Day 1 - Sofia
Welcome to Sofia! Upon your arrival at the airport, we will arrange for your transfer to the hotel, where you'll receive all the necessary details about the upcoming tour. At around 3:00 p.m., we'll embark on a guided exploration of Bulgaria's vibrant capital, Sofia. This city tour will introduce you to renowned landmarks including the majestic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the evocative Russian Church, the historic Mosque, and the city’s distinctive squares and avenues characterised by Stalinist architecture. After the tour, the remainder of the day is yours to enjoy Sofia at your own pace, offering you the opportunity to delve deeper into the local culture or simply relax and soak in the ambiance. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Sofia - Bachkovo - Plovdiv
On our second day, we will set off in the morning for Bachkovo Monastery, a site of great historical significance as Bulgaria's second largest monastery, founded in the 11th century. The serene setting, encompassing its three churches, offers a peaceful ambience ideal for reflection. From there, we will continue to Plovdiv, where lunch will be provided as part of our itinerary. Plovdiv, one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities, is a treasure trove of history. Our tour includes access to the remarkable Roman Amphitheatre, a testament to the city's ancient past, along with visits to the intriguing Old Pharmacy and the culturally rich Armenian House.
Day 3 - Plovdiv - Kazanlak - Shipka - Etar - Arbanasi - Veliko Tarnovo
On the third day of our journey, we'll traverse the picturesque landscapes of the Balkan Mountains. Our first stop is Kazanlak, located in the enchanting Rose Valley. Here, entry to the replica of the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak—recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site—is included. You'll also have the opportunity to learn about the region's renowned rose production. Continuing through the mountains, we'll pause at the Shipka Memorial Church, a notable tribute to those who fought in the Russo-Turkish War. Our exploration leads us to Etar, a captivating village and open-air ethnographic museum providing insight into Bulgaria's cultural heritage. After an included lunch, we will head to Arbanasi, celebrated for its fortress-like houses and rich trading history, where we'll visit the Nativity Church, with entry covered. The day culminates in Veliko Tarnovo, former capital of Bulgaria, famous for its medieval centre that offers stunning views of the adjacent canyon. Please be aware that in some instances, the visit to Arbanasi might occur on Sunday morning.
Day 4 - Veliko Tarnovo - Basarbovo - Bucharest
On our fourth day, we set off towards Romania, pausing en route to explore the enchanting Basarbovski Monastery, a remarkable site carved into the rock, renowned as a place of pilgrimage. Continuing our journey, we cross the border and the majestic Danube River, arriving in Bucharest around midday. The afternoon will be dedicated to a panoramic tour of the Romanian capital, where we will delve into its historic heart and marvel at the grandeur of the Palace of Parliament. Following this, you will have free time to discover more of the city at your own pace. Dinner is included this evening, allowing you to savour Romanian cuisine.
Day 5 - Bucharest - Sinaia - Bran - Sighisoara
Our adventure today takes us into the heart of Transylvania, showcasing the breathtaking scenery of the Carpathian Mountains and lush forests along our route. Our first stop is Sinaia, where we will enjoy a leisurely walk through the enchanting gardens surrounding the Peles and Pelisor Castles. Next, we visit the legendary 14th-century Bran Fortress, often associated with Dracula's myth—admission is included for this intriguing glimpse into history. Following a break for lunch, we journey onwards to Sighisoara, a picturesque medieval city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As the day draws to a close, we'll indulge in a special dinner at Count Dracula’s restaurant, famously located in the very house where Vlad the Impaler was born.
Day 6 - Sighisoara - Biertan - Sibiu - Hunedoara - Timisoara
In the heart of Transylvania, we’ll explore the region’s rich German heritage with a visit to one of Biertan's fortified churches, a testament to its historic significance and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – tickets are included. Following this, we'll make our way to Sibiu, a significant cultural and economic hub that once held the esteemed position of Transylvania's capital. You'll have time to wander its quaint streets and squares, and savour a delightful lunch. During the afternoon, we'll visit the magnificent Hunedoara Castle, known as Romania's most beautiful castle, before heading to Timisoara. In this vibrant city, you'll have the opportunity to discover its charming central squares at your own pace.
Day 7 - Timisoara - Belgrade
Today, we travel to Serbia, a journey of approximately three hours across the border to Belgrade. This vibrant city, set at the meeting point of the Danube and Sava rivers, will be the backdrop for our panoramic exploration. We'll delve into its lively centre, passing by the parliament and taking in the sights of the historic Kalemegdan Fortress. Our visit includes the Museum of Yugoslavia, where Tito's Mausoleum is a notable feature. In the afternoon, you’ll have the freedom to discover Belgrade at your own pace.
Day 8 - Belgrade
Following breakfast, our tour concludes in Belgrade, where we part ways, enriched with lasting memories of our journey through captivating landscapes and historic cities.
