Itinerary
Day 1 - Kigali - Ruhengeri
Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be met and transferred to the Virunga Conservation area, a drive of approximately two and a half hours. Time permitting, you may choose to explore local markets, villages and communities at an additional cost, or take an optional visit to the striking twin lakes Bulera and Ruhondo, payable locally. You will then check in and enjoy dinner at the lodge, with an overnight stay in Ruhengeri.
Day 2 - Ruhengeri - Kigali
After a hearty breakfast, we transfer to the Volcanoes National Park offices for a briefing by the park guides on appropriate conduct in the forest and around the mountain gorillas. We then travel over mildly bumpy roads to the trailhead, where the trek begins. From here, there is a 10 to 20-minute walk across cultivated fields to the forest edge. The gorilla trek takes place within the park and typically lasts until around midday, depending on the gorillas’ location. Encountering these magnificent creatures is often described as one of the most profound wildlife experiences in the world. It is advisable to bring plenty of water, a good camera with ample fast-speed film or memory cards, and waterproof clothing, as rain can occur suddenly. Zip-lock bags for cameras and film are also recommended. After the trek, we return to the hotel for lunch before transferring to Kigali for check-in and dinner. Overnight accommodation is in Kigali.
Day 3 - Kigali
After breakfast, we transfer you to Kigali Airport for your onward flight. We recommend booking a departure time after midday to allow for a relaxed morning.
