Orkney & The Wild North

We leave Inverness and head north, pausing to admire Dunrobin Castle and its commanding views over the Moray Firth. Our journey continues along the legendary North Coast 500 to John o' Groats, where we take a stroll around this famous landmark before we set sail for the Orkney Islands across the Pentland Firth – with luck we may spot grey seals or even orcas.

In the afternoon, you have free time to explore Kirkwall – wander its charming streets and soak up the local culture. We arrive at our accommodation in the late afternoon, giving you time to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures.

Today we delve into the rich history and striking landscapes of the Orkney Islands. We begin at the Standing Stones of Stenness, dating back around 5,000 years, then continue to the ancient Ring of Brodgar, a magnificent stone circle that bears witness to Orkney’s prehistoric past.

Next is the world renowned Skara Brae, an impeccably preserved Stone Age village offering a vivid glimpse of life over 5,000 years ago. We take in the dramatic Yesnaby Cliffs and their rugged sea stacks – and if we are lucky, we may see puffins nesting along the cliffs. If tidal conditions allow, we visit the Brough of Birsay, a tidal island rich in archaeological treasures with panoramic sea views.

Before we bid farewell to Orkney, we visit a local farm for a firsthand encounter with Mangalitsa pigs, famed for their distinctive woolly coats and affectionately known as hairy pigs. We then explore the poignant Italian Chapel, a symbol of hope built by Italian prisoners of war during the Second World War.

After a morning of discovery, we board the ferry back to the mainland and take in Duncansby Head with sweeping views over the North Sea. We continue to the picturesque village of Lybster on the rugged Caithness coast, then make a final stop in the historic town of Dornoch, known for its beautiful cathedral and charming streets, before we return to Inverness in the early evening.
