Itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to Medellin, Colombia!

Welcome to Medellin! Get together with the group and your tour leader in the hostel this morning (we recommend arriving in Medellin the day before your tour starts) for a trip briefing.

We will then embark on a guided walk through Comuna 13, a lively neighbourhood, famous for its street art and resilient history, that has evolved into a hub of urban renewal, with striking murals and scenic views. After, you will have the chance to enjoy lunch as a group at the Mercado del Río, a local food market offering a variety of Colombian cuisines. We will then learn Spanish terms from our guide, which will help you throughout your tour.

We’ll explore Medellín’s iconic landmarks, including Plaza Botero, Palacio de la Cultura Rafael Uribe Uribe, and the Catedral Basílica Metropolitana. If you are looking for something more adrenaline pumping, you can opt to join a paragliding flight over the city offering a new perspective over the city.

In the evening, you will have the opportunity to opt to go watch a local football match at Estadio Atanasio Giradot (depending on the fixtures). If there are no available matches to watch, you can opt to try Tejo, a local game that involves throwing clay at gunpowder to create a small explosion. Alternatively, you can enjoy some drinks and salsa at El Poblado - one of Medellín’s safe party streets.

Day 2 - Guatape Exploration & Tango lesson

Start your day with a cup of locally brewed Colombian coffee before we head to the vibrant town of Guatapé, known for its decorative murals, lively streets, and energetic atmosphere.

Our first stop takes us to the top of the Penol-Guatape Reservoir, where a climb of 740 steps leads to stunning panoramic views of the lakes and surrounding landscapes. After, we will explore the town before jumping into kayaks to explore the scenic reservoir, surrounded by mountains and vibrant houses.

In the evening, we will take part in a tango dance class, where we will experience the energetic beats and passionate moves that define this cultural dance.

Day 3 - Coffee Experience in Salento

Medellin - Salento. This morning, we’ll rise early and journey to Salento by minivan, a picturesque town nestled in the Coffee Triangle, renowned for its vibrant colonial architecture, thriving coffee plantations, and breathtaking views of the towering wax palms in Cocora Valley. (Approx. 7 hours) Our tour leader will meet us in Salento.

Next, we will visit a Coffee farm in Finca El Ocaso, here you will get a full hands on experience, picking coffee beans, using the coffee making process, and tasting your freshly made coffee.

Later, you will have the rest of the day to experience the culture of this quaint town at your leisure.

Day 4 - Cali Exploration

Salento - Cali. Today, we will make our way by bus to our next city known for its energetic salsa music and being encircled by mountains. In the late morning, our tour leader will meet us at the hostel, you will then have some free time to relax by the pool, explore, or enjoy some food.

In the late afternoon, we’ll explore Cali’s vibrant atmosphere, viewing sights like Plaza de Caycedo with its towering palm trees to the iconic Catedral Metropolitana. Then, we’ll delve into the city’s rebellious spirit, exploring salsa’s cultural roots and its artistic expression through music and murals. The evening is yours to enjoy, you could even spend the night dancing at one of the city's best clubs!

Day 5 - Cali to Bogota

Cali - Bogota. This morning you will have some time at leisure to relax by the pool or soak in the sunlight. In the afternoon we will make our way to the airport in Cali for our onward flight to Bogota, located in the mountains of the Andes. Once we have arrived you will have the rest of the day at your leisure.

Day 6 - Bogota Cycling Tour & Funicular to Monserrate

We’ll start our cycling tour through Bogotá’s lively districts, pedalling through historic areas like La Candelaria, Plaza Bolívar, the Cathedral, and the Presidential Palace. Along the way, we’ll visit a traditional fruit market to taste exotic Colombian fruits such as lulo, uchuva, passion fruit, and more while passing through charming local neighborhoods.

Next, we’ll cycle through a modern district, exploring the vibrant urban landscape and even some national parks. Afterward, we’ll dive into Bogotá’s artistic side with a graffiti tour, where we'll discover Colombia’s history, culture, and politics through street art. You'll have the chance to visit galleries, admire incredible artwork, and even try your hand at spray painting!

We will then take a funicular to the top of Monserrate Mountain, offering views of Bogota from 3000 metres above sea level. You will have some time to explore the area, and the church before heading back down. You will then have the rest of the day at leisure, you can even enjoy clubbing at Threatron, the biggest Latin American Club.

Day 7 - Bogota to Cusco, Peru

Bogota (Colombia) - Cusco (Peru). This morning, we will make our way to the airport for our direct flight to Cusco, once the heart of the Incan Empire and the gateway to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.

On arrival in the afternoon, we’ll take a guided walk-through of Cusco’s historic centre, visiting Plaza de Armas, Cusco Cathedral, and San Pedro Market. After, you will have the opportunity to enjoy dinner with your fellow travellers to try some traditional dishes.

Day 8 - Start of the 4-day Andean Hike

Today, we will start our 4-day hike through the Andes Mountain range heading for Machu Picchu. During this hike, all meals will be included as there are no shops, we will be required to carry a day bag for the hike with the rest of our larger luggage being transported while we hike.

