Itinerary
Day 1 - Hyderabad to Gulbarga & Bijapur
Leaving Hyderabad, we set out for Bijapur via Gulbarga – a journey of about 385 km taking around 7 hours.
En route, we explore Gulbarga Fort from the Bahmani period and the impressive Jama Masjid within its walls. We also visit the Sharana Basaveshwara Temple and the tranquil tomb of the Sufi saint Khwaja Bande Nawaz, noted for its Persian-style tilework and fine carvings. On arrival in Bijapur, we check in to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 2 - Bijapur & Hampi
Bijapur – Hampi (215 km – 4 hours approx). After breakfast, we delve deeper into Bijapur’s architectural heritage at Bijapur Fort – a complex of significant monuments from the Adil Shahi era. The Adil Shahi sultans, who ruled for nearly 200 years, invested heavily in architecture, and the city is often referred to as the Agra of South India. We visit Asar Mahal, noted for its Indo‑Islamic design, detailed paintings and fine woodwork, and explore Bara Kaman – an unfinished mausoleum with clear Persian influences. We ascend Gol Gumbaz, famed for its vast dome – the world’s second largest – and its whispering gallery. We also visit the Jama Masjid and the distinctive Mehtar Mahal with its elegant minarets.
In the afternoon, we drive onward to Hampi – a UNESCO World Heritage site on the River Tungabhadra. On arrival at your Hampi hotel, you can unwind and settle in, ready for tomorrow’s explorations. Overnight at hotel.
Day 3 - Exploring Hampi
Hampi We spend the day exploring Hampi’s Royal Enclosure and its standout monuments. At the Hazara Rama Temple – once used for ceremonial processions – we admire the bas‑relief panels narrating episodes from the Ramayana, along with 15th century carvings of elephants, horses, soldiers and dancers. Nearby, the King’s Balance – a 5 metres tall stone arch with three visible loops on its beam – brings old royal rituals to life. We then climb the Mahanavami Dibba, erected by King Krishnadevaraya after his victory at Udayagiri and the tallest structure in the Royal Enclosure, known for its ornate carvings. The enclosure itself feels like an open‑air museum, reflecting both the sophistication of Vijayanagara architecture and the damage the city sustained after the empire’s decline.
We continue to the Ugra Narasimha Statue – a single‑stone image of Lakshmi Narasimha set to the south of Hampi – before visiting Virupaksha Temple, a landmark of fully developed Dravidian architecture. We also explore the 16th century Vittala Temple, dedicated to Lord Vittala – an aspect of Vishnu – on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra River, celebrated for its intricate carvings and outstanding architecture. In the Zenana Enclosure, we see the Lotus Mahal with its distinctive form.
The rest of the day is free for you to relax at the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 4 - Return to Hyderabad
After breakfast at the hotel, we depart Hampi for Hyderabad – a drive of approximately 380 km taking around seven hours – and on arrival we drop you at your hotel or at the airport.
