Day 1 - Tokyo
Welcome to Japan! Upon clearing customs, you'll be whisked away to your hotel via a shared shuttle bus. The remainder of the day is at your disposal to explore Tokyo at your own pace. In the afternoon, we'll provide you with all the important details about the start of your upcoming tour. Enjoy the rest of your day, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of this dynamic city. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Tokyo
In the morning, we begin an immersive guided tour of Tokyo, a city where vibrant modernity and serene tradition coexist. Our exploration starts at Zojoji Temple, where you'll capture a classic view of Tokyo Tower framed by the temple's traditional architecture. Here, you'll find a unique display of Jizo statues—stone figures dressed in cheerful knit caps and bibs—thought to protect children. Our next destination is Shibuya Crossing, famed as the world's busiest pedestrian intersection. We then visit Meiji Shrine, dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, offering a peaceful retreat amidst the city's hustle and bustle. The tour continues with a scenic bus drive along Omotesando Avenue, renowned for its elegant boutiques. We'll see the picturesque Imperial Palace Gardens and pause at the iconic Nijubashi Bridge for photos.As we journey through Akihabara, also known as "Electric Town," you'll witness the vibrant hub of anime and manga culture. We'll drive past the Kokugikan, Japan's celebrated sumo wrestling arena, before concluding our morning tour in Asakusa. Here, we'll visit the historic Sensoji Temple and the lively Nakamise Street, filled with traditional shops. We include a lunch at a local restaurant, offering you a taste of Japanese cuisine.Returning to the hotel, you'll have time to relax before we reconvene at 6:30 p.m. Our guide will lead us to the bustling Shinjuku district via metro (tickets included), where the vibrant nightlife and bustling atmosphere await. Dinner is included at a local restaurant, offering an authentic local dining experience. After the meal, we return to our hotel by metro, accompanied by our guide.
Day 3 - Tokyo - Hiroshima
Following breakfast, we will transfer to the station and embark on a four-hour journey aboard the bullet train to Hiroshima, covering approximately 800 kilometres. Upon arrival, we will delve into the profound history of this city, forever etched by the events of 1945 when the atomic bomb struck. Our itinerary includes a reflective walk through the Peace Memorial Park, a visit to the Atomic Bomb Dome, and an exploration of the Peace Memorial Museum—the latter a moving testament to the resilience and hope that followed such tremendous destruction.Later, we will board a ferry to an island known as the meeting place of gods and humanity. Here, you will have the opportunity to explore the renowned Itsukushima Shrine, which is partially constructed over the sea and dedicated to the sea's guardian. You'll have time to wander through the picturesque centre of the island and enjoy a leisurely lunch. In the evening, we'll return to Hiroshima, where dinner is included in the day's plans. Please note, the sequence of our visits in Hiroshima may vary, but rest assured, you'll experience everything as planned.
Day 4 - Hiroshima - Matsuyama
Today, we'll embark on a delightful ferry journey to Shikoku Island, a two-and-a-half-hour trip that offers a glimpse into Japan's island geography. Upon arrival in Matsuyama, we'll ascend via cable car to explore the remarkable Matsuyama Castle. This visit is followed by a trip to the beautiful Ishiteji Temple, a revered Buddhist site and a popular pilgrimage destination. Lunch will be served at a local eatery. In the afternoon, we'll treat you to a visit to Dogo Onsen, one of Japan's oldest bathhouses, renowned for its traditional architecture and historical significance.
Day 5 - Matsuyama - Kotohira - Takamatsu - Naruto - Kobe
Today, we travel to Kotohira to visit a revered Shinto shrine dedicated to the God of sailors, perched atop Mount Zosu and accessible by ascending 785 steps. This site is an important pilgrimage destination and offers breathtaking views upon reaching the summit. After our visit, we make our way to Takamatsu, where we’ll explore Ritsurin Garden, renowned as one of Japan's most stunning gardens. After lunch at a local restaurant, we proceed to the town of Naruto. Here, we will pause at the impressive Naruto Bridge, which offers a thrilling opportunity to walk along its glass floor, 45 metres above the ocean. From this vantage point, we observe the powerful whirlpools swirling below.Our journey continues along a scenic route, crossing a series of striking bridges that elegantly connect the islands over the sea. We’ll arrive in Kobe in the evening, where accommodation is arranged for the night.
