Itinerary
Day 1 - Colombo
Upon arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, you will be greeted by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Colombo. After checking in, take some time to relax and refresh following your flight. The remainder of the day is at your leisure. You may choose to unwind at the hotel or explore Colombo’s vibrant city centre. Consider visiting the Pettah District, one of the city’s oldest areas, where you can glimpse the bustling streets that once thrived with trade in rubber, tea, cinnamon and other local goods. Alternatively, explore Colombo’s cosmopolitan side with its stylish eateries, galleries and shops, or stroll along the seafront to enjoy views over the Indian Ocean. Overnight in Colombo.
Day 2 - Colombo - Sigiriya - Habarana
After breakfast at the hotel, we set off to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sigiriya Rock Fortress. This striking 5th-century citadel, built by King Kasyapa, rises dramatically with near-vertical walls leading to a flat summit where the ruins of an ancient palace remain. The site is a remarkable example of early urban planning, featuring extensive fortifications, royal gardens, ponds, canals, fountains and frescoes. We enter through the giant Lion’s Paws carved into the rock and take in views over the symmetrical gardens and water features below. Walking along the Mirror Wall, once polished so finely the king could see his reflection, we gain insight into the site’s artistry and history. A visit to the museum reveals details about the fortress’s hydraulic system that supplied water to the summit. After the tour, we transfer to Habarana for the night.
Day 3 - Polonnaruwa - Habarana
After breakfast, we transfer from Habarana to Polonnaruwa to explore the ancient kingdom that thrived here 800 years ago. Polonnaruwa was once a bustling commercial and religious centre, and its well-preserved archaeological site offers a clear glimpse into its past. We walk through the World Heritage Site to see stupas, reclining Buddha statues, irrigation canals and finely carved Hindu sculptures. Highlights include Vatadage, a distinctive circular relic house adorned with intricate stone carvings, and Gal Vihara, home to some of the finest Buddha statues sculpted from solid rock. We also visit the Nissankamalla Council Chamber, where King Nissanka Malla’s council convened, and Parakrama Samudra, an impressive 12th-century reservoir built to manage water supply between monsoons. In the evening, we return to Habarana for the night.
Day 4 - Habarana - Dambulla - Kandy
After breakfast, we begin the day with a visit to the Dambulla Cave Temple, a striking rock temple complex perched approximately 160 metres above the town. Explore five caves adorned with around 150 Buddha statues and vibrant paintings, showcasing some of Sri Lanka’s most significant religious art. Notice the giant golden Buddha statue gleaming in the sunlight as you enter the site. Afterwards, we continue to Kandy to visit the Temple of the Tooth, a golden-roofed shrine that houses the country’s most revered Buddhist relic – a tooth of the Buddha. In the afternoon, we explore the city of Kandy, a UNESCO World Heritage Sacred City rich in culture, history and religious heritage. Stroll around the scenic lakeside, framed by misty hills, and experience the lively atmosphere of Kandy market with its fresh fruit and vegetable stalls. In the evening, join a cultural show featuring traditional Sri Lankan music and drumming, offering an authentic insight into the island’s vibrant heritage. Overnight in Kandy.
Day 5 - Kandy - Colombo
After breakfast, we transfer from Kandy back to Colombo, known as the ‘City of Everything’. This vibrant capital blends a rich colonial past with modern urban life, reflecting its history under Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. We visit Gangaramaya Temple, one of Colombo’s oldest Buddhist temples, before heading to the lively streets of Slave Island and Pettah. Here, you’ll experience authentic Colombo life and sample local street food, including the fiery flavours of traditional Kottu Roti. You can also enjoy a taste of Sri Lankan arrack in a local bar. To end the day, we take a tuk-tuk ride back to the hotel, offering a fun and authentic way to see the city. Overnight in Colombo.
Day 6 - Colombo
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Bandaranaike International Airport for your onward or return flight. As your journey through some of Sri Lanka’s most captivating destinations comes to an end, take a moment to reflect on the vivid memories and images you have gathered from this remarkable island.
