Itinerary
Day 1 - Glacier Hike & Waterfalls
We leave Reykjavik for a scenic drive along the south coast to Solheimajökull Glacier, passing rugged lava fields, rolling hills and glimpses of waterfalls. En route we stop at the black sands of Reynisfjara to see the dramatic basalt sea stacks and the roaring Atlantic surf.
At the glacier car park we kit you out with crampons, a harness and a helmet with a head torch - hiking boots are available to hire. We then take a 30-minute walk on flat, slightly rocky ground to the ice, setting a comfortable pace so you can enjoy the surroundings.
Stepping onto Solheimajökull, we secure our crampons and follow the guide across the glacier towards striking ice features, including moulins - deep glacial shafts carved by meltwater. Walking on the ice is a distinctive experience that quickly becomes second nature. You can choose to upgrade to a private ice-climbing experience. After coming off the glacier, we continue to Skogarfoss and Seljalandsfoss before travelling to Landhotel for an overnight stay under the midnight sun at a comfortable four-star hotel.
Day 2 - Return to Reykjavik
We set off beneath the slopes of Hekla and drive through Þjorsardalur Valley - a route of shifting scenery, from broad lowlands to rugged volcanic views.
At Þjoðveldisbaerinn Commonwealth Farm, we step into a faithfully reconstructed Viking-Age homestead with a small conversion church. We meet reenactors who share insights into everyday life, crafts and customs - an evocative window into early Icelandic society often linked to the “Pompeii of the North”.
We continue to a trio of quieter waterfalls, taking in the power of Haifoss, the twin-pooled beauty of Hjalparfoss and the cascades at Glanni. Each stop offers time to admire the falls and the surrounding geology.
After exploring, we sit down to a traditional Viking BBQ. Back in Reykjavik, we conclude the day with an introduction to Old Icelandic Books - a rare chance to handle historic manuscripts and learn about the country's literary heritage. This is a full-day journey weaving together landscape, history and culture.
