Itinerary
Day 1 - Exploring Mumbai
Arrive in Mumbai. We’ll meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel – check-in is from 12:00; early check-in is subject to availability and can be pre-booked at an additional cost.
Later, we set out on a guided city tour of Mumbai, known for Bollywood, the beach, finance and lively nightlife, as well as excellent dining, malls and landmark buildings. We visit the Gateway of India – built to commemorate the visit of King George V in 1911 – and the excellent Prince of Wales Museum. From here, we stroll through the historic Colaba district to admire its impressive Gothic Victorian architecture, then continue to Malabar Hill for far-reaching views over the city. We end the day at the colourful Dhobi Ghats, where traditional laundrymen collect, wash and return the city’s linen. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 2 - Fly to Ahmedabad
After breakfast at the hotel, we transfer you to the airport for your flight from Mumbai to Ahmedabad (flight not included). On arrival, we collect you and take you to the hotel.
Renowned for its architecture, cuisine and warm hospitality, Ahmedabad showcases a remarkable built heritage – from 11th century stepwells, 15th–16th century mosques and mausoleum complexes, elegant havelis, and historic Hindu and Jain temples to 18th–19th century buildings with European influences – and it is also home to modern masterpieces by Charles Correa and Le Corbusier. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 3 - Exploring Ahmedabad
Meet our guide to explore Ahmedabad. We visit the excellent Calico Museum of Textiles – known for its wide range of exhibits – and Sabarmati Ashram, founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1917 and the starting point of his 385 km Salt March to Dandi in 1930. We then continue to the monumental complex at Sarkhej with its 15th century mausoleum, before exploring the old quarter on foot to admire its beautiful havelis. Overnight at hotel.
Day 4 - Adalaj Stepwell, Modhera Sun Temple, Patan & Dasada
Ahmedabad – Adalaj – Modhera – Patan – Dasada (260 kilometres – around 5 hours, excluding visits). After breakfast at the hotel, we drive to the 15th‑century Adalaj Stepwell, then continue to the 11th‑century Sun Temple at Modhera, among Gujarat’s finest Hindu temples. We then head to Patan, once the capital of Gujarat before Ahmedabad was founded and known for its Patola silk weavers. Arrive in Dasada and settle in for two nights at Rann Riders Camp on the edge of the Rann of Kutch. Dinner and overnight in camp.
Day 5 - Little Rann of Kutch Birdwatching
Drive into the Little Rann of Kutch for birdwatching – a haven for enthusiasts, with species ranging from plovers and chats to flamingos and storks. Birding is best from October to March. We also visit local areas around Dasada, including pastoral Vadiara and the goat herders of Ambala. Lunch and dinner are served back at camp, where we stay overnight.
Day 6 - Dasada to Bhuj
Dasada to Bhuj – 260 km, around 5 hours. After breakfast, we return to the Little Rann of Kutch for a final exploration. We then leave Dasada and continue by road to Bhuj, stopping en route to visit the lakeside palace at Halvad. Bhuj, the capital of the Kutch region, retains an atmospheric old walled city – you can wander the narrow alleyways of the citadel later in the day. Overnight at hotel.
Day 7 - Bhuj to Hodka
After breakfast at the hotel, we drive north from Bhuj to the small rural hamlet of Hodka – about 65 kilometres, taking approximately 1.3 hours – and check in for two nights at the Shaam–e–Sarhad Rural Resort. Handicrafts are a living tradition in the Kutch region, and over the next two days we visit neighbouring Banni villages, home to the Hindu communities of the Ahir and Rabari as well as the Muslim villages of the Muthwas and Jaths. Lunch and dinner are included today, and we stay overnight at the resort.
Day 8 - Exploring Hodka & Surroundings
Spend the day exploring the villages around Hodka, known for their rich artistic traditions – intricate embroidery, block painting, pottery, leather craft and silver work. Little has changed here over the years, and you will see how these communities balance time‑honoured crafts with livelihoods based on trading sheep, goats, camels, buffaloes and other livestock. Lunch and dinner are included, and we stay overnight at the resort.
Day 9 - Hodka to Gondal
After breakfast, we drive 300 kilometres – approximately six hours – from Hodka to Gondal. On arrival, we check in for two nights at the Gondal Orchard Palace Hotel, the guesthouse of Huzoor Palace where the owners – descendants of the former rulers – still reside. Surrounded by wheat and cotton fields, Gondal is a fascinating town that was among the most progressive and affluent states during British rule. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 10 - Exploring Gondal
Spend the day exploring Gondal. We visit the Naulakha Palace – noted for its intricate stone carvings and a museum of princely memorabilia – and stop at Bhuvaneshwari Pharmacy, where traditional Ayurvedic medicines have been produced for decades. We also view the ruling family’s collection of vintage and classic cars at the Huzoor Palace estate – around thirty vehicles can be seen. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 11 - Junagadh & Sasan Gir National Park
After breakfast at the hotel, we drive 150 km – around 3 hours – from Gondal to Sasan Gir, stopping in Junagadh en route. Dinner and overnight at the resort or camp.
Day 12 - Searching for the Asiatic Lion
We explore Sasan Gir with two jeep safaris – one at first light and another in the late afternoon. This attractive sanctuary is home to the rare Asiatic lion and also has good populations of nilgai, sambar and chital, along with a rich variety of birdlife. Between drives, you can relax at the resort. Lunch, dinner and overnight at the resort/camp.
Day 13 - Journey to Palitana
Sasan Gir – Palitana (225 km – approx. 5 hours). After breakfast at the resort, we drive to Palitana to see its remarkable Jain temple complex. The hills here – known as the Abode of the Gods – are crowned with 863 temples built over more than 900 years, their finely carved spires and towers catching the sunlight as pilgrims make the uphill journey on foot. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 14 - Lothal & Vadodara
This morning you may wish to join the pilgrims and climb the 4,000 steps to the Palitana temples. Later, we drive to Vadodara via Lothal, stopping to explore one of the subcontinent’s most important Harappan archaeological sites.