Day 6 - Kobe - Osaka - Koyasan (Mount Koya)
Today, our adventure begins in Kobe, where we will delve into the poignant history at the Earthquake Memorial Museum. This site pays tribute to the devastating 1995 earthquake that shook the city, offering a glimpse into its resilient recovery and reconstruction efforts. Next, we head to Osaka, a bustling metropolis known for its modern architecture and vibrant street life. After a brief visit, our journey takes us to the tranquil and sacred Mount Koya, the spiritual heart of Shingon Buddhism in Japan. Here, amongst its 120 temples and monasteries, we will explore the revered Okuno Mausoleum, a spiritual site nestled in a forest, home to over 200,000 graves. We'll also visit the historic Kongobuji Temple, established in 1593, immersed in the tranquillity found in its exquisite surroundings. Tonight, we embrace an authentic experience by staying overnight in a Buddhist monastery—a unique opportunity to engage in a Zen meditation session led by the resident monks. A vegetarian dinner will be provided, and if you choose, you may participate in the morning religious ceremony before breakfast. Please note that our accommodation reflects traditional Japanese living with tatami mats and shared bathroom facilities. In instances of high visitor numbers, alternative hotel arrangements nearby may be made, with dinner included. For some travel dates, the Earthquake Museum visit might be replaced by a stop at the Sake Museum or a journey up Kobe Tower.
Day 7 - Koyasan (Mount Koya) - Kyoto
After enjoying a traditional Japanese breakfast at the temple on Mount Koya, we'll set off for the historic city of Kyoto, Japan’s capital from 794 to 1868 and the home of the Imperial Court. Remarkably, Kyoto was spared from WWII bombings, allowing its rich artistic and cultural heritage to remain largely intact. Notably, the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas emissions was signed here in 1997. Our exploration begins at the Shinto Shrine of Fushimi Inari, followed by the majestic Imperial Palace and the stunning gardens of the Kinkaku-ji Temple, famously known as the "Golden Pavilion." You'll then have some free time to wander at your leisure before we head to Gion, a vibrant traditional district celebrated for its Geisha culture. You'll have more free time here to absorb the unique atmosphere. Should you have previously visited Kyoto during your tour, our guide will happily offer suggestions for alternative sights to explore independently.
Day 8 - Kyoto - Eihei-ji - Katsuyama-dinosaur museum - Katsuyama - Kanazawa
After breakfast, we will set off on our adventure, first travelling alongside one of Japan's largest lakes. Our initial stop is at Shirahige Ginra, a charming shrine nestled by the water's edge. Following this, we venture to Eihei-ji, a significant Zen Buddhist temple-monastery founded in 1244. Eihei-ji's serene setting, distinct architecture, and beautiful gardens make it a major centre for monks practising Zazen meditation and adhering to a strict dietary regimen.Our journey continues to Katsuyama, where we will explore three fascinating sites. First on the list is the Dinosaur Museum, situated at the country's largest dinosaur fossil excavation site. Here, you are free to have lunch and delve into the engaging exhibits, which feature over 40 dinosaur skeletons. Next, we will visit the Great Buddha of Echizen along with its grand temple. Ascend the five-storey pagoda to take in breathtaking panoramic views. As evening approaches, we will reach Kanazawa, where you can unwind and reflect on the day's experiences.
Day 9 - Kanazawa
Today, we'll delve into the captivating city of Kanazawa. Our morning begins with a guided exploration of this city, a former rival of Kyoto and Tokyo that was fortunately spared from the ravages of World War II air raids. We'll start with a visit to the castle area, where you'll be impressed by its formidable walls. Then, we'll wander through the historic Nagamachi neighbourhood, a testament to Kanazawa's samurai past. Here, you’ll find the atmosphere of bygone days preserved, with traditional residences, earthen walls, private gates, narrow passageways, and serene water canals.Our tour includes a visit to Kenrokuen, one of Japan's three most exquisite gardens, celebrated for its beauty and history. The morning's adventure concludes at Omicho Market, a bustling hub where you can experience the vibrant local culture and savour a variety of traditional lunch options. The afternoon is yours to enjoy, whether you choose to further explore Kanazawa, shop for local crafts, or relax and soak in the unique atmosphere of this remarkable city.
