Day 1 - Tokyo
Welcome to Japan! Upon arrival in Tokyo, you'll be smoothly transferred to your hotel via a shared shuttle bus after completing the necessary customs procedures. The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy at your leisure, allowing you the perfect opportunity to unwind and perhaps explore the vibrant city on your own. In the afternoon, we will provide you with all the essential details regarding the commencement of your tour. Enjoy your evening in this fascinating metropolis known for its seamless blend of cutting-edge technology and rich tradition. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Tokyo
On the second day of our journey, we immerse ourselves in the wonders of Tokyo with a comprehensive guided tour that lasts around five hours. This vibrant metropolis offers a captivating blend of modern energy and peaceful retreats. We begin our exploration with a brief visit to Zojoji Temple, where you can capture a classic view of the Tokyo Tower framed by the temple’s serene grounds, adorned with numerous Jizo statues—symbols of protection for children. Our journey then takes us to the renowned Shibuya Crossing, known as one of the busiest intersections globally, and onwards to the Meiji Shrine, dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Continuing by bus along the elegant Omotesando Avenue, we catch glimpses of Tokyo's sleek architecture. At the Imperial Palace, we admire the picturesque gardens and the iconic Nijubashi Bridge — a perfect spot for photographs. As the tour unfolds, we drive through Akihabara, famously dubbed the "Electric Town" and a haven for manga and anime enthusiasts, before passing by the celebrated Kokugikan Sumo Arena. We conclude our tour in Asakusa, exploring the historic Sensoji Temple and bustling Nakamise Street, where lunch will be enjoyed at a local restaurant. After a break at the hotel, we reconvene at 6:30 p.m. for an evening adventure. We’ll take the metro to the lively Shinjuku district—tickets are provided—where we bask in the electrifying atmosphere before sharing dinner at a local eatery. Finally, we return to the hotel by metro, accompanied by our guide.
Day 3 - Tokyo - Hiroshima
After a hearty breakfast, we'll transfer to the station to embark on an exhilarating journey aboard Japan's famed bullet train, whisking us approximately 800 kilometres to Hiroshima in about four hours. Upon arrival, we'll delve into the city's poignant history, forever changed by the atomic bomb in 1945. Our exploration will take us through the serene Peace Memorial Park, the hauntingly preserved Atomic Bomb Dome, and the Peace Memorial Museum, offering a solemn testament to the resilience and restoration that followed. We will then board a ferry to a mystical island renowned as a place where gods and men coexist. Here, you can wander through its charming centre, and explore the enchanting Itsukushima Shrine, spectacularly built over the sea. After some free time for lunch, we'll return to Hiroshima for the evening, where dinner will be provided. Please note that the order of our visits in Hiroshima may vary, but rest assured, you will experience all planned activities.
Day 4 - Hiroshima - Matsuyama
On day four, we journey by ferry to Shikoku, immersing ourselves in the captivating landscape of Japan's numerous islands during the two-and-a-half-hour crossing. Upon reaching Matsuyama, we ascend by cable car to its commanding castle, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Our exploration continues at Ishiteji Temple, a revered site within the Buddhist pilgrimage circuit. Lunch is included at a local eatery, providing a taste of the region's flavours. In the later afternoon, we have arranged a visit to Dogo Onsen, celebrated for its historic bathhouse dating back to the 19th century, where you can indulge in a traditional Japanese bathing experience.
Day 5 - Matsuyama - Kotohira - Takamatsu - Naruto - Kobe
Today, we will journey to Kotohira, where we will visit an esteemed Shinto shrine dedicated to the God of sailors. An important pilgrimage site, it is nestled on Mount Zosu and requires an invigorating climb up 785 steps. Afterward, we will make our way to Takamatsu to explore Ritsurin Garden, renowned as one of Japan's most exquisite gardens. Following a delightful lunch at a local restaurant, we'll proceed to Naruto. Here, we will marvel at an impressive bridge that connects the islands, boasting a remarkable glass floor offering a unique view. From 45 metres above, you will have the chance to observe the powerful sea whirlpools swirling below. Our scenic drive will then meander across striking bridges that span the sea, offering captivating views. The day's journey will conclude in Kobe, where we will settle into our accommodation for the evening.
