Day 1 - Athens
Welcome to Athens! Upon your arrival, we will transfer you to your hotel, where you'll have some free time to settle in and explore at your own pace. In the afternoon, be sure to check the hotel reception for important information regarding the start of your tour. Enjoy your first moments in this historic city, teeming with ancient wonders and vibrant culture. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Athens
On Day 2, we will set off on an engaging city tour of Athens with a knowledgeable local guide. Our journey through this historic city will take us to prominent landmarks such as the Presidential Mansion, the iconic Panathenaic Stadium, host of the first modern Olympic Games, and the bustling squares in the heart of the city. As we explore, we will also visit some of the newer neighbourhoods that evolved following the 2004 Olympic Games. Our guided tour culminates at the renowned Acropolis, offering an impressive view of this ancient citadel (please note that admission is not included). In the evening, you can enjoy a leisurely visit to the historic neighbourhood of Plaka. Known for its enchanting Greek tavernas, Plaka presents a perfect opportunity to soak up the vibrant culture and folklore unique to Greece.
Day 3 - Athens - Kamena Vourla - Kalabaka
On our third day, we will set off early in the morning, venturing northward through Greece. Our first stop is in Kamena Vourla, a delightful seaside resort town known for its beautiful natural surroundings. As we continue our journey, we will pause at the historic Thermopylae Mountain Pass, famed for the legendary battle that took place here. Our next destination is the charming village of Kastraki, where you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy lunch amidst breathtaking views of the valley. Afterwards, we’ll explore the awe-inspiring Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its magnificent monasteries perched atop towering rock formations. Admission to one of these architectural marvels is included. As the day winds down, we’ll provide dinner in Kalabaka, where you can relax and reflect on the day’s wonders.
Day 4 - Kalabaka - Thessaloniki - Melnik - Sandanski
We continue our journey through the enchanting landscapes of northern Greece, journeying towards the stunning Aegean Sea. Our first stop today is Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city, where you will have the opportunity to explore this vibrant metropolis and enjoy a leisurely lunch. After taking in the sights of Thessaloniki, we make our way into Bulgaria, crossing the border into the beautiful region of Bulgarian Macedonia. Here, we'll visit the charming town of Melnik, known for its picturesque scenery and rich tradition of wine-making. Our day concludes in the serene spa town of Sandanski, famed as the birthplace of the legendary Spartacus. Here, dinner awaits, and we'll stay overnight.
Day 5 - Sandanski - Rila - Sofia
Today, we explore the splendour of Rila Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nestled within verdant forest surroundings and boasting a fortress-like design, this site offers a captivating glimpse into the region's spiritual heritage. After our visit, we’ll proceed to Sofia, aiming to arrive by late morning. Following lunch, we embark on a guided tour of Bulgaria's capital. Our exploration will reveal the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Russian Church, a historic mosque, and strolls through the city's squares and avenues, highlighting notable Stalinist architecture. The afternoon is yours to discover Sofia at your own pace, perhaps indulging in the city’s vibrant atmosphere or uncovering hidden local gems.
Day 6 - Sofia - Bachkovo - Plovdiv
On the sixth day of our journey, we embark on a cultural exploration starting with the Bachkovo Monastery. Founded in the eleventh century, it is Bulgaria's second most important monastery, featuring three churches nestled within a serene and tranquil setting. We then make our way to Plovdiv, arriving in time for a delightful lunch included in the itinerary. Following this, we’ll explore Plovdiv, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, boasting a fascinating history. Our tour includes entry to the Roman Amphitheatre, a magnificent relic of ancient times, along with visits to the historic Old Pharmacy and the distinctive Armenian House.
Day 7 - Plovdiv - Kazanlak - Shipka - Etar - Arbanasi - Veliko Tarnovo
Our journey today takes us through the magnificent landscapes of the Balkan Mountains. Your first stop in the Rose Valley is Kazanlak, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore the replica of the ancient Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, a remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you’ll also discover the region’s world-famous rose-based product industry. Continuing amidst the mountain scenery, we’ll visit the Shipka Memorial Church, a significant monument commemorating the Russo-Turkish War. We’ll then make our way to Etar, a quaint village that doubles as an open-air ethnographic museum. After enjoying an included lunch, we'll travel to Arbanasi, a historic trading town celebrated for its fortress-like architecture. During your visit, you’ll explore the Nativity Church, renowned for its incredible frescoes, with your entry already arranged. Our day will conclude in the charming medieval city of Veliko Tarnovo, once the capital of Bulgaria, noted for its stunning setting alongside a dramatic canyon. Please note that on occasion, we may visit Arbanasi on a Sunday morning instead.
Day 8 - Veliko Tarnovo - Basarbovo - Bucharest
We will journey from Veliko Tarnovo to Romania, pausing en route to explore the Basarbovo Monastery, an intriguing pilgrimage site uniquely carved into rock. Following this, we'll continue our travels across the border and traverse the Danube River, reaching Bucharest by approximately 1 p.m. In the afternoon, we'll embark on a panoramic tour of the city, taking in the rich history of the centre and the monumental Palace of Parliament. Afterwards, you'll have the opportunity to delve deeper into the city at your own pace. Dinner is included this evening.
Day 9 - Bucharest
After breakfast, we conclude our tour in Bucharest. As your journey ends, we hope the diverse experiences and the vibrant cultures you've encountered will leave you with lasting memories.
