Day 1 - Seoul
Upon arriving in Seoul, the vibrant capital of South Korea, you'll be greeted with a warm welcome and a convenient transfer to your hotel. After settling in, you'll have some time to unwind and explore at your own pace. In the afternoon, you will meet with your tour guide, who will provide detailed information about the exciting adventures that await on your journey. Familiarising yourself with the itinerary will help you make the most of your experience in this fascinating country, blending tradition with modern innovation. Enjoy your free time, embracing the unique energy and sights of Seoul. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Seoul
We commence our day with an early departure for the Cheorwon region, home to a significant part of the DMZ – the Demilitarised Zone separating South and North Korea. Our exploration includes the Second Tunnel, clandestinely constructed by North Korean forces and unearthed in 1975. Our journey continues to the Cheorwon Peace Observatory, which affords sweeping views of the DMZ and the initial villages of North Korea. Within the observatory, you can find a modest museum dedicated to commemorating the Korean War. Our route will then take us to the deserted Woljeong-ri railway station, followed by a visit to the Baek Ma Battle Memorial which pays tribute to the French UN battalion’s involvement in the conflict. A lunch is included during this day of exploration. Concluding our adventure in the region, we visit a local Makgeolli producer, where we learn about this traditional Korean rice liquor. We then return to Seoul by evening. Please note that the DMZ is a military area, and access can be restricted without prior notice. In such a case, an alternative itinerary will be arranged. Once back in Seoul, we advance with our guide to City Hall to view its striking tsunami-inspired architecture. Just opposite, we'll find the resplendent Deoksugung Palace, which is beautifully illuminated at night, highlighting Korea’s confluence of tradition and modernity. From here, we will stroll to the vibrant Myeongdong district, the largest shopping and entertainment hub in South Korea, meaning ‘bright town’. Dinner will be served at a local restaurant before we return to our hotel using the city's modern and efficient metro system, with tickets included.
Day 3 - Seoul
Today, we immerse ourselves in an exciting five-hour tour of Seoul. We'll begin with a visit to Changdeokgung Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled within a vast park and known for its collection of stunning architectural structures. The next stop takes us through Bukchon Hanok Village, a charming traditional neighbourhood filled with historic homes. Our exploration continues at the War Memorial of Korea, an impressive museum offering deep insights into Korea’s conflicts, especially highlighting the Korean War, where soldiers from numerous countries united under the United Nations. Lunch will be provided at a local restaurant. Afterward, we will venture to the vibrant Gangnam District, renowned for its shopping hubs and lively entertainment scene. To wrap up the day, we'll visit the towering Lotte World Tower, soaring 550 metres high. There, you can choose to ascend the tower (tickets are not included) or leisurely explore the nearby park and luxury shopping centres. Following this, we will return to the hotel, where you'll have additional free time to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.
Day 4 - Seoul - Suwon - Jeonju
Today, we'll begin by exploring Gyeongbokgung Palace, a magnificent site boasting over 600 years of history. Here, you may have the opportunity to witness the ceremonial changing of the guard – a spectacle not to be missed. Following our time at the palace, we'll bid farewell to Seoul and journey southward. Our first destination is Suwon, the former capital of Korea, known for its impressive city walls, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. While in Suwon, we will explore these remarkable fortifications and visit Hwaseong Haenggung, the historical summer palace. Lunch is included today, offering a taste of the local cuisine. We'll then continue our journey to Jeonju, where you'll discover its captivating historic centre, also known as the Hanok Village. This charming area is characterised by traditional houses, inviting art galleries, and quaint shops.
Day 5 - Jeonju - Damyang - Haeinsa - Busan
On our fifth day, we set off for Sunchang Gochujang Village, beautifully situated at the foot of Mount Amisan. This charming village, with its traditional hanok houses and scenic courtyards filled with clay pots called hang-a-ri, is renowned for the craftsmen who create gochujang, a quintessential Korean chilli paste, using age-old methods. You will enjoy a hands-on experience learning to make this famous sauce yourself. Our journey then takes us to Damyang, where we will explore the enchanting Juknokwon Bamboo Forest. The pathways here are among the country's most picturesque, offering a serene spot for meditation and a breath of fresh air. Discover local bamboo products, celebrated in venues like the Bamboo Museum. Lunch is included, featuring a unique local speciality: rice cooked and served inside a bamboo stalk. Surrounded by breathtaking mountain landscapes, we continue to Haeinsa, one of Korea’s most significant Buddhist temples and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 802, the temple is home to the Tripitaka, an unparalleled collection of Buddhist scriptures carved on 80,000 wooden tablets. We’ll conclude the day with a journey to Busan—Korea’s vibrant second-largest city—for our overnight stay.
