Itinerary
Day 1 - Dibrugarh
Arrive in Dibrugarh, where we meet you at the airport and provide an assisted transfer to your hotel. Known as the tea city of India, Dibrugarh is a major city with notable growth in communications and industry. We visit Jokai Botanical Garden cum Germplasm Centre, home to several endangered plant species; Shrikshetra Dhaam – Lord Jagannath Temple, a replica of the Puri temple in Odisha and among Assam’s important temples; and Koli Aai Thaan, a spiritual centre dedicated to Koli Aai. In your free time, you can visit Sarumechlow and Bormechow Maidam – the graves of two queens from the Ahom dynasty – as well as Dehing Satra, which preserves ruins from the Ahom period, and the Buddhist monastery at Namphake Village. Later, you can browse the local market, then we enjoy a cultural programme in the evening at a heritage bungalow. Overnight with a host in the village or at a guesthouse.
Day 2 -
After breakfast at the hotel, we drive about 120 km – approximately 3 hours – from Dibrugarh to Mon, stopping at Shangnyu village. Here we see a remarkable wooden monument measuring about 8 feet high and 13 feet in breadth, carved with figures of people and other creatures. Local tradition holds that it was made by heavenly beings. We also view the memorial stone set in front of the Angh’s house. After lunch, we visit Chui village to see a traditional Konyak Naga house, notable for its main pillar projecting through the roof. Dinner is included, followed by an overnight stay with a village host or in a guesthouse.
Day 3 -
Mon – Mokokchung (155 km – about 4 hours). After breakfast, we drive to Mokokchung, headquarters of the Ao Nagas. The Ao are known for their colourful attire and motif‑rich shawls that denote social status. We continue to Longkhum village, once the vanguard of the Ao region during the era of spears and daos; at around 1,586 metres, it can offer distant views of the Himalaya on clear winter mornings. We then explore the bamboo forest at Mopunchket village. Dinner and overnight with a host in the village/guesthouse.
Day 4 -
After breakfast, we drive 115 km – around 3 hours – from Mokokchung to Tuophema. On arrival, we take a walk to an Angami village and settle into the community run resort huts with modern amenities. Lunch is served, then we tour both the old and the new Tuophema villages and visit the village museum. In the evening, we enjoy cultural entertainment presented by the villagers. Dinner and overnight in the community resort huts.
Day 5 -
At Touphema, we explore the surroundings on foot, walking through the village and the nearby forest. After breakfast, we follow a forest trail to the neighbouring Rengma village – a soft trek of about 3½ hours – and take a tour on arrival. Lunch is served in the village, then we return to Touphema for dinner. Overnight in community resort huts.
Day 6 - Kohima
After breakfast in Touphema, we drive to Kohima (35 km – approximately 1 hour 20 minutes) and check in to the hotel. Later, we visit the State Museum for an insight into Naga tribal life and their colourful traditional attire, followed by the local market, where you can see insects and other foods regarded as delicacies. We also visit the Second World War Memorial at the site of the famed “Tennis Court” battle, which many historians have called the bloodiest battle. We return to the hotel for lunch, then continue to Kisama Heritage Village – the venue for the annual Hornbill Festival held from 1–7 December – to view traditional houses representing the 16 Naga tribes. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 7 - Kohima - Khonoma
Kohima to Khonoma – 20 km – about 1 hour. After breakfast at the hotel, we drive to Khonoma, a village noted for its courage and valour – its people fought a pitched battle against a British expedition in October 1879. On arrival, we walk in from the main gate and spend the day meeting villagers and learning about the work of local artisans and craftsmen. The terraced fields on the surrounding slopes offer broad views. After lunch, we take a tour of the village, then share dinner with our hosts. Lunch and dinner included. Overnight with a host in the village.
Day 8 -
Khonoma. We explore the surrounding area, then take a gentle trekking route through the reserve forest to the Tragopan bird sanctuary. We stop for a picnic lunch – cooked over an open fire – before returning to the village by early evening. Overnight with your host in the village.
Day 9 - Imphal
Khonoma to Imphal – 150 kilometres/around 4 hours. After breakfast, we drive to Imphal and check in at the hotel. Later, we explore the city’s monuments, temples and ceremonial sites that showcase Imphal’s rich past. We visit Kangla Fort Palace – once the seat of local rulers and now home to historic relics – and the centuries old Polo Ground. We continue to the Manipur State Museum to see tribal artefacts and a large royal boat, then visit Shri Shri Govindaji Temple – next to the former Royal Palace – with its twin domes, large hall and shrines to Hindu gods. We also stop at Khwairamband Bazaar and the War Cemeteries. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 10 - Imphal - Moirang
Imphal – Keibul Lamjao National Park – Imphal (about 150 km round trip – approximately eight hours). After breakfast at the hotel, we set out for Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world’s only floating national park and the last natural habitat of the marsh‑dwelling brow‑antlered deer, locally called the Sangai. We then drive to Moirang, the ancient capital of the Manipuri kings and a centre of Meitei culture, before visiting Loktak Lake and Sendra Island. At Loktak – the largest freshwater lake in the North East – we watch the unique floating islands, or phumdi, floating vegetation on which people live. Return to Imphal in the evening for dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 11 - Imphal
After breakfast at the hotel, we transfer you to Imphal airport, timed to your flight schedule, for your onward journey.
