We will depart Cairo early in the morning for an exploration of a surprisingly verdant Egypt, with lakes nestled amidst the desert expanse. Our first stop is at the Pyramid of Meidum, where entry is included. This ancient monument is regarded as the first Egyptian pyramid and was constructed around 2600 BC. Its distinctive stepped design will captivate you, and those who wish can access the burial chamber by descending a long passageway. You'll be able to see large mastabas that house the tombs of some pharaohs' relatives.Next, we journey to the Al Faiyum Oasis, bordered by the expansive Karun Lake. This lake is key to the oasis’s lush agriculture, often referred to as the "garden of Egypt." The lakeside area offers a popular retreat for locals. Following this, we visit the necropolis of Beni Hasan, perched on cliffs overlooking the Nile Valley. Of the 39 tombs that date back to 2125–1795 BC, we can explore four, providing us with a captivating glimpse into the daily life of the era. The solitude of this site is striking, being largely untouched by tourism. Adjacent to the tombs, we stop by Deir El-Muharraq, a monastery and Coptic pilgrimage site. Monks here believe that Mary and Jesus resided for six months in a cave at this location, and tradition holds that a church was constructed around the year 60, reputedly making it the "oldest Christian church in the world." We then proceed to Assiut, the provincial capital, where dinner is included.
Day 5 - Asyut - Sohag - Abydos - Luxor
Today, we depart from Assiut and travel to Sohag, located in a region known for its rich Coptic heritage. Our first stop is at the White Monastery, an imposing structure originally built in the fourth century. Although it has faced destruction over the years, its robust walls have stood the test of time. Interestingly, stones from ancient pharaonic temples were used in its construction, and some still feature carvings of ancient deities and hieroglyphics. Historically, this monastery housed Egypt’s largest library. Next, we'll visit the Red Monastery, renowned as one of Egypt’s most remarkable Christian edifices. The chapel within, dating back to the fourth century, is adorned with restored frescoes that vividly illustrate the religious architecture of antiquity. We continue our journey to Abydos, which has been a pivotal site for the worship of Osiris, the god of the dead. Serving as a pilgrimage site and necropolis for over 4,500 years, this place still conceals numerous unexcavated tombs. Our first stop is Esna, where you'll discover a remarkable temple, one of the few in Egypt still crowned with its original roof. This temple, buried for centuries by sediment from the Nile, offers a rare glimpse into ancient architecture and vibrant colours preserved by time. The Temple of Esna was unearthed in the 19th century, adding yet another chapter to its storied past. While there, you can also explore the restored caravanserai and admire the floodgates of the Nile from afar.We then proceed to Edfu, home to the magnificent Temple of Horus. Remarkable for its dual dedication to Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus, the falcon god, its symmetry divides it into two sections, each honouring one of these deities. The temple's reliefs and hieroglyphs richly illustrate scenes from daily life, mythology, and ancient Egyptian medicine. We also explore the compelling museum of Crocodiles, showcasing several mummified specimens.
