A unique spot in the foothills of the Himalayas, Shimla is a quaint city with a British feel. Declared the summer capital of British India, today the city is the capital city of the Himachal Pradesh. The city has very clear colonial influences with many of its building being made in the Tudorbethan and Neo-Gothic architectural styles. It's a particularly scenic spot and its popularity as a summer resort continues today with cooler temperatures and ample outdoor activities on offer. It's even pretty in the winter when pristine white snow blankets the streets and conifer trees and the numerous ski resorts within close proximity to Shimla open their doors.
One of the most novel and enjoyable ways of getting to Shimla is on the toy train service that operates from the town of Kalka. Hauled along by a tiny diesel locomotive, the leisurely journey through stunning mountain scenery and surrounding villages takes between 5-7 hours and is a highlight for many visitors.
We offer multiple tours to Shimla, explore the pretty gardens and marvel at the European architecture right in the heart of northern India. Take a ride on the toy train, explore the museum and learn the history of Shimla. There is no shortage of things to do from exploring the bazaars, visiting one of the ski resorts near by and taking in the sights of Shimla.
Shimla is comprised of just two roads with the higher road running east to west and known as the Mall. It has the most British feel of the two roads, with stately English-looking homes and the Victorian-Gothic spire of Christ Church, which was built in 1846 and is the most recognisable of Shimla's landmarks. The highest point of town is Scandal Point, the unofficial centre of town, and further on is the State Museum, which boasts an interesting collection from Himachal. Beyond here is the Vice Regal Lodge and Botanic Gardens. The Vice Regal Lodge, Shimla’s most impressive colonial building, was where many important decisions affecting the destiny of the subcontinent were made.
A beautiful old building that was once home to the British Viceroy in India. This is someone who was appointed by the Monarchy to act as a representative for the monarch. The first Viceroy was appointed in 1773, the position was abolished in 1950 and today the building is used as a museum where you can peruse the different rooms and historic photos dating back to Britain’s occupation of India. The building is beautiful and well worth a visit when you are in Shimla.
Dedicated to the Hindu deity Hanuman the half monkey half man God. The temple is a vibrant red colour and is most famous for its huge statue of Hunuman. The statue can be seen above the trees from all points of Shimla. At 108 feet tall the statue is even taller than Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer, when visiting the temple, you get to see the true grandeur of the statue. Connect with spirituality and nature when visiting the temple and relax in the serene quite of the hilltop worship site.
Constructed during British colonial rule, Mall Road is one of two main streets that run though Shimla. A lively hangout spot Mall Road is where you can find many restaurants, cafes and shops. It is a great place to spend a day with friends and relax and pick up some souvenirs, with many shops selling everything from homemade jewellery to branded clothes. Mall Road is also where you can find the town hall, Gaiety Theatre and Kali Bari Temple.
Must-visit attractions include The Ridge, Mall Road, Jakhoo Temple, Christ Church, Shimla State Museum, and Kufri. Don't miss a walk through the pine forests and a visit to the Indian Institute of Advanced Study.
Try local Himachali dishes such as Chana Madra, Dham, Siddu, and Babru. You can also enjoy North Indian and Tibetan cuisine in various cafes and restaurants around Mall Road.
The best places for shopping are Mall Road, Lakkar Bazaar, and Tibetan Market. Popular items include woolen clothes, handicrafts, wooden items, and local jewellery.
The best time to visit Shimla is during the summer months from March to June when the weather is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing. However, if you enjoy snow and winter sports, visiting between December and February is perfect.
