Itinerary
Day 1 - Madrid - Cordoba
We depart Madrid by high-speed train around 11:00 – time to be confirmed – reaching Córdoba in under two hours at speeds of up to 300 km/h. Once in the former capital of the Caliphate, we break for lunch before meeting our local guide for a visit to the Mosque–Cathedral (admission included), renowned for its blend of Islamic and Christian art. We then explore the Jewish Quarter, with its narrow lanes and flower-filled patios. You’ll have free time to wander at your own pace before we transfer to the hotel.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Cordoba - Baena - Granada
After breakfast we drive through vast olive groves to Baena, a town with Roman roots renowned for its olive oil. We visit the Núñez de Prado Olive Oil Mill – one of the oldest in the Mediterranean, housed in an 18th century building – to learn about production and sample pan con aceite (bread with olive oil). We then continue to Granada for our guided visit to the Alhambra – admission included – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a masterpiece of Islamic architecture. Lunch is included. The afternoon is free for you to visit the cathedral or wander the Albaicín neighbourhood for views of the Alhambra.
Day 3 - Granada - Nerja - Frigiliana - Malaga
We leave Granada and cross the Sierra Nevada, enjoying striking mountain scenery. We then follow the Mediterranean along the Costa Tropical, where a mild microclimate year round allows the cultivation of tropical fruits such as guava, mango and avocado – and in the past, sugar cane. We stop in Nerja, a coastal town edged by dramatic cliffs, before continuing to Frigiliana, one of Andalusia’s most beautiful villages, with steep streets and whitewashed houses. Our journey continues to Málaga, capital of the Costa del Sol – celebrated for its many museums, as the birthplace of Picasso, and for its unfinished cathedral, La Manquita – the One Armed Lady. You’ll have time for lunch and to explore the city centre, or, if the weather allows, you can head to the beach for a swim.
Day 4 - Malaga - Puerto Banus - Setenil de las bodegas - Ronda - Jerez de la frontera
From Málaga we travel into the Andalusian mountains and through the White Villages, beginning with a visit to Puerto Banús in Marbella – a glamorous marina known for its yachts and luxury boutiques. We continue to Setenil de las Bodegas to see its striking houses built into the rock, then on to Ronda, dramatically set above the Tajo Gorge. A typical lunch is included, after which you’ll have free time to wander the historic streets before we visit the bullring – one of the oldest and most monumental in Spain – with entrance included. We finish the day in Jerez de la Frontera, where you’ll have time to explore the historic centre and, if you wish, sample tapas in the traditional tabancos.
Day 5 - Jerez de la frontera - El Puerto de Santa Maria - Cadiz - Seville
We begin the day in Jerez de la Frontera, in the heart of Andalusia, celebrated for its wine heritage, equestrian culture and flamenco. After breakfast, we visit the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art – tickets included – to explore the Carriage Museum and watch the training of Andalusian horses. Before leaving Jerez, we pause for a brief photo stop at the exterior of the Moorish Alcázar. We then continue to El Puerto de Santa María, a coastal town known for fine wines and seafood, where we visit the Osborne wineries – tickets and tasting included. After some free time to enjoy the surroundings, we board a boat to Cádiz for a scenic journey of approximately 30 minutes. In this city – one of the oldest in Europe – you have free time to explore its impressive cathedral and charming old town. Later in the afternoon, we cross the bridge towards Seville, arriving by the end of the day.
Day 6 - Seville
After breakfast we leave Seville for Italica – entrance and guided visit with a local guide included – birthplace of the emperors Trajan and Hadrian. We explore the vast amphitheatre, which once held around 25,000 spectators, along with its baths and mosaics. We then continue to Palos de la Frontera, the port from which Columbus’s ships set sail in 1492, to visit the Monastery of La Rábida and the Wharf of the Caravels – entrance included – to see the replica vessels. You’ll have free time for lunch in Huelva.In the afternoon we follow the Atlantic coast near Doñana National Park, known for its biodiversity, and stop in El Rocío to visit the sanctuary and take in views towards Doñana. We return to Seville in the late afternoon.
Day 7 - Seville - Zaragoza
This morning we take a panoramic tour of Seville, visiting the cathedral and its famous Giralda, the banks of the Guadalquivir, and the characterful neighbourhoods of Santa Cruz and Triana. After the tour, we include a boat trip on the Guadalquivir for a different perspective of the city. In the afternoon we transfer you to the station to board the high speed train to Zaragoza – scheduled to depart around 4:30 pm – covering the 850 km in just under four hours. On arrival in Zaragoza, we transfer you to your hotel. The train journey is unescorted.
Day 8 - Zaragoza - Poblet - Barcelona
We begin with a morning panoramic tour of Zaragoza led by a local expert, taking in the Cathedral–Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar. We also explore works by Goya, then continue to the Roman theatre and a Renaissance palace, before a stroll by the Aljafería Palace. After lunch, we travel into Catalonia to visit Poblet Abbey – a striking walled monastery and one of the best preserved medieval monasteries in the world – with tickets included. We then continue to Barcelona, arriving in the evening.
Day 9 - Barcelona
In the morning, we take a panoramic tour of Barcelona – open to the Mediterranean and renowned for Gaudí and its modernist architecture, its lively Ramblas, and the legacies of the World Expositions and the Olympic Games. The tour ends at Maremagnum, a waterfront leisure and dining complex beside Columbus Square, where you can stroll and enjoy the area. The afternoon is at leisure for you to explore independently. We return to the hotel at the end of the day.
Day 10 - Barcelona - Peniscola - Valencia - Madrid
We travel south along the Mediterranean, pausing in Peniscola – a walled seaside town – with time for a stroll. We then continue to Valencia, arriving around lunchtime – you could try the famous paella. At about 4.30 pm we continue towards Madrid, making a brief stop at Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences. We expect to reach Madrid between 8.30 and 9.00 pm. Depending on group size, the Valencia–Madrid sector may be by high speed train. Our journey ends on arrival in Madrid – please check your flight time as you may need an extra night.
