El Calafate Glacier Experience
New
Begin in El Calafate for a 4 day Patagonian escape, finishing back in El Calafate. You will explore Los Glaciares National Park – think vast ice fields, drifting bergs on Lago Argentino and the thunder of the Perito Moreno Glacier – and visit El Chaltén, the laid back hiking hub with trails to panoramic Fitz Roy viewpoints. Expect to see condors overhead, bright blue lakes and rugged steppe, with time for a boat cruise, gentle walks or a more challenging trek depending on your pace. Evenings are easy going with cosy eateries and local flavours before you finish back in El Calafate.

Day 2 - El Calafate - El Chalten
After breakfast, you have a free day in El Calafate – wander the town, browse local shops and cafés, or simply relax and enjoy the Patagonian scenery. Optional excursions are available on request and are not included.
El Calafate Balcón Experience – minimum two participants, hotel pick up at 11:00, duration about four hours. You ascend the hills behind town to a natural viewpoint with sweeping views over El Calafate and Lake Argentino, with vistas towards the glacier accumulation zone and – on clear days – the Fitz Roy and Torre mountains in El Chaltén. En route you can see the Laberinto de Piedras – Cretaceous rock formations around 85 million years old – and the Piedra de los Sombreros, rare iron concretions found in only four places worldwide.
El Chaltén with Viewpoints and Lunch – minimum two participants, hotel pick up at 08:00, duration about 12 hours, available Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. You travel along Ruta 40 beside Lake Argentino and the Santa Cruz River, pausing at the historic La Leona Inn for a hot drink and homemade cakes before continuing to El Chaltén for lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon you take a moderate 45 minute walk to the Mirador de los Cóndores for panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, the Río de las Vueltas valley and the town, then continue to the Mirador de las Águilas to look over Lake Viedma, Bahía Túnel and Cerro Pirámide. We stay overnight in El Calafate.
Day 3 - El Calafate
After breakfast, we depart from your hotel for a full day at the Perito Moreno Glacier – still advancing. The scenic 80 km drive traces the southern shore of Lake Argentino, passing rivers, lakes and the rolling Andean foothills. As we enter Los Glaciares National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – look out for floating icebergs.
On arrival, we explore the network of panoramic walkways for varied viewpoints of the glacier’s towering ice walls. With luck, you may hear and see ice calving into the lake – an unforgettable sound and sight. Lunch is available at the on site restaurants or snack bar – not included.
If you’d like to get even closer, you can book the optional Nautical Safari – a one hour cruise on Lago Rico departing from Bajo de las Sombras port, about 7 km from the glacier. The boat approaches to around 400 metres from the southern wall and pauses for photos.
We return to El Calafate in the afternoon – overnight in El Calafate.
Day 4 - El Calafate
After breakfast, check out of your hotel. At the scheduled time, we provide a private transfer from your hotel to Comandante Armando Tola International Airport for your departure flight – a smooth conclusion to your Patagonian journey.
