New Year's Eve in the Fjords

Once you have arrived in Bergen, make your own way to your accommodation to begin this New Year's tour through Norway's fjords, famed the world over for their beauty.

The rest of the day is free to spend at leisure.

If you have time before or after, Bergen's Magic Ice Bar is also worth a visit - an entire space built from ice, where a poncho, gloves and a welcome drink served in an ice glass are all part of the experience, available at an additional cost.

This morning is yours to spend exploring Bergen at your own pace. Wander the Hanseatic wharf of Bryggen, home to St Mary's Church and the Hakon fortress, and stop by the city's well-known fish market. A ride on the Floibanen Funicular is also worth building in, climbing to the top of Mount Floyen for sweeping views across the city.

Other landmarks worth seeking out include Rosenkrantz Tower, the Norwegian Fisheries Museum, Horda Museum and Fantoft Stave Church.

Alternatively, you can join a local guide and small group on a food and culture walk at an additional cost, taking in the UNESCO-listed Bryggen district, a restaurant that was once a public bathhouse, and the oldest working basement still in use in Norway, where a small beer comes with a story - between the tastings along the way, the food is enough to count as lunch.

Bergen - Gudvangen - Sognefjord - Flam - Myrdal - Voss. Today, it's a short walk to Bergen railway station to catch a train to Voss, known nationally as something of a hub for winter sport. A connecting shuttle bus then continues to Gudvangen, through snow-covered mountains and ever-changing scenery, where there's free time on arrival for lunch.

From here, a cruise continues the journey along the Sognefjord - the King of Norway and the country's longest fjord. Its final stretch, the Aurlandsfjord, is a 17-kilometre arm of this 204-kilometre giant, the world's second-longest fjord, and ranks among the most picturesque anywhere.

At Flam, board the celebrated Flamsbana - one of the steepest railways in the world - climbing past the Rallar Road, through towering peaks and dramatic waterfalls, and through no fewer than 20 tunnels. So many viewpoints line the route that it can feel like crossing between mountain and fjord more than once, with an audio guide running throughout. At Myrdal, change onto a train back to Voss.

On arrival, check in to your accommodation and get ready for a festive evening, seeing out the last hours of the year in historic surroundings. A four-course gala dinner awaits, complete with an aperitif, fireworks, late-night snacks, dancing and music.

You will enjoy the start of the year exploring Voss at your own pace. Winter here has plenty on offer, whether that means hitting the slopes or simply taking in the frozen scenery, and the area also has a good range of cross-country and hiking trails. For sweeping views over the valley, the Voss Gondol cable car climbs to the top of Mount Hanguren.

A three-course dinner is included this evening back at your accommodation.

Voss - Oslo. This morning, a train departs for the final stop of the journey, Oslo, Norway's capital. The ride takes around seven hours, running along the famous Bergen Railway - considered one of the best train journeys in the world - and crossing Hardangervidda, Europe's highest mountain plateau, with sweeping views over mountains, valleys and countryside along the way. On arrival, make your own way to your accommodation, with the rest of the day free to spend as you wish.

You can spend today discovering Oslo at your own pace, or join an optional Panorama Tour for an additional cost. This three hour coach tour with a certified local guide takes in the city's main attractions before heading to Holmenkollen Hill and its ski jump (entry to the tower itself isn't included), followed by a guided walk of around 45 minutes through Vigeland Sculpture Park, home to over 200 works in bronze and granite by Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland.

If exploring independently, spend the day wandering the city, browsing shops or stopping for lunch wherever takes your fancy, with worthwhile sights including Akershus Castle, Oslo City Hall, the Fram Museum, the Kon-Tiki Museum, the Munch Museum, the National History Museum and the Nobel Peace Center, among others.

After your final breakfast, you might have some time for last-minute souvenir shopping, including Viking-themed gifts, before making your own way to the airport for departure.
