking on a full-day tour of the picturesque Sichuan Province, renowned for its serene landscapes and traditional villages. Our first stop is Dujiangyan, home to an ancient irrigation system that has been functioning for over 2,000 years and holds the distinction of being a UNESCO World Heritage site. We'll then head to Qingchengshan, a renowned Taoist holy mountain. As we wander through its forested paths, we’ll discover hidden caves, scenic pavilions, and wooden temples that have stood the test of time. A delightful lunch will be provided as part of our experience. Our day's exploration concludes in Jiezi, an ancient city where the historic alleys transport us back over a thousand years. Following an enriching day, we'll return to Chengdu.
Day 8 - Chengdu
After breakfast, our journey concludes, but the memories of this incredible adventure will last a lifetime. Reflect on the diverse cultures and stunning landscapes you've experienced during your travels. Safe travels onward, and may your memories of this trip bring joy for years to come.
