Days 2-4 - Saariselka Free Time & Northern Lights
Your itinerary for the next three days is fluid. You will enjoy an included Northern Lights tour by bus with a local guide. As well as hopefully being able to spot the Aurora Borealis, your guide will be able to share with you all about life in this part of northern Finland.
The rest of your time in Saariselka is at leisure. You can head out and explore independently or can prebook some of the available optional activities at an additional cost:
Introduction to Snowmobiling
Ideal for first-timers, this one-hour session (15:00–16:00 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) teaches you how to handle a snowmobile with ease. A guide will introduce you to specially adapted vehicles designed for safety and comfort, helping you gain confidence on the snow. By the end, you'll be ready to take on longer and more adventurous safaris.
Scenic Snowmobile Safari
Running from 09:30 to 12:00 on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, this safari takes you through the stunning landscapes of Fell Lapland at a relaxed pace. Ride along snow-covered trails, pausing to admire panoramic views and capture the beauty of the Arctic wilderness. There are plenty of photo stops along the way, and a break to enjoy warm berry juice before heading back.
Rider’s Dream Snowmobile Safari
For those who love the thrill of riding solo, this three-hour adventure (11:00–14:00 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) offers the ultimate snowmobiling experience. Navigate a mix of scenic trails and open landscapes, enjoying the freedom of handling your own snowmobile without a passenger. Along the way, take in breathtaking views of the Lappish wilderness and warm up with a cup of berry juice.
White Silence on Snowshoes
Step into the quiet beauty of the Arctic on this two-hour snowshoeing adventure (10:00–12:00 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). Follow marked trails and venture into deep snow as you explore the pristine Lappish forest. Keep an eye out for animal tracks left by rabbits, foxes, and willow grouse, and take a break along the way to enjoy warm berry juice in the heart of the winter wilderness.
Ice Fishing Trip by Bus
Departing at 08:30 on Monday and Saturday, this five-hour trip takes you north of Saariselkä to a remote frozen lake, deep in the breathtaking landscapes of Europe's last wilderness. Try your hand at ice fishing, where you might catch trout, perch, grayling, or pike. Whether you release your catch or cook it over an open fire, you’ll enjoy a peaceful moment by the crackling flames, with a delicious campfire lunch prepared by your guide.
Reindeer Safari
Experience Lapland’s most traditional mode of transport on this two-hour reindeer safari (10:00–12:00 on Monday and Sunday). Glide through the snowy wilderness in a sleigh pulled by reindeer, just as the Sámi people have for centuries. The only sound is the gentle jingle of reindeer bells as you travel through the serene landscape, before stopping to warm up with a hot drink by the fire.
10km Husky Safari
Set off on a thrilling three-hour husky safari (12:30–15:30 on Monday and Sunday) and feel the excitement as a team of eager Arctic dogs pulls your sled through the snowy wilderness. After a briefing, ride in pairs and switch drivers at the halfway point to experience both mushing and relaxing as a passenger. Back at the kennel, warm up with a drink by the fire and learn more about the huskies’ training and way of life.
Aurora Hunting on Snowshoes
Capture the magic of a winter night in the Arctic on this two-hour guided walk (20:00–22:00 on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday). Equipped with snowshoes, trek through the silent forest under the glow of the moon and stars, stopping to admire the snowy landscapes. If conditions are right, you may even witness the Northern Lights dancing across the sky.
Aurora Borealis Snowmobile Sleigh Ride
Relax under the Arctic sky on this three-hour sleigh ride (20:00–23:00 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). Pulled by a snowmobile, you'll journey through the fells to an open area with uninterrupted views of the night sky. Sip warm berry juice as you take in the peaceful surroundings, and if you're lucky, watch the Northern Lights put on a dazzling display.
