You’ll roll past the Cederberg and Namaqualand – with seasonal wildflowers – then cross into Namibia for the Fish River Canyon, the Namib’s ochre dunes at Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, and time in breezy Swakopmund and along the Skeleton Coast. Expect ancient rock art at Brandberg, big game in Etosha, serene river cruising to Popa Falls, and Delta wildlife in Khwai and Moremi. Itinerary
Day 1 - Cape Town - Citrusdal
We leave Cape Town for the Cederberg’s rugged mountains and sweeping rooibos fields, continuing to Citrusdal for the night. We settle into our lodge before a traditional South African dinner – a relaxed chance to meet fellow travellers and enjoy warm local hospitality.
Day 2 - Citrusdal - Orange River - Namaqualand
We head north through Namaqualand as the land becomes ever more arid, reaching our riverside base on the Orange River. If we travel between July and September, we witness colourful carpets of wildflowers unique to Namaqualand – a spectacular seasonal display that draws visitors from across the globe.
Day 3 - Orange River - Fish River Canyon
We depart the Orange River and journey inland to the Fish River Canyon. Near the rim we explore dramatic viewpoints and take a relaxed guided walk – soaking up sweeping vistas across one of Africa’s largest and most impressive canyons.
Day 4 - Keetmanshoop - Namib-Naukluft
From Keetmanshoop we drive deeper into Namibia’s interior towards the Namib–Naukluft, passing farms and wide desert plains as the first ochre dunes appear. We explore the Quiver Tree Forest and the striking dolerite stacks at Giants Playground – a surreal, much–photographed geological scene.
Day 5 - Namib-Naukluft - Sossusvlei & Deadvlei - Sesriem Canyon
We start early to climb Dune 45 for a sunrise panorama over the Namib – shifting colours and long shadows creating one of Namibia’s signature moments. We then take a 4x4 shuttle into Sossusvlei and Deadvlei to walk among ancient camelthorn trees on vast salt pans framed by towering red dunes. Later we explore Sesriem Canyon – following the floor carved by the seasonal Tsauchab River to admire its narrow, sculpted walls.
Day 6 - Namib-Naukluft - Swakopmund - Namib Desert
We travel west across the desert, pausing at the Tropic of Capricorn marker for photos, then continue to Swakopmund – a coastal town known for adventure and German–influenced charm. On arrival we join a local expert for a guided desert excursion to discover the remarkable flora and fauna adapted to this harsh environment.
Day 7 - Swakopmund
In this seaside resort with German influences, you have a free evening – wander the streets, linger in cafés or take a leisurely stroll along the beach.
Day 8 - Swakopmund - Brandberg - Swakopmund Coast
We follow the Skeleton Coast north before turning inland towards Brandberg, Namibia’s highest massif. We pause for photos at Wlotskabaken and stop to view delicate lichen fields as our guide explains how they survive in the coastal desert. We then hike with a guide across rocky terrain to the famed White Lady rock painting – an ancient artwork estimated to be around 2,000 years old.
Day 9 - Brandberg - Etosha National Park
We leave Brandberg for Etosha National Park, one of Africa’s premier wildlife areas, and enter the park for our first afternoon game drive.
Day 10 - Etosha National Park
We spend the afternoon on safari in Etosha – scanning the savannah and the pan’s edges for elephants, antelope and predators.
Day 11 - Etosha National Park
We devote a full day to exploring Etosha, moving between savannah, woodland and open plains as we search for predators, large herds and remarkable desert–adapted species.
Day 12 - Etosha National Park - Divundu
We leave Etosha’s white pans behind and travel north east to the Kavango River, arriving in the Divundu area for a riverside overnight.
Day 13 - Okavango River - Mahangu National Park
We cruise upriver to Popa Falls – a series of pretty cascades on the Okavango – enjoying tranquil scenes with chances to spot crocodiles, hippos and colourful birdlife along the banks. In the afternoon we head out by 4x4 for a game drive in Mahangu National Park, searching for elephants, buffalo, antelope and other plains game in this wildlife–rich reserve.
Day 14 - Divundu - Maun - Kavango River
This morning we take a leisurely boat cruise on the Kavango River, watching river birds and keeping an eye out for hippos and other wildlife along the lush banks. We then cross into Botswana and drive to Maun – the gateway to the Okavango Delta – and settle into our lodge or campsite in this bustling safari town.
Day 15 - Maun - Khwai Conservation Area
We leave Maun in smaller safari vehicles for the Khwai Conservation Area on the edge of the Okavango Delta – travelling through bush country into a wildlife–rich region.
Day 16 - Moremi Game Reserve
We spend a full day on 4x4 game drives in the Moremi Game Reserve – crossing wetlands, open grasslands and dappled woodland in search of elephants, big cats and a wealth of other wildlife.
Day 17 - Khwai Conservation Area - Nata - Salt Pans Viewpoint
We depart Khwai at first light in open safari vehicles, reconnect with our truck and continue towards Nata – a long travel day across central Botswana with wide–open views. If conditions allow, we stop at a seasonal viewpoint over the nearby salt pans to take in vast horizons and, when water levels are right, look for flamingos and other waterbirds.
Day 18 - Chobe River
In the late afternoon we take a boat cruise on the Chobe River, watching elephants, buffalo and other wildlife gather at the water’s edge. As the sun sets over the river – perfect for photographs – it provides a gentle finale to the day.
Day 19 - Kasane - Victoria Falls
We cross from Botswana into Zimbabwe and drive to Victoria Falls, then check in close to the waterfalls. After settling in, you have a free evening in town – unwind by the pool, browse the shops or plan optional activities for the coming days.
Day 20 - Johannesburg
Breakfast is included this morning. You have the rest of the day free in Victoria Falls – take it easy, explore at your own pace or simply relax and soak up the setting. Lunch and dinner are at your own expense.
