Day 1 - Madrid - Ciudad Rodrigo - Porto
We depart early from Madrid, crossing the Castile region to the Mirador de los Cuatro Postes for sweeping views of Ávila’s magnificent walls. Near the Portuguese border we stop in Ciudad Rodrigo for a stroll through its medieval centre – we’ll see the cathedral and ancient ramparts – before continuing to Porto. On arrival, we take a 50 minute cruise on the Douro aboard a traditional Portuguese rabelo boat for a fresh perspective on the city’s riverside. Afterwards, you have free time to explore the lively medieval Ribeira district, with its narrow lanes, historic merchant houses and cafés, before we head to the hotel. Note: If the number of passengers travelling from Madrid to Porto is very low, this section may be operated by plane and the stop in Ciudad Rodrigo will be cancelled.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Porto - Braga - Bom Jesus - Guimarães - Aveiro - Coimbra
From Porto, we head north to Braga – Portugal’s religious capital – for a stroll through the historic centre and its ancient cathedral. We ride the world’s oldest funicular up to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus for magnificent views; you may choose to walk back down to appreciate its baroque stairway.We continue to Guimarães – Portugal’s first capital – where the Palace of the Dukes reflects the city’s historic importance. You’ll have free time for lunch.In the afternoon we turn west to Aveiro, often called the Venice of Portugal for its canals and colourful houses. Here we include a Moliceiro boat ride to explore the waterways and salt flats, and we taste a typical local sweet on board.We arrive in Coimbra in the late afternoon – dinner is included at the hotel.
Day 3 - Coimbra - Batalha - Nazare - Obidos - Lisbon
We’ll spend time in Coimbra, Portugal’s third largest city, known for its old university and steep streets. Continuing south, we stop at Batalha Monastery – entrance included – an impressive medieval mausoleum of kings. In Nazaré, a fishing town and seaside resort, you have time for lunch and a stroll. We’ll also take the elevator up to the old city – tickets included – for impressive ocean views. As we travel towards Lisbon, we stop in Óbidos, one of Portugal’s most beautiful towns, with white streets adorned with flowers. We arrive in Lisbon at approximately 7.30 pm.
Day 4 - Lisbon
This morning we take a guided tour of Lisbon, the city of seven hills, exploring its historic neighbourhoods, ceramic tiles and bright Atlantic light. We also visit the Belém neighbourhood – the departure point for Portuguese navigators in the 15th century. The afternoon is free – you can wander the old quarters, head up to Bairro Alto for its viewpoint, or join an optional excursion to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril. In the evening, we meet at Restauradores Square – a lively area of cafés and bars – for the return to the hotel.
Day 5 - Lisbon - Caceres - Madrid
We depart Portugal early, travelling across the Alentejo and pausing in Estremoz for a coffee break – a chance to see its medieval castle and cobbled streets. We then cross into Spain and continue to Cáceres, where you have free time for lunch and to explore the historic centre, renowned as one of the best preserved medieval and Renaissance urban complexes in the world. We continue to Madrid, arriving in the evening.
Day 6 - Madrid
After breakfast, we conclude our tour in Madrid. There are no further scheduled activities today – you’re free to make your onward arrangements.