Day 6 - Kobe - Osaka - Koyasan (Mount Koya)
Today, our adventure takes us to Kobe, where we will explore the Earthquake Memorial Museum. This museum commemorates the catastrophic earthquake of 1995 and the city's remarkable recovery, offering insights into the resilience of its people. Following our visit, we continue our journey to Osaka and then onto Mount Koya, a revered centre for Shingon Buddhism in Japan and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This spiritual destination is home to numerous temples and monasteries, where we'll visit the Okuno Mausoleum, a captivating and tranquil cemetery set amidst nature, housing over 200,000 graves. We'll also explore the historic Kongobuji Temple, which dates back to 1593. This evening, we’ll have the unique experience of staying in a Buddhist monastery. Here, you'll have the opportunity to partake in Zen meditation led by the monks, followed by a traditional vegetarian dinner. If you're an early riser and wish to deepen your spiritual journey, you may attend the morning religious ceremony before breakfast. Please note that accommodation in the monastery consists of simple, traditional Japanese-style rooms with shared bathrooms. On occasions when the monastery cannot accommodate our group, we may stay in nearby hotels with half board included. Additionally, during peak visitor periods, meditation practice might not be guaranteed.
Day 7 - Koyasan (Mount Koya) - Kyoto
After an early traditional Japanese breakfast at the temple, we will depart for Kyoto, a city that served as Japan's capital from 794 to 1868 and the former home of the Imperial Court. Remarkably untouched by WWII bombings, Kyoto remains rich in artistic and cultural heritage. The city is also notable for the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement on climate change adopted here in 1997. During our visit, we will explore some of Kyoto's most celebrated sites. Marvel at the magnificent Fushimi Inari Shrine, with its iconic red torii gates, then proceed to the historic Imperial Palace. We will also visit the Kinkaku-ji, or Golden Pavilion, an exquisite Zen temple surrounded by beautiful gardens. You’ll have free time to further explore before we head to Gion, a lively traditional district renowned for its Geisha culture, where you’ll have additional time to immerse yourself in its unique atmosphere. If you have visited Kyoto previously during your tour, our guide will happily offer suggestions for other areas to explore on your own.
Day 8 - Kyoto - Eihei-ji - Katsuyama-dinosaur museum - Katsuyama - Kanazawa
Following a hearty breakfast, we set off alongside one of Japan's largest lakes, with our first destination being the tranquil Shirahige Ginra shrine on its scenic shores. Next, we journey to Eihei-ji, a revered temple and monastery established in 1244, which remains a vibrant centre of Zen Buddhism. Its serene surroundings and exquisite architecture provide an ideal atmosphere for the monks who engage in Zazen meditation and adhere to a disciplined lifestyle.We then travel to Katsuyama, where you can indulge your curiosity at the Dinosaur Museum, located at Japan's largest dinosaur fossil site. You'll have free time to explore the museum's intriguing displays of over 40 dinosaur skeletons and grab some lunch. Our day continues with visits to the monumental Great Buddha of Echizen and its neighbouring temple. We can also climb the nearby five-storey pagoda for breathtaking panoramic views. By evening, we will have arrived in Kanazawa, ready for another exciting day ahead.
Day 9 - Kanazawa
Today, we will dedicate a full day to exploring the charming city of Kanazawa, a cultural gem that survived the World War II bombings unharmed. Our morning begins with a guided tour, showcasing the city's rich history and architecture. We’ll first explore the castle area, renowned for its impressive stone walls and traditional architecture.Next, we’ll wander through the Nagamachi district, a historical neighbourhood that once housed samurai and their families. Here, you’ll glimpse into the past, as the area retains an authentic atmosphere with its preserved residences, earthen walls, private gates, narrow alleyways, and serene water canals. As part of our exploration, admission to Kenrokuen garden is included. Known as one of Japan’s most beautiful gardens, Kenrokuen offers stunning landscapes with its perfectly manicured grounds, designed to be enjoyed year-round.Following our guided tour, we’ll finish the morning at the vibrant Omicho Market, where a variety of stalls offer delicious local cuisine, perfect for lunch or a light bite. The afternoon is free for you to continue your discovery of Kanazawa at your own pace, allowing you to delve deeper into the city’s unique boutiques, museums, and cultural sites.
Day 10 - Kanazawa - Ainokura - Shirakawa - Hida village - Takayama
Today, we embark on a journey through the picturesque landscapes and historic villages of the Gokayama and Shirakawago regions, both recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These areas are renowned for their traditional gassho-zukuri houses, characterised by steeply pitched roofs resembling monks' hands joined in prayer – an architectural design that enables them to endure the heavy snowfall of winter.Our first stop is Ainokura, a quaint village where you'll have the opportunity to explore and enjoy the serene beauty of its surroundings. We then continue to the larger village of Shirakawa-go Ogimachi, known for its remarkable collection of centuries-old homes. Here, you'll have time to wander the village and savour a local lunch.After this exploration, we proceed to Takayama to visit the Hida Folk Village Museum, an open-air exhibition showcasing more than 30 traditional houses from the Edo Period, all relocated from various sites across Japan. The museum offers a glimpse into the past, with exhibits displaying the tools and utensils once used in daily life.The day concludes with free time to explore Takayama’s well-preserved old town, where wooden buildings and traditional shops create a charming atmosphere.
