Day 1 - Madrid - San Sebastian - Bordeaux
We begin our adventure in Madrid, setting off after breakfast towards the scenic landscapes of Castile and the Basque Country. Our first destination is San Sebastián, renowned for its picturesque bay and vibrant atmosphere. You'll have the opportunity to take a leisurely stroll along the stunning La Concha beach and perhaps enjoy a glass of local wine while exploring the charming old quarter. Take some time for lunch before we continue our journey into France. We will arrive in the elegant city of Bordeaux by evening, where we suggest a pleasant evening walk through its historic city centre to soak up its unique charm. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Bordeaux - Lourdes
In Bordeaux, a city whose entire centre is a recognised World Heritage Site, we’ll begin our day at the mesmerising "Water Mirror" before venturing through the old town. Here, you'll find charming pedestrian streets and a majestic 11th-century cathedral. Later, enjoy some free time along the picturesque banks of the Garonne River, where quaint restaurants offer perfect spots for lunch. If you prefer, you can explore the Citè du Vin, a captivating interactive museum dedicated to the history and elaboration of wine. In the afternoon, we’ll travel towards the Pyrenees, reaching Lourdes by mid-afternoon. Upon arrival, you can visit the renowned sanctuary, and we highly recommend attending the serene candlelit procession. An evening meal is included to round off your day.
Day 3 - Lourdes - Carcassonne - Narbona - Marseille
On the third day, we journey through the scenic landscapes of southern France, arriving in the enchanting city of Carcassonne. Renowned for its beautifully preserved medieval walls, Carcassonne invites you to meander through its ancient streets at your own pace. After taking in the historic atmosphere and enjoying lunch, we'll proceed to Narbonne. You'll have the opportunity to explore this historic city in the Occitanie region, known for its picturesque old town. In the late afternoon, we arrive in Marseille, France’s vibrant second-largest city. We highly recommend a stroll through the lively Vieux-Port, where the bustling atmosphere is enhanced by a wealth of charming small restaurants.
Day 4 - Marseille - Arles - Avignon - Lyon
Today, we explore some of the most picturesque locations in Provence, beginning with Arles, a UNESCO World Heritage city renowned for its Roman and medieval heritage, as well as its connection to Van Gogh. Our next destination is Les Baux, a charming medieval village. Here, we'll experience the captivating Carrières de Lumières, an underground spectacle that creatively blends art, imagery, and sound within ancient quarries. Avignon awaits us with the majestic Palais des Papes, where you'll have time to enjoy lunch and a wander. Our journey concludes in Lyon, where we will stroll through the historic old town, recognised as a World Heritage Site, and take the cable car to Notre-Dame de Fourvière. This impressive basilica offers splendid views over the city. Please note, if the Carrières de Lumières is unavailable, we will instead visit the Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard.
Day 5 - Lyon - Tournus - Savigny Castle - Beaune - Dijon
Departing from Lyon, we'll journey into the scenic Burgundy region. Our first stop is Tournus, a charming town known for its striking stone gate and grand abbey. Following this, we'll head to Beaune, the thriving wine capital of Burgundy, where you'll have time for lunch and the chance to roam. We suggest visiting the wine museum or exploring the historic hospice. Our adventure continues to Savigny Castle, nestled in the heart of this renowned winemaking area. This 15th-century castle not only boasts rich historical architecture but also hosts fascinating museums showcasing collections of motorbikes, racing cars, planes, and helicopters. Finally, we make our way to Dijon, the vibrant capital of Burgundy filled with lively streets and numerous medieval and Renaissance structures, including the impressive Palace of the Dukes.
Day 6 - Dijon - Besancon - Colmar - Riquewihr - Strasbourg
We will remain in the Burgundy region, starting our day with a visit to Besançon, a city of Roman origin, complete with a charming historic centre and a stunning 17th-century citadel that offers a panoramic view of the town. Continuing onwards, we will venture into Alsace, a region notable for its historical tug of war between France and Germany, which has given it a rich cultural blend, including its own German dialect, Alsatian. Our first stop in Alsace is Colmar, celebrated for its distinctive architecture, with colourful half-timbered houses and picturesque canals. Known for its white wine and cuisine, Colmar provides a delightful setting for lunch and a relaxed walk. In the afternoon, we will explore Riquewihr, an enchanting medieval village with cobblestone streets and vibrant houses that seem to leap from the pages of a fairy tale—it served as inspiration for some scenes in Beauty and the Beast. Additionally, we will visit a traditional winery for a tasting of local wine accompanied by a typical sweet treat. Our day concludes in Strasbourg that evening, where you can explore the cathedral area and Petite France, both brimming with character and inviting eateries.
Day 7 - Strasbourg - Epernay - Paris
On day seven, we have the pleasure of experiencing Strasbourg, the vibrant capital of Alsace, renowned for hosting the European Parliament. The city's historic centre brims with charm, featuring quaint medieval streets, a magnificent Gothic cathedral, and delightful canals adorned with flowers. We will embark on a captivating boat trip through the canals of Petite France, a true highlight of Strasbourg. Following this, we head into the heart of the Champagne region. Here, you’ll uncover the mysteries of the world's most famous sparkling wine with a fascinating guided tour and tasting at a traditional cellar. Our journey continues with a brief visit to Épernay, the capital of Champagne, where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll in this picturesque town, famed for its prestigious wineries. Later, we make our way to Paris, arriving in the evening.
Day 8 - Paris
On the eighth day, we will enjoy a final breakfast together before concluding our tour. As our journey comes to an end in Paris, we hope you depart with wonderful memories that will linger long after you've left.
