Itinerary
Day 1 - Palermo
Arrive at Palermo Airport and collect your car before making your way to your hotel in the city. After settling in, we recommend an afternoon visit to Palermo’s historic centre. Begin with the Capella Palatina, a remarkable private chapel built by Norman King Roger II, renowned for its intricate mosaics that blend Arab and Byzantine styles. Next, visit the Cathedral, a fascinating structure that reflects a mix of architectural influences, having once stood on the site of a Roman temple, a Byzantine basilica and later a mosque. Finish your tour at La Martorana Church, a fine example of Norman architecture adorned with exquisite mosaics. Spend the night in Palermo.
Day 2 - Palermo - Monreale - Palermo
After breakfast, we recommend a visit to Monreale, home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site – the magnificent Cattedrale di Monreale. Perched on a hilltop, the cathedral is renowned for its stunning interior mosaics and remarkable Arab-Norman artistry. We explore the peaceful cloisters, where intricate craftsmanship offers a tranquil contrast to the vibrant cathedral. If accessible, we take the opportunity to climb the cathedral’s clock tower for panoramic views of the surrounding area. Afterwards, you may enjoy a coffee at one of the charming cafés around the cathedral square before returning to Palermo for the night.
Day 3 - Palermo - Catania
After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we suggest visiting Cefalù, a charming fishing town known for its picturesque streets, inviting shops and a variety of restaurants. For those who enjoy hiking, we recommend ascending La Rocca di Cefalù – the rocky promontory overlooking the town. The climb rewards you with spectacular views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the coastline and the historic rooftops below. Along the way, you will encounter the ancient ruins of the Temple of Diana, offering a fascinating glimpse into the area’s past. In the afternoon, we will continue to your next hotel in Catania for your overnight stay.
Day 4 - Catania - Taormina - Catania
Enjoy a hearty breakfast at the hotel before making your own way to Taormina. We explore the town’s key highlights, beginning with the Greek Theatre – an ancient amphitheatre renowned for its impressive architecture and stunning views of the sea and Mount Etna. Nearby, we visit the Roman Odeon, a smaller yet fascinating historical site. Take time to wander around Piazza IX Aprile, a lively square celebrated for its panoramic vistas. We also visit the Duomo, a beautiful cathedral featuring striking mosaics and a rich history. For a taste of local flavour, we recommend trying the classic Sicilian granita with brioche at one of Taormina’s oldest cafés. For lunch, you might choose to visit a nearby winery on the slopes of Mount Etna, where traditional Sicilian dishes are paired with excellent wines, all set against a remarkable backdrop. We return to Catania for the night.
Day 5 - Catania
Enjoy your final Sicilian breakfast before taking a brief tour of Catania’s city centre. Afterwards, make your way to either Catania or Palermo Airport to return your car in time for your departure flight.
