Itinerary
Day 1 - Bhubaneswar
Arrive in Bhubaneswar, where we’ll meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. Later, we tour the city’s renowned temples – Parasurameshwar, Mukteshwar, Rajarani and Lingaraj – noting that non–Hindus are not permitted inside the main sanctum at Lingaraj. We then visit the Khandagiri and Udayagiri Jain caves and the Dhauli Rock Edicts. In the evening, we attend the light and sound show at Dhauli – closed on Monday. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 2 - Bhubaneshwar to Baliguda
After breakfast in Bhubaneswar, we drive to Baliguda (260 km – approx. 6 hours) along green rural roads, passing low hills covered in Sal forest and visiting a few Odia villages en route. On arrival in Baliguda, we check in to the hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure – you can relax and unwind.
Day 3 - Baliguda to Rayagada
Baliguda to Rayagada – 180 km – approximately 4 hours. After breakfast at the hotel, we visit the remote Barkhama village to meet members of the Kutia Kondh community, known for their distinctive geometric facial tattoos. We spend time in the village to observe daily life, learn a few words of Kui, and enjoy a picnic lunch. In the afternoon we drive to Rayagada and check in to the hotel. The rest of the day is free – you can relax at the hotel.
Day 4 - Journey to Jeypore
Rayagada – Chatikona – Koraput – Jeypore (220 km – around 6 hours’ drive). After an early breakfast, we drive to Chatikona to visit the weekly market (Wednesdays), where Dongria Kondh and Desia Kondh communities descend from the nearby Niyamagiri Hills to trade their produce and goods. The Dongria Kondh are known for distinct dress and jewellery and for maintaining animist traditions.
We then continue towards Jeypore, stopping en route at the Koraput Tribal Museum (open during daytime) to see exhibits of regional culture, including utensils, tools, clothing and paintings – some items are available for purchase. The museum also features a detailed display of the Jagannath Temple at Puri and a series of Jagannath statues in different ceremonial attire. We continue to Jeypore for check-in and an overnight stay.
Day 5 - Onukuadelli Day Trip
After an early breakfast, we drive from Jeypore to Onukuadelli, about 65 km away, to visit the weekly Bonda market – held on Thursdays – where communities from the surrounding hills gather to trade. The Bonda are known for distinctive attire, including layered bead necklaces, metal neck bands and arm bangles. We then continue to Lamtaput to visit Gadaba villages; while there are similarities in traditional dress, the Gadaba have their own styles, with colourful clothing and traditional jewellery. We return to Jeypore for dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel. Total driving today is around 200 km – approximately five hours.
Day 6 - Kunduli & Nandapur
Jeypore – Kunduli – Nandapur – Jeypore (about 180 km – 4 hours’ driving in total). After an early breakfast we drive to Kunduli Market – held on Fridays – and visit a few Paraja villages. We explore Kunduli, the region’s largest tribal marketplace, where we may encounter Sana Paroja and Mali communities; the Paroja are broadly divided into Bada Paroja and Sana Paroja. Men often wear loincloths and napkins, while women typically wear simple saris. You can pick up modest souvenirs or mementos at the market if you wish.
We then continue to Nandapur, once the capital of Jeypore, to see the 32-step throne known as Batrisa Simhasana, believed to have been built by Vikramaditya. The village is edged by small streams and features two striking boulders – one with sculptures and the other engraved with an elephant. Nearby, the shrine of Lord Sarveswar bears inscriptions that hint at the area’s past. We return to Jeypore for dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 7 - Kanger Valley National Park & Jagdalpur
Jeypore to Kanger Valley National Park to Jagdalpur (130 km – around 3 hours). After an early breakfast we drive to Kanger Valley National Park, named after the Kanger River that runs through its hilly terrain. We visit Tirathgarh Waterfall and explore limestone caves with striking stalactite and stalagmite formations. The park protects mixed moist deciduous forest dominated by sal, teak and bamboo, and supports diverse wildlife including tigers, leopards, sloth bears, chital and sambar, langurs and rhesus macaques, wild boar, striped hyena, and reptiles such as pythons, cobras, crocodiles and monitor lizards. Birdlife ranges from hill myna, spotted owlet, red jungle fowl and racket-tailed drongos to peacocks, steppe eagles, red spurfowl, treepie and herons.
After our safari we continue to Jagdalpur and check in at the hotel. Later we visit a Bison–Horn Maria community for a traditional ceremonial dance performance before returning to the hotel for the night.
Day 8 - Jagdalpur to Kanker
After breakfast in Jagdalpur, we visit the Anthropological Museum to learn about the tribal groups of Chhattisgarh. We then drive to Kanker – about 200 km and approximately 4 hours – stopping en route at the large tribal market in Lohandiguda, where communities from South Bastar gather to trade. We also visit Chitrakote Waterfall, a broad horseshoe shaped cascade on the Indravati River. On arrival in Kanker, we check in at Kanker Palace, set by the Doodh River and surrounded by dense forests, with notable traditions, tribal history and craftwork. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 9 - Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve
After breakfast, we visit Gadiya Mountain – associated with the Kandra king Dharma Dev, who, after defeating Kanker, made it his capital. A hidden cave here served as a refuge for the royal family, and a tank that never runs dry has parts named after his two daughters. Later, we drive to Tadoba Andhari National Park – approximately 300 km, around six hours by road – and check in at the resort. The remainder of the day is at leisure – you can relax. Overnight at the resort.
Day 10 - Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve Safari
After breakfast at the resort, we set out on a morning safari in Tadoba Tiger Reserve. We return for lunch and a short break, then head back out for an afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight at the resort.
The reserve spans three ranges – Tadoba in the north, Kolsa in the south and Moharli between them – and is fed by Tadoba and Kolsa lakes and the Tadoba River. The forests feature teak, bamboo and other native species, and the wildlife includes tigers, Indian leopards, sloth bears, gaur, nilgai, dhole, deer such as chital and sambar, marsh crocodiles, Indian pythons and cobras, along with rich birdlife including peafowl and crested serpent eagles.
