Set off from Rome and finish back in the Eternal City over 15 days – a laid back sweep through Italy’s icons and hidden corners. You’ll tour ancient Rome and Vatican City, then drift through Tuscany’s hill towns and Florence’s Renaissance treasures. Expect the Leaning Tower, colourful Cinque Terre by train, Portofino, Milan and the Italian Lakes. Continue to Verona and canal laced Venice with a boat to St Mark’s – plus Padua and San Marino. In Umbria explore Perugia’s medieval core and Assisi, before heading south for Naples, Capri and Sorrento. Round things off with Pompeii’s ruins and Cassino’s abbey before returning to Rome.

Itinerary
Day 1 - Rome
Welcome to Rome. We’ll transfer you to the hotel, then you’ll have free time. You will receive information in the afternoon, either directly from our team or via the information board at hotel reception.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Rome
In the morning we’ll enjoy a three-hour guided tour of the Eternal City, combining a walk through Imperial Rome with a panoramic coach drive. We’ll see the Arch of Constantine, the exterior of the Colosseum and the Imperial Forums, the Circus Maximus, the Baths of Caracalla, the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, the Pyramid of Cestius and Castel Sant’Angelo. The tour ends at Vatican City around 11:00 a.m. Afterwards our guide will offer an optional visit to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel – you can join if you wish. In the evening we include a transfer from the hotel to Trastevere, famed for its cosy restaurants and lively atmosphere – return to the hotel is around 8:30 p.m.
Day 3 - Rome
A free day in Rome – you can continue exploring this remarkable city at your own pace.
Day 4 - Rome - Orvieto - Castiglione del Lago - Siena
Today we journey through Umbria. Our first stop is Orvieto, set high on a plateau – we pause at the viewpoint, then ride the escalators to the medieval centre to admire the cathedral, a masterpiece of Italian Gothic. We continue to Castiglione del Lago on Lake Trasimeno, where you’ll have time for a stroll and lunch. Afterward we travel to Siena, renowned for Piazza del Campo and the Duomo, and spend the afternoon there.
Day 5 - Siena - Monteriggioni - San Gimignano - Florence
We depart Siena for Monteriggioni to wander its cobbled streets and ancient walls, then continue to San Gimignano, famed for its soaring medieval towers. After lunch we travel to Florence, arriving in the Vittorio Veneto area to walk into the historic centre and enjoy the Florentine atmosphere. Those interested in art may choose to visit the Uffizi Gallery or the Accademia Gallery – please note both are closed on Mondays. Dinner is included. Due to city traffic regulations our coach drops us at Vittorio Veneto and we walk to the centre – comfortable shoes recommended. Transfer to the hotel is scheduled at 7:30 p.m.
Day 6 - Florence
After a photo stop at the Michelangelo viewpoint with superb city vistas, we walk to the historic centre for a guided tour of Florence, cradle of the Renaissance. We admire the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Ponte Vecchio with its goldsmiths and Piazza della Signoria, the city’s political heart. Free time follows the tour – comfortable shoes recommended.
Day 7 - Florence - Pisa - Cinque Terre - Genoa
Today we travel to Pisa, where a small tourist train takes us to the Piazza dei Miracoli to view the Leaning Tower. We then continue to the Ligurian Riviera to visit the Cinque Terre by rail – tickets included – reaching one of its villages, normally Vernazza, though on busy dates it may be Manarola or Corniglia. We have time for lunch, then take the train to Levanto to rejoin our coach and continue to Genoa, where you’ll have free time to explore the historic centre, once the heart of a powerful medieval republic. Note: the Cinque Terre trains are regular commuter services and can be crowded – waits are possible and seats are not guaranteed.
Day 8 - Genoa - Portofino - Milan
We continue to Rapallo and board a boat to Portofino, one of Europe’s most exclusive coastal villages – enjoy a seaside stroll and time at leisure. After lunch we travel to Milan, where you’ll have free time to explore this elegant northern city; we suggest visiting the Gothic cathedral in Piazza del Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Please note that in adverse weather or in winter the boat to Portofino may not operate.
Day 9 - Milan - Lakes Region - Verona
Today we explore the Italian Lakes. We first reach Lake Orta and take a short train to Orta San Giulio’s medieval centre, then a boat to the Island of San Giulio. We continue to Lake Maggiore and stop in Stresa, where you may choose to visit the Borromean Islands – the highlight is Isola Bella with its gardens and palace (closed in winter). We have time for lunch before travelling on to Verona.
Day 10 - Verona - Venice
We have time to discover Verona, the enchanting city of Romeo and Juliet, before departing for Venice and arriving around 1:00 p.m. We include a boat to St Mark’s Square and a guided walking tour of the canalside heart of the city, including a visit to see Murano glasswork. Afterwards you have free time – you may choose to take a gondola ride. Accommodation is in the Mestre district.
Day 11 - Venice - Padua - San Marino - Gubbio - Perugia
We travel to Padua, an important pilgrimage city, where we visit the Saint’s Basilica. We then continue along the Adriatic to San Marino, the charming independent republic perched on a fortified mountain. After lunch we cross the Apennines to Gubbio, beautifully preserved with the Palace of the Consuls and a cathedral dating from the 12th century, before arriving in Perugia.
Day 12 - Perugia - Assisi - Rome - Naples
We take a panoramic tour of Perugia, the beautiful historic city also known as the city of chocolate. With a local guide we ascend via moving walkways across the rocky outcrop and explore its medieval underground city, with stone paved streets and inviting squares. Afterwards we head to Assisi, with time for lunch and a visit to the Basilica of St Francis. In the afternoon we continue south – sometimes stopping in Rome to drop off passengers – and arrive in Naples in the evening.
Day 13 - Naples - Capri - Sorrento - Salerno
After breakfast we head to the port of Naples to board a ferry to Capri. You may take the funicular up to Capri town to stroll and savour the views. After lunch we sail back and continue to Sorrento, where you’ll have free time to wander, then travel onward to Salerno for the night.
Day 14 - Salerno - Pompeii - Naples - Cassino - Rome
We begin with a guided visit to Pompeii – tickets included – to admire the remains of the Roman city buried by Vesuvius. We then continue to Naples, one of Italy’s most captivating cities and among the oldest continuously inhabited in Europe; its vast historic quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will have time to explore and enjoy lunch. We then continue to Cassino, where you can visit the magnificent abbey, site of a major Second World War battle. Our journey concludes in Rome in the evening.
Day 15 - Rome
After breakfast our journey comes to an end – we hope you leave with wonderful memories.