We’ll take a leisurely hike today, allowing time to acclimatize while enjoying breathtaking Andean landscapes. After a day of hiking, we’ll set up camp, enjoy a meal prepared by our trekking team, and unwind beneath the star-studded Andean sky, with views of the Milky Way.

Please note: We always aim to secure Inca Trail permits, but these book out well in advance and the Salkantay Trek is a more than worthy alternative. If permits sell out, we’ll secure the Salkantay Trek—both lead to Machu Picchu, though Salkantay is more adventurous with one less night of camping. Permits are non-refundable and require a valid passport. Entry times and circuits may vary, but all offer an unforgettable experience. Local guides lead the trek, though you may explore Machu Picchu independently with a full briefing. Please see the Trip notes for more information about the Inca Trail trek and alternatives, should permits not be available.

Non-trekking option: If you prefer not to hike, you'll spend two extra nights in Cusco before a 2-day Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour—no camping required! Included meals for the non-trekking option is 1 dinner on day 10 and 1 breakfast on day 11. The stay in Cusco will be unguided with optional activities which can be you can opt to join are as follows walking tours, cooking classes, or chocolate-making workshops, with our local team available for support.

Day 9 - Day 2 of the Andean Hike

Today’s trek will be more challenging, with plenty of uphill climbs, culminating in a final push to reach our next campsite.

Our second full day of hiking begins as we cross mountain passes, taking in sweeping views of the rugged Andean peaks and deep valleys below. Along the way, we’ll explore small, hidden archaeological sites that offer a glimpse into the ancient Inca civilization. The natural landscapes will amaze you, with lush forests, rocky cliffs, and vibrant flora. Keep an eye out for hummingbirds flitting through the air and giant condors soaring above, as this region is known for its colourful birdlife.

Day 10 - Day 3 of the Andean Hike

Today, we begin with a steady climb, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. As we progress, we’ll visit Phuyupatamarca, the third-highest point on the trail, where you’ll get sweeping views of the Sacred Valley below. Then, we’ll descend toward our third campsite, moving from the cool, crisp air of the high Andes to the warmer, more humid atmosphere of the Amazon jungle.

Along the way, we’ll explore the stunning Intipata site, with its terraced fields offering dramatic views of the landscape. After arriving at camp in the afternoon, you’ll have time to relax and reflect on the past few days of trekking.

Day 11 - Final day of the Andean Hike

This morning, we will have an early start, as we make our way up to one of the seven wonders of the world, Machu Picchu. Perched atop an Andean peak, this 15th-century Incan citadel served as a royal estate and ceremonial centre. Abandoned during the Spanish conquest, it was forgotten for over 400 years until Hiram Bingham's rediscovery in the early 20th century, offering stunning views over Machu Picchu.

Afterward, we’ll begin our return journey to Cusco, leaving you with the evening to unwind and explore at your leisure. You may choose to indulge in a relaxing massage after your four-day trek.

Day 12 - Cusco at Leisure & Sacsayhuaman Visit

Today, you will have the morning at leisure to experience this picturesque city. You can take a stroll through the enchanting streets, visit a cafe, enjoy a traditional Peruvian breakfast, or visit the charming Plaza de Armas or San Pedro Market to experience local life.

In the afternoon we will meet with the group to visit the Sacsayhuamán, an Incan fortress, situated on a hill overlooking Cusco, known for its impressive stone walls, advanced masonry, and spectacular views of the surrounding valley.

You’ll have the evening free to explore Cusco’s nightlife, from a bar crawl to cultural shows, or unwind at a café or spa for a relaxing end to your day.

Day 13 - Cusco to Puno & Rainbow Mountain hike

Cusco - Puno. This morning, we embark on our journey to our final destination, Puno, travelling along the Route of the Sun (Ruta del Sol). This scenic route links Cusco and Puno, offering stunning Andean landscapes, historic ruins, and rich cultural landmarks.

Along our journey, we’ll have the chance to explore one of Peru’s most spectacular natural wonders—Rainbow Mountain! A moderate hike of about an hour and a half will take us to the summit, where we’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of its vibrant, multi-coloured terrain, shaped by centuries of geological activity. Make sure to have your cameras ready!

After, we will make our descent and continue our journey to Puno. Once we have arrived, you will have the rest of the day to explore the town of Puno found at the shores of Lake Titicaca.

Day 14 - Lake Titicaca Boat Tour

Today we enjoy an included boat ride on UNESCO-listed Lake Titicaca, one of Peru's most famous natural wonders. Soak up the Andean scenery and visit the floating reed islands of the indigenous Uros people. They took to the water originally to protect against attacks from the Incas, and the tradition has well and truly stuck. Back in Puno, your evening is at leisure.

Day 15 - Puno

This morning, marks the end of the tour. Depending on your departure flight time you may have some time for some last-minute shopping, or exploration before you make your way to the airport for your onward flight. Safe travels!