Day 6 - Busan - Busan - Shimonoseki Ferry
On the morning of day six, we set off from Busan to explore the picturesque Haedong Yonggung Temple, a 14th-century Buddhist sanctuary perched seaside. Returning to Busan, we delve into the historical significance of the United Nations Memorial Cemetery, a poignant resting place for individuals from numerous nations. Our journey then takes us to the bustling atmosphere of South Korea's largest fish market, located adjacent to Nampo Port, where locals and visitors alike engage with the vibrant maritime trade. After enjoying lunch, we will take a leisurely walk to Yongdusan Park, home to a striking 120-metre-high pagoda, offering sweeping views of the city. Later in the afternoon, we proceed to the port to complete boarding procedures for our onward ferry journey. Final check-in is required by 5:30 p.m. for the ferry scheduled to set sail at 9:00 p.m., as we cross the Sea of Japan to our next destination. We will spend the night onboard in comfortable double cabins with private bathrooms. Please note, if double cabins are in short supply, we may opt for a high-speed ferry departing Busan at 3:00 p.m., arriving in Fukuoka, Japan around 6:30 p.m., with free time to explore Fukuoka followed by hotel accommodation.
Day 7 - Busan - Shimonoseki Ferry - Shimonoseki - Iwakuni - Itsukushima - Hiroshima
We arrive at Shimonoseki Port at 8:00 a.m., where first we'll handle border crossing formalities. Then, we make our way to Iwakuni, a charming town where you’ll witness the iconic Kintai-Kyo Bridge, a historic and picturesque span. Our journey continues with a ferry ride to Miyajima, the island known for its harmonious blend of spiritual and human presence. Here, we explore the famous Itsukushima Shrine, elegantly set partly over water and dedicated to the guardian deity of the seas. There will be ample time to soak in the tranquil atmosphere, wander through the enchanting town, and enjoy lunch at your leisure. Later, we depart for Hiroshima, a city forever marked by the tragic atomic bombing in 1945. Our visit includes a tour of the Peace Memorial, the haunting atomic bomb dome, and the impactful Peace Museum. We conclude the day with an included dinner, reflecting on our newfound insights into Japan's profound history and resilience.
Day 8 - Hiroshima - Matsuyama
Today, we embark on a delightful ferry journey to Shikoku Island, a two-and-a-half-hour trip that offers a unique perspective on Japan's geographical makeup as an archipelago. Our first destination on the island is Matsuyama, where we will ascend by cable car to explore its magnificent castle, renowned for its strategic location and historical significance. Following this, we’ll visit Ishiteji, a beautiful Buddhist temple that is a renowned pilgrimage site, steeped in spiritual tradition. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant, offering a taste of regional cuisine. In the afternoon, we will unwind at Dogo Onsen, one of Japan’s oldest and most revered bathhouses, dating back to the 19th century, where you can experience traditional Japanese bathing culture.
Day 9 - Matsuyama - Kotohira - Takamatsu - Naruto - Kobe
Today, we'll set off for Kotohira, where you'll find a revered Shinto shrine honouring the God of sailors. Nestled on Mount Zosu, this important pilgrimage site is accessed by climbing 785 steps. Our journey continues to Takamatsu, home to Ritsurin Garden, one of Japan's most exquisite landscapes. Here, you'll enjoy lunch at a local establishment.Next, we travel to Naruto to see the remarkable bridge that spans the sea. The bridge features a glass floor, offering a thrilling view of the powerful sea whirlpools from 45 metres above. We'll then embark on a scenic drive across magnificent bridges connecting various islands over the sea, leading us finally to Kobe for your evening accommodation.
