South India Temple Route

Arrive in Bangalore. We’ll greet you at the airport and assist with formalities, then provide a private transfer to your hotel with a brief orientation to the city en route. On arrival, check in and unwind after your journey. In the evening, you can take a relaxed stroll around the hotel’s neighbourhood. Overnight at your hotel.

We begin with a morning exploration of Lalbagh Botanical Garden in Bengaluru, accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who shares the garden’s history and botanical diversity. We then visit Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace to appreciate its architecture and artefacts, followed by a guided tour of Bangalore Palace – walking through opulent rooms, royal artefacts and expansive grounds for a glimpse into the lives of the erstwhile maharajas. Later, we drive past the iconic Vidhana Soudha – the seat of Karnataka’s state legislature – and conclude at the Bull Temple, dedicated to the sacred bull Nandi and carved from a single block of granite. Bangalore – Vellore (220 kilometres – 5 hours approx). We drive to Vellore, taking in the changing countryside en route. On arrival we visit the Golden Temple at Sripuram, exploring the meditation hall, the Sacred Water Tank and the surrounding gardens. We continue to Vellore Fort for a guided visit with a local historian, noting its defensive ramparts, stone carvings and interior tunnels. We then visit Jalakandeswarar Temple, renowned for its intricate sculpture and tall gopurams – here we attend a traditional puja and observe the temple rituals – followed by a stop at the nearby Sri Lakshmi Narsimha Swamy Temple. Overnight at the hotel.

Vellore to Kanchipuram to Chennai – 145 kilometres – around 3 hours’ driving, plus time for visits. We leave Vellore for Chennai, pausing in Kanchipuram to explore three of its celebrated temples – Ekambareswarar, Varadaraja Perumal and Kailasanathar – admired for their Dravidian architecture and intricate stone carvings. On arrival in Chennai, we check in at the hotel before visiting Fort St George and the Fort Museum to trace the city’s colonial era and the role of the British East India Company. We then continue to Kapaleeshwarar Temple, a revered Shiva shrine, to appreciate its colourful gopurams and lively market surroundings and to attend the evening aarti. Overnight in Chennai.

Chennai to Pondicherry – 160 kilometres, around 3 hours. We drive south with a stop at Mahabalipuram to explore its UNESCO World Heritage monuments, including the Shore Temple, the Five Rathas and Arjuna’s Penance – remarkable for their rock‑cut sculpture, bas‑reliefs and monolithic forms. On arrival in Pondicherry, we visit Auroville, an international township focused on sustainable living and human unity, and explore the Matrimandir. You can opt to join a guided tour to learn more about Auroville’s philosophy, take part in workshops and browse for eco‑friendly products. We then explore the French Quarter’s colonial‑era streets, tree‑lined avenues and cafés, stroll the Promenade Beach and visit the French War Memorial. You may wish to browse boutiques for handmade soaps, clothing and handicrafts. We conclude with Sri Aurobindo Ashram, a spiritual centre founded by Sri Aurobindo and The Mother; you can attend the evening meditation, join yoga classes and visit the bookshop for spiritual literature. Overnight at hotel.

We travel from Pondicherry to Thanjavur via Chidambaram, Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Darasuram – around 180 km, approximately 4 hours by road. In Chidambaram, we visit the Thillai Nataraja Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva as the cosmic dancer – we witness daily rituals, admire the intricate sculptures and, if taking place, attend special Bharatanatyam performances. We continue to Gangaikonda Cholapuram to explore the Brihadisvara Temple, including the Nandi Mandapam and the vast sculpted walls that showcase Chola craftsmanship. We then discover the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, appreciating its fine carvings that depict mythological stories and celestial figures. On arrival in Thanjavur, we check in at the hotel for the night.

From Thanjavur, we begin at the UNESCO‑listed Brihadeeswara Temple, a landmark of Dravidian architecture. We explore the complex, see the colossal Nandi in its mandapam and, if timing permits, observe rituals at the sanctum. We then tour the Royal Palace Complex – including the Saraswathi Mahal Library and Art Gallery – to view rare manuscripts, artworks and artefacts from the Chola and Nayak periods. Later, we drive to Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) – 65 km, about 1 hour 20 minutes – to visit the vast Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, followed by the Rock Fort Temple. We climb the steps for panoramic city views and visit the hilltop sanctuaries before concluding with a transfer to Trichy airport for your onward flight.
