Set off in Barcelona and wind up in Lisbon on this 17 day adventure – a sunny sweep from Catalonia and the Valencia coast to Madrid and Andalusia, then by ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar into Morocco. You’ll explore Gaudí’s Barcelona, seaside Peñíscola and futuristic Valencia; stroll Madrid’s grand boulevards with a peek inside the Bernabéu; and visit Granada with the Alhambra option. In Morocco, expect Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech – souks, palaces and Atlas panoramas – plus Aït Benhaddou, Todgha Gorge and Sahara sunsets. Itinerary
Day 1 - Barcelona
Welcome to Barcelona – we arrange your transfer to the hotel and you have free time to settle in. You will receive practical information in the afternoon, either in person or via the information board at reception.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Barcelona
In the morning we include a panoramic tour of Barcelona, a Mediterranean city celebrated for Gaudí’s modernism, its lively Ramblas and the legacies of its World Expositions and Olympic Games. The tour ends at Maremagnum by the sea next to Columbus Square, where you can stroll through this vibrant area. You have the afternoon at leisure, and we return to the hotel at day’s end.
Day 3 - Barcelona - Peniscola - Valencia - Madrid
We travel south along the Mediterranean, pausing in Peñíscola – a charming walled town by the sea – with time for a stroll. We then continue to Valencia, a lively port city on the Levantine coast, arriving around lunchtime – you might try its famous paella. At about 16:30 we continue to Madrid after a brief stop at the avant‑garde City of Arts and Sciences. We arrive in Madrid between 20:30 and 21:00 and, as a welcome, we include a transfer to Plaza Mayor – perfect for pinchos and a glass of wine. Note: depending on the number of passengers, the journey from Valencia to Madrid may be by high‑speed train.
Day 4 - Madrid
The morning begins with a comprehensive tour of central Madrid – Paseo del Prado, Cibeles, Neptuno, Puerta de Alcalá, Plaza de Colón and Plaza Mayor. We then visit Retiro Park to see the lake and the Palacio de Cristal. Admission is included to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, home of Real Madrid. You have the afternoon at leisure, and in the evening we provide a return transfer to the hotel.
Day 5 - Madrid - Granada
We depart Madrid early, heading south through La Mancha, with our first stop in Puerto Lápice – a Manchego village evocative of Don Quixote. We continue into Andalusia via Despeñaperros, arriving in Granada, where lunch is included. In the afternoon, if you have chosen the option that includes the Alhambra, we explore the palace and its Generalife Gardens with a local guide. Very important note: visitor numbers to the Alhambra are strictly regulated by law – to secure admission, tickets are issued when your tour is confirmed, and it is essential to provide accurate personal details at booking. Ticket costs are non‑refundable in case of cancellation. In rare cases where the Alhambra visit is not possible, we will instead tour the Royal Alcázar of Seville, of comparable historical and architectural significance.
Day 6 - Granada - Tangier - Asilah - Rabat
Departing Granada, we traverse the Costa del Sol. On reaching Algeciras or Tarifa, we board a modern ferry to cross the Strait of Gibraltar – tickets included. Passengers carry their own luggage, as the coach typically does not make the crossing. On arrival in Morocco, we journey through striking landscapes, stopping first in Asilah, a walled Atlantic town once a pirate stronghold, now full of life. There is time for lunch before we continue to Rabat, where dinner is included.
Day 7 - Rabat - Casablanca - Marrakech
We take a panoramic tour of Rabat to see the Royal Palace, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the Kasbah of the Udayas. Around midday we head to Casablanca for a short city tour with a local guide, including the exterior of the magnificent Hassan II Mosque. Later we continue to Marrakech. After arriving at the hotel, you can opt for a traditional horse‑drawn carriage ride to the famous Jemaa el‑Fnaa square. Dinner is included.
Day 8 - Marrakech
Today we explore one of the world’s most compelling cities – Marrakech, which gave Morocco its name. Our tour follows the robust city walls, Jemaa el‑Fnaa, the Medina, the Koutoubia Mosque and the Bahia Palace – tickets included. Lunch is included, after which you have free time to relax by the pool or in the garden, or to browse the souks. In the evening, you can join the Fantasy Party – an optional experience.
