Itinerary
Day 1 - Rome - Naples - Capri - Sorrento - Salerno
We start early, leaving Rome and travelling south to Naples, where we board the ferry to the island of Capri – ferry tickets are included. On Capri, you can choose to visit the White Grotto or ride the cable car up to the centre. After lunch at your own pace, we take the boat to Sorrento – a picturesque town at the foot of the cliffs – where you’ll have time to stroll and explore. We then continue along the Gulf of Salerno to spend the night in Salerno.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Salerno - Paola - Mesina - Taormina
We travel south through Cilento National Park to Paola on the Tyrrhenian coast. We visit the Sanctuary of St Francis of Paola, then you have free time for lunch in the historic centre. We continue to Villa San Giovanni to board the short ferry to Sicily. On arrival in Messina, we have time to stroll around the cathedral before continuing to Taormina. Dinner is included. Accommodation is normally in the Taormina area – on some dates it may be in Messina.
Day 3 - Taormina - Giardini Naxos - Villa Romana del Casale - Palermo
At the foot of Mount Etna lies Taormina – once described by Churchill as one of the most beautiful places on earth. Early this morning we head to nearby Giardini Naxos, the first Greek settlement in Sicily founded in 734 BC, known for its seafront promenade and popular beaches. We then return to Taormina, where you have time to stroll the lively old town and, if you wish, visit the Greek Theatre for its sweeping views.After lunch we travel inland to the Villa Romana del Casale for our included admission and guided visit – a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the fourth century layout survives and richly detailed mosaics decorate almost every room. We then cross the mountainous heart of the island to Palermo, arriving towards evening. Dinner is included.
Day 4 - Palermo
Today we explore Palermo on a guided city tour with a local expert. We visit the cathedral – a showcase of diverse architectural styles and home to royal tombs – with admission included. We also take in the Palazzo dei Normanni, the former royal palace, along with nearby fountains, markets and gardens. We then continue to Monreale to visit its cathedral – admission included – a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its golden mosaics that line the interior. The afternoon is yours to spend at leisure.Note: For smaller groups, this programme may operate as a regular excursion run by local companies rather than a private tour.
Day 5 - Palermo
After breakfast, we conclude the tour in Palermo – bringing your journey to a close with wonderful memories.