Day 11 - Takayama - Hida furukawa - Matsumoto - Nagano
Following breakfast, we'll head to Hida Furukawa, where you'll enjoy a leisurely walk through its quaint old town. The town is renowned for its distinctive festival, which UNESCO has recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, celebrated with large drums and intricately decorated floats. We'll include access to the museum, displaying these festival floats, attire, and drums. The journey then takes us across the awe-inspiring Japanese Alps, known for their snow-capped splendour for much of the year. Upon arriving in Matsumoto, we'll visit the striking Crow Castle, a 16th-century fortress famed for its distinctive black façade. Thereafter, you can savour some free time to enjoy lunch and wander through the charming town. Later, we'll proceed to Nagano for your overnight stay.
Day 12 - Nagano - Monkey Park - Kusatsu - Ikaho
In Nagano, we'll begin our day with a visit to Zenko-ji, a revered pilgrimage site that houses Japan's first Buddhist image. Here, you'll experience the Gomakuyo ceremony, which is believed to bestow blessings and good fortune. Our journey then takes us deep into the stunning Japanese Alps, where we venture into the Jigokudani Monkey Park. Enjoy lunch and a tranquil walk through scenic forests, rivers, and hot springs where Japanese macaques famously bathe.Our adventure continues as we climb to breathtaking altitudes of 2,172 metres, passing semi-active volcanoes before arriving in the charming spa town of Kusatsu. We'll take a leisurely walk through the city park, known for its open-air onsen (hot springs), before heading to the picturesque town of Ikaho. Here, you'll explore its historic centre, renowned for its unique stair-stepped streets.This evening, we'll relax in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. You'll have the opportunity to enjoy its baths, followed by a traditional Japanese dinner included in your stay. Please note that during autumn, the availability of monkeys in Jigokudani may vary due to the mountains' fruit harvest, potentially affecting park openings. Additionally, weather conditions from November to April may impact our visit to Kusatsu.
Day 13 - Ikaho - Nikko - Sendai
Today, we continue our exploration of Japan by heading to Nikko, a town renowned for its rich cultural heritage. Our visit will include the extraordinary Nikko-Toshogu Temple, famous for a room with acoustics that create the 'sound of a dragon'. We will also admire the peaceful Taiyuinbyo Mausoleum, which exudes an aura of tranquillity. After this, you'll have the chance to wander along the beautiful Kanmangafuchi Abyss, where a line of Jizo statues silently keeps watch beside the river.The afternoon offers free time for you to explore the charming centre of Nikko at your own pace. Later, we will travel to Sendai, a vibrant city with a population exceeding one million. Here, you'll have the opportunity to discover its lively streets and experience the dynamic atmosphere as you enjoy dinner in the bustling city centre.
Day 14 - Sendai - Matsushima - Hiraizumi - Morioka
Today, we embark on a journey to the splendid city of Matsushima, set along the picturesque "Thousand Islands" Bay in the Pacific Ocean. Known for its ethereal beauty, Matsushima is one of Japan's most stunning destinations. Upon our arrival, we will visit an exquisite tea house with breathtaking sea views, where we will enjoy a traditional cup of tea as our guide sheds light on intriguing aspects of the city. This sets the stage for an enriching day.Next, we will delight in a 50-minute cruise, enjoying lunch on board as we take in the captivating scenery. Our exploration then takes us to Hiraizumi, a place of deep historical and spiritual significance. We'll visit the UNESCO-listed Takkoku no Iwaya, a temple skilfully carved into the rock in 801. Continuing our tour, we will explore the remarkable Buddhist temples of Chusonji and find a serene moment amidst the gardens of Motsuji Temple. Here, you may participate in a Zen ceremony—a unique cultural experience with admission included.As the day winds down, we will make our way to Morioka, the charming capital of Iwate Province. Upon arrival, you'll have ample time to unwind and explore at your leisure in this delightful city before settling in for the evening.
Day 15 - Morioka - Hirosaki - Aomori - Hakodate
Today, we journey through breathtaking landscapes to Hirosaki, renowned for its historic castle enveloped by a stunning park that transforms with the arrival of spring. Here, you can witness the spectacular sight of more than 2,500 cherry trees in full bloom. As we continue to Aomori, the provincial capital nestled on Mutsu Bay, we will explore the Nebuta Museum. This museum offers insight into Japan’s lively festival traditions, reminiscent of carnival celebrations with their magnificent, vividly painted, and illuminated floats. Lunch awaits us at a local restaurant. Our day continues as we board a ferry for a scenic journey of just over three and a half hours, crossing to the island of Hokkaido. Once we arrive in Hakodate, we will immerse ourselves in its intriguing historic district, where you can admire the city’s diverse cultural influences, including the striking Russian Orthodox Church and other Christian edifices.
