Itinerary
Day 1 - Bilbao
Collect your car upon arrival at Bilbao airport and prepare to explore the city. Although Vitoria is the capital of the Basque Country, Bilbao is the largest Basque city and a vibrant port town. Since the opening of the Guggenheim Museum in 1997, Bilbao has undergone significant renewal, featuring architectural highlights such as the Zubizuri pedestrian bridge by Santiago Calatrava, a subway system designed by Sir Norman Foster, and the Alhóndiga cultural centre, transformed from a former warehouse by designer Philippe Starck. Spend the evening discovering the city’s blend of industrial heritage and modern design. Overnight in Bilbao.
Day 2 - Bilbao - Guernika - San Sebastian - Bilbao
After breakfast, we drive to the historic town of Guernica, known for Picasso’s powerful black and white painting commemorating the tragic bombing during the Spanish Civil War. Later, you can enjoy a stroll along La Concha beach promenade to see Eduardo Chillida’s striking sculpture, El Peine del Viento. For a panoramic view over the city, you may take the funicular (not included) up to the summit of Igueldo hill. We then return to Bilbao for the night.
Day 3 - Bilbao - Santander
After breakfast, we explore Santander, one of the most elegant cities on Spain’s northern coast. The city’s aristocratic charm is evident in its 19th-century architecture, inviting outdoor terraces, and stunning bay—often regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful. You’ll notice the constant presence of both sea and mountains, with several beaches and harbours along the northern shore and a quaint old quarter to wander. Once a favoured resort for Spanish aristocracy and politicians, Santander still boasts grand palaces, promenades, classic white bay-style buildings, historic cafés, and its famous casino. We stay overnight in Santander.
Day 4 - Santander - Santilla Del Mar - Comillas - Santander
After breakfast, we recommend driving to Santillana del Mar, a beautifully preserved medieval town with cobbled streets and a timeless atmosphere. You’ll have some free time to explore at your own pace. Nearby is the Altamira Neocave and Museum, which houses reproductions of some of the world’s oldest known cave paintings, dating from 13,000 to 22,000 years ago (entrance not included). Afterwards, continue to Comillas, a historic town recognised for its charming squares, ancestral houses and striking modernist architecture, including Antoni Gaudí’s remarkable ‘El Capricho’. We then return to Santander for the evening.
Day 5 - Santander - Bilbao
After breakfast, we drive back to Bilbao. Once there, you can explore the old town at your own pace and sample the famous Basque pintxos—small tapas-style snacks—at one of the many lively bars. Overnight in Bilbao.
Day 6 - Bilbao
After breakfast, say goodbye to Bilbao as you return your car at the airport and prepare for your departure flight home.
