Itinerary
Day 1 - Colombo
We meet our Adventure Leader and fellow travellers for a welcome briefing – we run through the journey and essentials before our Sri Lankan adventure begins. As evening falls, we set out on foot through Colombo’s historic old town to explore its cultural heritage, taking in key landmarks as our guide brings the city’s stories to life.
Day 2 - Negombo - Kurunegala - Dambulla
We depart your accommodation and follow the coastal road to Negombo’s bustling fish market – we wander among the stalls as fishermen auction the morning catch and absorb the rhythms of the coastal community. Turning inland, we continue towards Kurunegala, passing coconut plantations and lush countryside. At the Sputnik Volunteer Centre we learn about youth programmes, community engagement and volunteer initiatives, meeting staff and students involved in education, training and social development. We carry on to Dambulla through rural villages and scenic farmland, then explore the Dambulla Cave Temple complex – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – admiring serene Buddha statues and vivid murals within the cave shrines.
Day 3 - Dambulla
We climb the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress to explore its ancient ruins and enjoy sweeping views from the summit as we delve into its royal past. In your free time, you can discover more of Dambulla at your own pace – relax at your guesthouse or wander through the surrounding villages.
Day 4 - Dambulla - Kandy
We hike the scenic Manigala Trail in the lush Knuckles Mountain Range, pausing at panoramic viewpoints amid varied forest landscapes. We then make our way from Dambulla to Kandy – watching the scenery shift from rural plains to mist–tipped hill country.
Day 5 - Kandy - Kitulgala
This morning is yours to enjoy Kandy at your own pace – you might browse local shops, stroll by the lake or simply unwind amid the hill country scenery. Later, we make our way to the rainforest town of Kitulgala, descending into the island’s wet zone with forested views along the way. In Kitulgala we set out on an exhilarating white–water rafting adventure, navigating lively rapids surrounded by lush jungle.
Day 6 - Hatton - Ella - Kitulgala
We transfer from Kitulgala to Hatton railway station to begin our hill–country train journey. We ride one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic rail routes through tea country, passing forests, villages and sweeping vistas en route to Ella. In Ella we follow a gentle trail to Little Adam’s Peak for panoramic valley views. You then have time to enjoy the tea plantations and hill scenery surrounding the town.
Day 7 - Ella
We hike Stage 15 of the Pekoe Trail through fragrant forests and rolling tea plantations, reaching the Ella Rock viewpoint for sweeping mountain vistas. We then continue along Stage 16, passing the Nine Arches Bridge and following quiet village paths to the Demodara Railway Loop. After the hike, you can unwind in Ella – linger in the town’s cafés, soak up the hillside scenery and explore at your own pace in the cool evening air.
Day 8 - Ella

Day 9 - Ella - Udawalawe
We hike to Mini World’s End at sunrise for a dramatic outlook from the cliff, taking in panoramic views across Ella’s valleys and ridges. We then visit the Buduruvagala rock temple to see its ancient carved Buddha statues and hear about their spiritual significance and historic artistry. On the way from Ella to Udawalawe, we watch the landscapes change from forest to rural scenes. In Udawalawe National Park we venture out on a jeep safari to spot elephants, birds and other wildlife – a rewarding experience in one of Sri Lanka’s most dependable places for wildlife viewing.
Day 10 - Udawalawe - Unawatuna
We tour a working tea estate to discover Sri Lanka’s tea production from leaf to cup, sample fresh brews and stroll through the surrounding plantations. From Udawalawe we continue to the southern coastline – arriving in Unawatuna for a relaxed beachside atmosphere.
Day 11 - Unawatuna
On Unawatuna’s scenic coastline, we ease into surfing with a lesson ideal for beginners – we learn the basics on the sand before heading into the water to ride our first waves with attentive instructor guidance. We then delve into Sri Lankan craftsmanship as we create a traditional mask using local techniques – exploring the cultural meanings and symbolism behind each design. In your own time, you can unwind on the beach or wander through Unawatuna’s lively cafés and shops, savouring the slower pace of the southern coast.
Day 12 - Unawatuna - Galle
We take a tuk–tuk ride to Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, tracing the scenic coastline on the way. Within the walls we explore the ramparts, visit the lighthouse and wander the lanes, admiring colonial architecture, characterful boutiques and seafront viewpoints. In your free time, you can relax on the beach or dip into Unawatuna’s lively cafés and shops – a chance to settle into the slower pace of the southern coast.

We take part in a traditional pooja blessing at a Buddhist temple – a serene chance to connect with local spirituality before we head from Unawatuna back to Colombo to conclude the tour.