Day 9 - Marrakech - Ait Benhadou - Ouarzazate - Boumalne Dades
We set out to cross the Atlas Mountains, snow‑capped peaks often in view as we leave Marrakech’s palm groves. We pass small Berber villages perched on the edges of deep gorges and stop at the fortified village of Aït Benhaddou, famed for its film appearances. Continuing through landscapes of biblical character, we pause in Ouarzazate, known for its impressive kasbah, then travel the Valley of Roses to Boumalne Dades, where dinner is included. Note: in winter, roads may close due to snow – if required, this section will be rescheduled according to our alternative plan, and access to the Sahara depends on road conditions.
Day 10 - Boumalne Dades - Todgha - Erfoud
We embark on an exhilarating journey along the fringes of the Sahara – the Valley of the Kasbahs, river valleys lined with thousands of palms, rocky plains giving way to oases and adobe villages, and formidable fortresses guarding ancient routes. We visit the awe‑inspiring Todgha Gorge, where cliffs rise more than 100 metres on either side. En route we stop at a small adobe town near Khorbat, where you can learn about a desert community supported by a foundation – access may be affected by weather such as river flooding. We continue to Erfoud. If you wish, you can take an off‑road excursion to the dunes for a spectacular sunset. Lunch is included.
Day 11 - Erfoud - Fez
We depart early from Erfoud, recrossing the Atlas through dramatic gorges and striking scenery, then traverse a high, chilly plateau inhabited by nomadic shepherds. We pause in Midelt, a commercial town known for its agriculture, and continue to the Middle Atlas for lunch – included – by a lake in a beautiful natural setting. The landscape then shifts to dense forests where snow is common in winter. In Azrou’s national park we may observe lively colonies of monkeys. We continue to Bhalil, a peaceful Middle Atlas town whose colourful old quarter incorporates former caves. Before reaching our hotel in Fez, we admire views of the ancient city from the Marinid Tombs. Dinner is included.
Day 12 - Fez - Tangier
We tour Fez, entering through the Bronze Gates of the Royal Palace and exploring the Jewish quarter, its lively souks and the tanners’ quarter. The country’s cultural capital is renowned for its Medina, which preserves the traditional Arab atmosphere like no other. We conclude with lunch included at a historic palace in the Medina. In the afternoon we travel north on a modern motorway, reaching Tangier by evening. Dinner is included.
Day 13 - Tangier - Seville
You have free time in Tangier – perhaps for some last‑minute shopping. We then take the ferry back to Spain. The coach will not be on board, so each passenger must take their own luggage on the ferry. On arrival in Algeciras or Tarifa we continue to Seville, reaching the city in the evening, with dinner included.
Day 14 - Seville
In the morning we embark on a city tour of Seville – the cathedral with its famous Giralda, the banks of the Guadalquivir and the characterful districts of Santa Cruz and Triana. After the tour, we include a relaxing boat ride on the Guadalquivir for sweeping views. In the evening, you can choose to attend a flamenco tablao.
Day 15 - Seville - Merida - Evora - Lisbon
We leave Seville, travelling through rolling hills and broad pasturelands towards Extremadura. In Mérida, admission is included to the Archaeological Ensemble – Roman Theatre and Amphitheatre – one of the best‑preserved sites and a World Heritage Site. You have time for lunch and a stroll through the pedestrian historic centre, full of local charm. We then continue into Portugal, stopping in Évora – another World Heritage Site – noted for its whitewashed streets, Renaissance palaces and cathedral, before reaching Lisbon in the evening.
Day 16 - Lisbon
In the morning we take a sightseeing tour of Lisbon – the Portuguese capital of seven hills, with its winding alleys, iconic tiles, a sense of saudade and luminous Atlantic light. We also visit Belém, from where the great navigators set sail in the 15th century. The afternoon is free – you can wander to the Bairro Alto and its viewpoint, or, if you wish, take an optional excursion to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril. In the evening we return to the hotel from lively Restauradores Square, lined with bars and cafés.
Day 17 - Lisbon
After breakfast, our journey concludes – we hope you leave with wonderful memories.