Day 10 - Kobe - Osaka - Koyasan (Mount Koya)
In Kobe, we will explore the Earthquake Memorial Museum, a poignant tribute to the 1995 earthquake that devastated the city and its inspiring reconstruction. Our journey continues to Osaka before we make our way to the revered Mount Koya, the heart of Shingon Buddhism in Japan. This spiritual haven, famed for its 120 temples and monasteries, offers a unique pilgrimage experience. We will visit the Okuno Mausoleum, a serene resting place nestled in nature, boasting over 200,000 graves, as well as the historic Kongobuji Temple, dating back to 1593.Tonight, we will immerse ourselves in monastic life at a Buddhist monastery, where monks will guide us in a traditional Zen meditation practice known as Ajikan. Dinner, featuring a vegetarian meal, is included. For those interested, there is also the option to attend the temple's early morning religious ceremony.Please note that on certain dates, the Earthquake Museum visit may be substituted with a visit to the Sake Museum or a trip up Kobe Tower. The monastery stay is a highly valued experience, with simple rooms fitted with tatami mats and shared bathrooms, all reflecting traditional Japanese style. Meditation sessions may not be guaranteed during peak tourist periods. Due to limited accommodation on Mount Koya, there may be occasions when groups are housed in nearby hotels, with half board provided.
Day 11 - Koyasan (Mount Koya) - Kyoto
Our day begins with a traditional Japanese breakfast at the temple, setting the tone for a day full of cultural exploration. We depart early for Kyoto, Japan's capital from 794 to 1868 and a city untouched by the devastation of World War II bombings. This has allowed it to preserve an unparalleled artistic and cultural legacy. Kyoto is also notable for being the location where the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas emissions was signed in 1997.In Kyoto, we'll visit some of the most iconic sites, including the stunning Fushimi Inari Shrine, known for its winding paths lined with thousands of vibrant red torii gates. We'll also explore the historic Imperial Palace, and be enchanted by the Kinkaku-ji Temple, fondly known as the "Golden Pavilion," with its exquisite gardens.You'll have some free time to continue your exploration at your own pace before we regroup to visit Gion. This lively district is steeped in tradition and famed for its Geisha culture. Here, you can immerse yourself in the district’s unique atmosphere, taking in the sights and sounds of this historic area.Should you have already visited Kyoto previously on this tour, our guide will provide recommendations to help you make the most of your day, exploring other parts of the city independently.
Day 12 - Kyoto - Tokyo
Following breakfast, we will arrange your transfer to the station to board the bullet train bound for Tokyo. This high-speed journey, covering nearly 500 kilometres, will be completed in just over two hours. Upon arrival in Tokyo, the day is yours to explore at your own pace and delve into the unique offerings of this bustling metropolis. Whether you choose to peruse the city's cutting-edge districts, discover its serene temples, or sample local culinary delights, the time is yours to enjoy as you wish.
Day 13 - Tokyo
Today, we dive into an enchanting exploration of Tokyo, a city where the vibrant pulse of modernity seamlessly intertwines with tranquil havens of tradition. Our five-hour guided tour will start with a visit to Zojoji Temple, offering a perfect vantage point for capturing the iconic silhouette of Tokyo Tower. The temple grounds are adorned with countless Jizo statues, each lovingly dressed in bright knitwear—a poignant symbol believed to protect children.Our journey transitions to the bustling energy of Shibuya Crossing, renowned as one of the busiest pedestrian intersections in the world. Following this, we’ll find calm at the Meiji Shrine, a dedication to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. As we continue, our bus will glide along the sophisticated Omotesando Avenue, before revealing the picturesque landscapes surrounding Tokyo's Imperial Palace and the scenic Nijubashi Bridge.We further venture through Akihabara, or "Electric Town," a vibrant slice of Tokyo life, famous for its devotion to manga and anime culture. We’ll also pass by the famed Kokugikan, the heart of sumo wrestling in Japan. Our exploration concludes in Asakusa, where we will visit the historic Sensoji Temple and stroll down the bustling Nakamise Street. After enjoying lunch at a local eatery, we return to the hotel.The day isn't over yet, as at 6:30 p.m., we reconvene in the hotel lobby to embark on a metro ride to the effervescent Shinjuku district. Here, amidst its vibrant nightlife, we’ll explore the lively streets before settling down for dinner at a local restaurant. We'll then head back to our hotel by metro, accompanied by our guide, rounding off a day of unforgettable experiences in Tokyo.
Day 14 - Tokyo
Following breakfast, our journey concludes, leaving you with cherished memories of your travels.
