Day 2 - Lagoa do Fogo and Sete Cidades
Ponta Delgada – Sete Cidades – Ribeira Grande – Ponta Delgada. Today, we will explore two of São Miguel’s most breathtaking natural wonders, Lagoa do Fogo and Sete Cidades. The tour begins with a visit to a traditional pineapple plantation, where the fruit is grown organically in greenhouses. Here, we can taste the island’s famous pineapple liqueur before continuing along the west coast to enjoy the view from the Pico de Carvão viewpoint. Surrounded by lush greenery, we will reach Vista do Rei, overlooking the Sete Cidades volcanic crater and its twin lakes, each reflecting a distinct blue and green hue.
Once inside the crater, we stop at the beautiful Lagoa de Santiago before heading to the village of Sete Cidades for lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon, the journey continues along the coast to Capelas, a former whaling village, where we pause at the Pedras Negras viewpoint for striking views of the north coast.
We then visit the town of Ribeira Grande and its historic centre, with the option to stop at a regional liqueur factory for a tasting. We continue to Caldeira Velha, a protected nature reserve, where you may optionally take a warm bath beneath a natural waterfall. The final stop of the day is the stunning Lagoa do Fogo, where we will have time to admire the sweeping views before returning to Ponta Delgada via Pico da Barrosa, enjoying another perspective over the island’s narrowest stretch.

We will also discover how the traditional Cozido das Furnas is cooked underground, utilising the earth’s heat. Before lunch, you have the option to visit Terra Nostra Garden and enjoy a swim in its warm thermal pool.
In the village of Furnas, we can see more geothermal springs, where hot and cool waters flow side by side. The route then leads to Pico de Ferro viewpoint for sweeping views across the Furnas Valley.
