Day 1 - Lisbon
Welcome to Lisbon. On arrival, we arrange your transfer to the hotel – the rest of the day is free for you to settle in or start exploring at your own pace. From this afternoon, please check the information boards at the hotel reception for details about the start of your tour.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Lisbon
This morning we take a city tour of Lisbon, the Portuguese capital of seven hills, winding alleys and patterned azulejo tiles, and we visit Belém – the riverside neighbourhood from which Portuguese navigators set out in the fifteenth century. The afternoon is free – you can stroll to Bairro Alto and its viewpoint, or join an optional excursion to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril. In the evening, we return to the hotel from lively Restauradores Square, lined with bars and cafés.
Day 3 - Lisbon - Lagos - Cape St. Vincent - Albufeira
We depart early from Lisbon, crossing the long bridge over the Tagus as we head south into the Algarve. In Lagos we explore the historic centre enclosed by its old walls and learn about its strategic port, once a departure point for voyages to Africa. There is free time for lunch. In the afternoon we continue along windswept cliffs to Cape St. Vincent – the south western tip of Portugal – and pause nearby to photograph the historic Sagres fortress. Later we spend time in Albufeira, where you can relax on the beach or wander its lively historic centre. Overnight in Albufeira or a neighbouring town in the Algarve.
Day 4 - Albufeira - Mértola - Evora
We travel to Faro, a peaceful Algarve city, for a relaxed stroll. From here we continue into the Alentejo to Mértola on the banks of the Guadiana River – a walled town museum and an important centre in the Muslim era, dominated by a large castle and whitewashed streets. We then continue to Évora to visit the Chapel of Bones – admission included – a unique chapel built with more than 5,000 skeletons. Afterwards we explore this walled UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its medieval palaces, Gothic religious buildings and ancient Roman temple.
Day 5 - Evora - Marvão - Castelo de Vide - Tomar - Fatima
We leave Évora and cross the Alentejo to Marvão, a picturesque walled town with far‑reaching views. We then continue to Castelo de Vide to see its impressive castle and walk the lanes of the old Jewish quarter – you can visit the medieval synagogue, now a museum, or simply explore the winding streets. After lunch we continue to Tomar for a visit to the Convent of Christ – admission included – a former castle and convent that belonged to the Order of the Templars. Before reaching Fátima we pause in Aljustrel, birthplace of the three shepherd children, to see Lucia’s house. On arrival in Fátima you’ll have free time at the Sanctuary – you can watch the candlelight procession if you wish, when it is not winter. Dinner included.
Day 6 - Fatima - Porto
We travel north to Porto, Portugal’s second–largest city, arriving around 11:00. On arrival we take a 50–minute cruise on the Douro aboard a traditional rabelo boat – an excellent way to admire the riverfront and bridges from the water. Afterwards you have free time to explore the lively Ribeira district, with its narrow lanes, historic merchants’ houses and waterside cafés, before we continue to the hotel.
Day 7 - Porto - Braga - Bom Jesus - Guimarães - Aveiro - Coimbra
We leave Porto this morning for the green landscapes of northern Portugal. In Braga – the country’s religious capital – we take a gentle stroll through the historic centre, home to an ancient cathedral, and ride the world’s oldest funicular up to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus for panoramic views. You may prefer to walk down the grand baroque stairway. We then continue to Guimarães, Portugal’s first capital, where the Palace of the Dukes reflects its historic significance; you’ll have free time for lunch here. Heading west to the Atlantic coast, we arrive in Aveiro – the “Venice of Portugal”, known for its colourful houses – where we include a Moliceiro boat ride to explore its canals and salt flats, with a tasting of a typical local sweet on board. We continue to Coimbra, reaching the city in the late afternoon – dinner is included at the hotel.
Day 8 - Coimbra - Batalha - Nazare - Obidos - Lisbon
We spend time in Coimbra, Portugal’s third‑largest city, taking in its ancient university and steep, characterful lanes. Continuing south, we visit the Monastery of Batalha – entrance included – an impressive medieval royal mausoleum. In Nazaré, a traditional fishing town and seaside resort, you’ll have time for lunch and a stroll, and we take the elevator up to the old town – tickets included – for sweeping ocean views. On the way to Lisbon, we stop in Óbidos to wander its whitewashed streets adorned with flowers. We arrive in Lisbon at approximately 7:30 pm.
Day 9 - Lisbon
After breakfast, our journey concludes in Lisbon – we hope you leave with lasting memories of your time in Portugal.
