Starting in Madrid and ending in Madrid, this 13–day adventure sweeps through Spain and Portugal’s greatest hits. You’ll explore Madrid’s boulevards and the Bernabéu, then continue to Barcelona for Gaudí and Mediterranean flair. Travelling the coast, expect to see Peniscola and Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences before heading inland to the cave homes of Guadix. Andalusia brings Granada’s Alhambra views and dramatic Ronda, before soulful Seville with a river cruise and optional flamenco. Crossing into Portugal, you’ll visit Mérida, Évora and Lisbon. Itinerary
Day 1 - Madrid
Welcome to Madrid. On arrival at the airport we’ll transfer you to your hotel. You’ll have free time until the tour begins – please check the information board at hotel reception for details of the welcome meeting with your guide and fellow travellers.In the evening we’ll provide a transfer to Plaza Mayor and the nearby La Latina neighbourhood, well known for its lively atmosphere and tapas bars. You can choose where to dine – options include Spanish, Indian, Chinese and Middle Eastern cuisines.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Madrid
This morning we set out on a comprehensive tour of central Madrid, taking in Paseo del Prado, Cibeles, Neptuno, Puerta de Alcalá, Plaza de Colón and Plaza Mayor. We then visit Retiro Park to see the lake and the Palacio de Cristal. Admission is included to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium – home of Real Madrid, considered by many to be the best football club in the world. You have the afternoon at leisure to explore as you wish, and in the evening we provide a return transfer to the hotel.
Day 3 - Madrid - Zaragoza - Poblet - Barcelona
We depart Madrid this morning, travelling east through the landscapes of Castile into Aragon. In Zaragoza we stop to see the Cathedral–Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar, then continue to Poblet Abbey – entry included – to visit one of the best preserved medieval monasteries. We then travel on to Barcelona, arriving in the evening.
Day 4 - Barcelona
In the morning, we begin with a panoramic tour of Barcelona, a Mediterranean city known for Gaudí and striking modernist architecture, its lively Ramblas, and the legacy of past World Expositions and the Olympic Games. The tour ends at Maremagnum – a modern waterfront leisure and dining complex by the sea next to Columbus Square – where you can stroll through the area at your own pace. The afternoon is at leisure for you to continue exploring or relax as you wish, and we return to the hotel at the end of the day.
Day 5 - Barcelona - Peniscola - Valencia
We travel south along the Mediterranean, stopping in Peniscola – a medieval walled town edged by beaches – where you’ll have time for a stroll. We continue to Valencia, arriving around lunchtime. In the afternoon, we explore with a local guide to get to know this port city on the Levantine coast, with more than 2,000 years of history, where monuments from different eras sit alongside the contemporary City of Arts and Sciences. After the tour, you’ll have free time to explore at your own pace. A traditional local dinner is included.
Day 6 - Valencia - Alicante - Guadix - Granada
We leave Valencia and travel through the Valencian Community to Alicante, a Mediterranean city that blends golden sandy beaches with a characterful historic quarter, overlooked by the Castle of Santa Bárbara. You will have free time for a stroll.We continue across the arid landscapes of the Region of Murcia, stopping en route for lunch. Crossing into Andalusia, we make our first stop in Guadix, noted for its inhabited cave houses; its historic centre combines a Renaissance cathedral and traditional neighbourhoods with views towards the Sierra Nevada. We then continue to Granada, arriving in the late afternoon – dinner included.
Day 7 - Granada
Enjoy a full day at leisure in Granada, a historic city dominated by the Alhambra. You could visit the cathedral – which houses the tomb of the Catholic Monarchs – stroll through the Albaicín neighbourhood, and take in the views of the Alhambra from the Mirador de San Nicolás. Admission to the Alhambra is not included – if you would like to visit, please purchase tickets via the official website at https://tickets.alhambra-patronato.es or through companies that organise visits in the city.
Day 8 - Granada - Nerja - Malaga - Ronda - Seville
Leaving Granada, we take in striking scenery as we skirt the Sierra Nevada, then follow the Mediterranean along the Tropical Coast – a fertile shoreline where a mild microclimate supports guavas, mangoes and avocados, and once, sugar cane. We pause in Nerja to admire its cliff-fringed coast before continuing to Málaga, capital of the Costa del Sol, with a lively historic centre. You’ll have free time here for lunch and a stroll. Turning inland, we climb through the Andalusian sierras to Ronda – a spectacular white town set astride a dramatic gorge. We then continue to Seville, arriving in the late afternoon – dinner is included at the hotel.
Day 9 - Seville
In the morning, we explore Seville on a guided tour, taking in the cathedral with its famous Giralda, the banks of the Guadalquivir and the characterful neighbourhoods of Santa Cruz and Triana. After the tour, we enjoy an included boat cruise on the Guadalquivir for panoramic views of the city. In the evening, you can choose to attend a flamenco tablao.
Day 10 - Seville - Merida - Evora - Lisbon
We leave Seville, travelling through rolling hills and wide pasturelands towards Extremadura. In Mérida, we include admission to the Archaeological Ensemble – home to the Roman Theatre and Amphitheatre – a remarkably well‑preserved World Heritage Site. You’ll have time for lunch and a stroll through the pedestrian historic centre. We then continue into Portugal, stopping in Évora – another World Heritage Site – known for its whitewashed streets, Renaissance palaces and cathedral. We arrive in Lisbon in the evening.
Day 11 - Lisbon
This morning we take a city tour of Lisbon, the Portuguese capital spread across seven hills – exploring its narrow lanes, iconic tiles, a sense of saudade and bright Atlantic light. We also visit the Belém neighbourhood, from where Portuguese navigators set sail on ocean‑crossing voyages in the 15th century. The afternoon is free – you can explore on foot, head up to Bairro Alto for its viewpoint, or choose an optional excursion to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril. In the evening we provide a return transfer from lively Restauradores Square – lined with bars and cafés – back to the hotel.
Day 12 - Lisbon - Caceres - Madrid
We’ll depart Portugal early, crossing the Alentejo region, with a coffee stop in Estremoz – a town known for its medieval castle, cobbled streets and authentic character. We’ll then cross into Spain. In Cáceres, you’ll have time for lunch and to explore its historic centre, renowned as one of the best-preserved medieval and Renaissance urban ensembles in the world. We’ll continue to Madrid, arriving in the evening.
Day 13 - Madrid
After breakfast, our journey concludes – we wish you a smooth onward journey and many lasting memories.