Day 10 - Kanazawa - Ainokura - Shirakawa - Hida village - Takayama
Today, we'll traverse the stunning landscapes of the Gokayama and Shirakawa-go regions, renowned for their picturesque mountain scenery and traditional villages. These areas are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, celebrated for their unique gassho-zukuri architecture – houses with steep thatched roofs resembling the praying hands of Buddhist monks, designed to withstand heavy snowfalls. Our journey begins with a visit to Ainokura, a quaint village offering a glimpse into Japan's rural life. We'll then continue to Shirakawa-go, specifically the Ogimachi village, which is larger and popular with visitors. Here, you'll have time to wander through the village and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, we'll head to Takayama to explore the Hida Folk Village Museum. This open-air museum, set in a tranquil location, features over 30 traditional houses from the Edo Period, each relocated to showcase the region's heritage. Inside, you'll find displays of tools and utensils providing insight into daily life in historical Japan. Afterwards, enjoy free time to explore Takayama's old town with its charming wooden houses and traditional shops.
Day 11 - Takayama - Hida furukawa - Matsumoto - Nagano
After breakfast, we will set off for Hida Furukawa, a charming town known for its beautifully preserved old quarter. Here, you'll have the chance to walk along its historic streets, where the town's festival—recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage—is celebrated with large drums and intricately decorated floats. Our visit includes a tour of the museum displaying these festival floats, costumes, and drums. Later, we will traverse the scenic Japanese Alps, noted for their splendid, often snow-covered vistas. Once we arrive in Matsumoto, we'll explore its iconic "Crow Castle," a striking black structure dating back to the 16th century. Following the visit, you'll have some free time to find lunch and wander through the charming town. In the afternoon, we will continue our journey to Nagano, where we will settle for the night.
Day 12 - Nagano - Monkey Park - Kusatsu - Ikaho
Our day in Nagano begins with a visit to the revered Zenko-ji Temple, which holds the first Buddhist image ever brought to Japan. Here, you'll witness the Gomakuyo ceremony, designed to bring blessings and good fortune. Next, we venture into the breathtaking Japanese Alps to experience the Jigokudani Monkey Park. Enjoy lunch and a peaceful walk through forested landscapes dotted with rivers and hot springs, home to colonies of Japanese macaques that famously bathe in the natural hot waters.Ascending to the high mountain landscapes at an elevation of 2,172 metres, you'll encounter stunning vistas and semi-active volcanoes. Our journey continues to Kusatsu, a bustling spa town with a vibrant main square, where we'll take a leisurely stroll through the city park, home to an open-air onsen. We then proceed to Ikaho, another charming spa town, where you'll enjoy wandering its historic centre with its iconic stair-stepped streets. Tonight's accommodation is at a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn where you'll relax in the baths and enjoy an included traditional Japanese dinner.Please note that during autumn, the movements of the monkeys can be unpredictable due to the availability of mountain fruits, which may affect the park's accessibility. Also, weather conditions from November to April might result in the cancellation of the visit to Kusatsu.
Day 13 - Ikaho - Nikko - Tokyo
We continue our adventure to Nikko, a remarkable town steeped in history and beauty. Our first stop is the awe-inspiring Nikko-Toshogu Temple, renowned for its 'Room with the Sound of a Dragon', a space known for its unique acoustics. We'll then visit the Taiyuinbyo Mausoleum, a site of serene beauty and cultural significance. After exploring these magnificent sites, we'll take a peaceful walk along the Kanmangafuchi Abyss, where the tranquil presence of hundreds of Jizo statues overlooks the riverbanks. These figures are revered as guardian deities. You'll have some time to explore the charming town centre at your leisure before we make our way back to Tokyo, arriving at approximately 6:30 p.m.
Day 14 - Tokyo
On the final day, enjoy breakfast and take a moment to reflect on the memorable experiences from your journey. Your adventure in Japan concludes today, but the lasting memories you've created will stay with you. Safe travels on your onward journey!