Day 16 - Hakodate - Onuma - Noboribetsu - Sapporo
As the day begins in Hakodate, we'll immerse ourselves in the local culture with a visit to the vibrant fish market, witnessing the bustling atmosphere and a dazzling array of fresh seafood. We'll ascend Goryokaku Tower for stunning panoramic views and a closer look at the star-shaped design of the historic fortress. Afterward, take some time to explore the castle area at your own pace before our journey continues to Onuma. Surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery and scattered with small islands, you may choose to enjoy a boat ride or a leisurely walk along scenic trails. A delightful lunch at a local restaurant is included.In the afternoon, we'll travel along the picturesque coastline towards Noboribetsu, notable for its dramatic volcanic landscape. We'll venture through the steam-laden vents of Jigokudani, aptly named 'Hell Valley', explore the misty beauty of Lake Oyunuma, and follow a tranquil trail along a hot spring river, where a soothing foot bath awaits. Day 17 - Sapporo
Our day in Sapporo begins with a city tour, where we'll visit the iconic Clock Tower and stroll along Odori Koen, a beautiful park-lined avenue dominated by the Sapporo TV Tower. We'll also explore the Hokkaido Jingu Shinto shrine and take part in a Kito, a traditional prayer ceremony, offering us a moment to express gratitude for our journey. Leaving the city behind, we'll venture to the outskirts to see the striking Hill of Buddha, a stunning example of avant-garde architecture inaugurated in 2015. This lavender-covered hilltop is home to an impressive Buddha statue, and also houses replicas of the famous Moai statues from Easter Island. Our travels then take us to Otaru, a charming town with a European flair, featuring lively shopping streets, a historic canal, and quaint museums. We'll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before returning to Sapporo around 3:30 p.m. The remainder of the afternoon is free for you to discover the city at your own pace.
Day 18 - Sapporo - Toyako Onsen - Mount Usu - Tomakomai - Sendai Ferry
We'll begin our day with a visit to Pirko Kotan, an indigenous Ainu village museum. Here, you'll gain insights into the rich culture and history of the Ainu people, who lived on this island long before it was settled by the Japanese. As we travel through the breathtaking landscapes of Hokkaido's interior, you'll marvel at the tranquil lakes and majestic mountains that unfold before us. We'll arrive in the picturesque spa town of Toyako, nestled at the foot of a striking volcano on the shores of a stunning lake formed within an ancient crater. You’ll have free time to enjoy a peaceful walk along the lakeshore and soak in the spectacular views.We'll continue our journey with a visit to the Volcanology Museum, where you'll learn about the region's historical volcanic eruptions. Afterwards, a cable car will take us to the summit of Mount Usu. Here, you'll have the opportunity to explore the volcanic crater and admire the dramatic scenery. Lunch will be provided before we set out for Tomakomai, where we'll board a modern ferry for an overnight journey across the Pacific Ocean. You'll enjoy dinner on board and be accommodated in comfortable double cabins with private bathrooms for a restful night's sleep as we sail through the night.
Day 19 - Tomakomai - Sendai Ferry - Sendai - Yama-dera - Aizuwakamatsu
Upon our arrival at Sendai Port around 10:00 a.m., we'll make our way to Yamadera, a breathtaking temple complex nestled in the mountains, surrounded by towering trees. This sacred site, founded over a thousand years ago, exudes a magical atmosphere that invites exploration and reflection. During our visit, lunch will be included, providing a chance to savour local flavours amidst our serene surroundings. Following our time at Yamadera, we'll proceed to Yonezawa, renowned for its sake production. Here, we'll delve into the art of sake-making with a visit to the Sake Museum, which features a small distillery, offering insights into this traditional Japanese craft. Our day continues through captivating landscapes as we journey to Aizuwakamatsu, where we will settle in for an overnight stay, ready to absorb more of Japan's rich heritage and natural beauty.
Day 20 - Aizuwakamatsu - Ouchi-juku - Tokyo
Today, we'll dive into the rich history of Aizuwakamatsu by exploring a Samurai Mansion, where you’ll discover the fascinating lifestyle of legendary samurai warriors. We'll then enjoy a leisurely walk through the castle garden, providing a distant view of the castle with its distinctive red-tiled roof. Our next stop is Iimoriyama, where you'll encounter sculptures gifted by Mussolini and learn the poignant tales of the city's young martyrs.Our journey continues to the charming village of Ouchi-juku, famous for its traditional thatched-roof houses that evoke a bygone era. Here, we’ll pause for lunch, allowing you to soak in the village's unique atmosphere.
